When Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig premiered Off-Broadway in 2004 it was acclaimed, winning the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play. It will once again be featured on the New York stage; this time finding a home at the Belasco Theatre.
Synopsis
In the weighty play Fat Pig, a thin man named Tom falls in love an overweight woman named Helen. Although Tom’s love is blind when it comes to his girlfriend’s heavy frame, he runs into trouble when his friends react negatively to her physical stature.
But Tom is resolute in his love despite the fact that coworkers Carter and Jeannie offer offensive barbs and cruel jokes. Tom’s situation is complicated by his relationship with Jeanine, a former girlfriend. It’s true that Tom’s love, Helen, is a tad larger than life but she is also exceedingly bright, quite lovely and very loving.
But in Fat Pig as time goes on and his friend’s perceptions start to invade his reality, making him question his values, the road of love becomes a true test for the young man. What kind of person is he and what are his real values? Fat Pig is a probingly truthful and stirringly insightful play.
