This new translation of Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov by Carol Rocamora stars Ethan Hawke and Joely Richardson in a production directed by Austin Pendleton. Chekhov’s play focuses on a declining bureaucrat and his attempt to renew his life. But life and its intricacies, nuances and unpredictable occurrences seem to be against Ivanov. Will he be able to cope?
Ivanov is a bureaucratic official who is being crushed by debt, responsibilities and regrets. He wants to find his energy for living once again but is beleaguered by an ill wife, unsettling relationships and ongoing pressures. Can he survive and flourish? This Chekhov drama first resonates with hope but suddenly ends in despair and futility.  Ivanov is a study of what it is to be human, fragile and imperfect.
