  • SYNOPSIS

In The Glass Menagerie, playwright Tennessee Williams offers us a lovingly and honestly crafted portrait of Tom Wingfield and his family. Amanda wants her son Tom to bring home a gentleman caller for his reclusive sister Laura. Tom needs to leave his domineering mother and be independent. Like a child, Laura desires fantasy, shutting out the real world by playing old phonograph records and taking care of her collection of glass animals. The needs, desires and hopes of these three characters all converge one night when Tom brings home his acquaintance Jim, the Gentleman Caller, giving Amanda hope that her daughter’s future may finally be secure. Although Jim is not the man of Laura or her mother’s dreams, he is able to offer Tom’s sister a fleeting memory of a romantic evening. The Glass Menagerie is a tender, delicate play about lonely souls in need of a tiny amount of optimism.
