All Tickets Broadway group sales agents have discounts for Bette Midler, Alan Cumming, Cicely Tyson and Fiona Shaw, new musicals and more. School group comps are on-hand for all shows until the end of February. Here are some of the latest shows and news.
Stars on Broadway
“Wow,” is what All Tickets says about the stars who will be on Broadway in early 2013. After 30 years two of America’s most talented women will be back on Broadway and our group sales agents have discounts for both shows.
Early this year, it was announced that Cicely Tyson will play the lead in Horton Foote’s “A Trip to Bountiful.” The cast includes Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Vanessa Williams. Tyson, who is one of the finest actresses around, should be adroit at handling Foote’s delicately crafted script.
Bette Midler is also back after about 30 years in the one-woman show “I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers.” Mengers was a ‘70s super agent and renowned hostess. He clients included some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Midler’s chutzpah, resonant personality and adroit comic timing will serve this show well.
Oscar winner Tom Hanks will make his Broadway debut this season in Nora Ephron’s play “Lucky Guy.” “Lucy Guy” is about controversial journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Mike McAlary. This show, which is directed Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe, is already extremely popular with groups. It previews in early March.
Two actors from the U.K. will also be on Broadway as Fiona Shaw play Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the play “The Testament of Mary” and Alan Cumming appears in his one-man version of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” playing all of the roles. These are two performers who are destined to give tour de force performances.
Musicals
For school groups, All Tickets has group discounts and comps for each and every Broadway show, including any and all musicals. New musicals for March and April include “Cinderella,” “Motown,” and “Matilda.”
“Cinderella,” starring Laura Osnes, includes a revamped book by Douglas Carter Beane and the same great score and lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein. This is the first major Broadway production of the show, which has been produced three times on TV with Julie Andrews, Lesley Ann Warren and Brandy playing the title role. “Motown,” the musical about record label founder Berry Gordie, is also coming to Broadway. This includes a book and new songs by Gordie plus an array of Motown hits. Gordie was the man behind Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and many more major recording artists.
There’s also “Matilda The Musical.” Winner of a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards including Best Musical, “Matilda The Musical” is more than a show, it’s a phenomenon. Based on the beloved novel by best-selling author Roald Dahl, “Matilda” is the story of an extraordinary girl who dreams of a better life. Armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, Matilda dares to take a stand and change her destiny.
This celebrated smash hit is presented by The Royal Shakespeare Company, one of the most acclaimed theater companies in the world, and the Dodgers, Tony Award®-winning producers of hits like Jersey Boys. Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus (“God of Carnage,” “The Norman Conquests”) helms this exhilarating and ingenious new musical The Guardian calls, “unadulterated bliss!”
