“Matilda” is also coming soon. The multi-Olivier Award-winning musical will preview March 4 and is scheduled to open April 11. The musical is based on the popular children’s book by Roald Dahl. The story focuses on a young girl named Matilda who has great intellectual gifts but is psychologically abused by her family and teachers. Eventually, with the help of one of her teachers, Matilda triumphs. Tony- and Olivier-winning director Matthew Warchus directs and other creatives include award-winning designers and master illusionist Paul Kieve.
Also scheduled to make its Broadway debut is “Motown,” the musical based on the life of Motown founder and star-maker Berry Gordy. “Motown” is scheduled to preview March 11 and open April 14. The show will include many Motown hits and additional songs and a book by Gordy. Musical Revivals on Broadway
Group sales for revivals are also big. Three major musical hits are on their way back to Broadway and for each this is their first time being remounted. “Pippin” previews March 23 and opens on April 25. The acclaimed ART production utilizes a circus theme in its re-envisioning of this social commentary musical that was originally directed by Bob Fosse. “Pump Boys and Dinettes,” which was a big hit in the early-80s, will star Bo Bice of American Idol fame. It will open April 8 after previewing March 19. Finally, “Jekyll & Hyde” will preview April 5 for a limited run. It’s scheduled to close August 24, 2013. This is a very sexy and passionate interpretation of “Jekyll & Hyde.” The original 1997 production of the show ran for over 1,500 performances on Broadway.
Stars Lighting the Great White Way
Big news in the star category as actor Tom Hanks makes his Broadway debut in the new play “Lucky Guy” by the late Nora Ephron. Hanks, who plays controversial Pulitzer Prize winning writer Mike McAlary, will preview in the show March 1 and open on April 1.
Also, actor Alec Baldwin returns to Broadway in “Orphans” as film star Shia LaBeouf makes his Broadway debut. March 19 is the date of this show’s preview. It will open on April 7. “Orphans ” is the story of two older orphaned brothers, one of whom is played by LaBeouf, who kidnap a Chicago gangster (Baldwin) and are then mentored by the man.
Finally, the revival of Horton Foote’s “The Trip to Bountiful” is brimming with stars as Cicely Tyson makes her first Broadway appearance in 30 years. Joining her will be Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Vanessa Williams. “The Trip to Bountiful” is a beautifully written play that’s filled with compassion and the poetry of living.
