I recently finished a musical review that highlighted the 1950s and 60s and gained a new appreciation for the jukebox musical. While the energy often is pushed to continue moving along to the next song making the dialogue all about fluff and laughs, there is great enjoyment found in odes to decade musicals. Disaster! is no exception to the rule, in fact, it makes its own! This jukebox show parodies the musical and film disasters of the 1970s with hilarious props and crazy characters.

Now Starring…. Roger and Elphaba?

Kerry Butler, a former Elphaba who has spent a lot of her recent time starring in Rock of Ages is partnered with Adam Pascal, our favorite rock musical heartthrob of Rent and Aida. Brought together by Disaster! co-writer and actor Seth Rudetsky, these two along with the rest of the award winning cast brave their way through literal natural disasters while singing the Top 40 hits of the 1970s!

History and Review Status

This show originally premiered Off-Broadway at the St. Luke’s Theatre from November 3, 2013 – April 11, 2014. The current production on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre started March 8th and will be leaving on July 3rd. It runs a little over 2 hours with intermission.

According to the original review by the New York Times from when the production was Off-Broadway, a lot of the jokes seem dependent on a well versed 1970s audience. The reviewer, who was familiar with Rudestky’s allusions, mentions the movies being satirized. But he also goes on to say that the show really “earns the exclamation point.” He admits to rolling his eyes at the 70s films he both hated and loved as they are mentioned in the plot.
