The Todd Haimes Theatre was designed by George Keister and built by the Selwyn brothers, Edgar and Archie, in 1918. Originally named the Selwyn Theatre, the theatre is a historic Italian Renaissance-style Broadway venue. When built, its most unique feature was separate smoking rooms for men and women. Also, there was a shower and a telephone in each dressing room.
It was originally used for musicals and other theatrical performances, including Cole Porter’s Wake Up and Dream and Three’s a Crowd with Clifton Webb, but it was eventually used as a movie theatre. In the early 1990s, it was a visitor’s center and it featured a limited-run production of Eugene O’ Neill’s The Hairy Ape. Then it stood unused for years until t
he space was renovated in 1997 by The Roundabout Theatre Company. It was renamed The American Airlines Theatre in honor of its major sponsor, and reopened on June 30, 2000. The theatre originally had 1,180 seats, and now has only 740 seats. It currently serves as the home of the Roundabout. It was renamed The Todd Haimes Theatre on February 1st, 2024.
