Tony-winning actress Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes) returns to Broadway in the new musical Violet. Based on the Dorris Betts novel The Ugliest Pilgrim, Violet tells the poignant story of a facially disfigured woman who believes that the power of faith can transform her features, making her beautiful.

  • SYNOPSIS

    With book and lyrics by Brian Crawley and music composed by Jeanine Tesori, Violet offers us a touching, funny, and inspirational story of a woman who was disfigured by a childhood accident and her quest for beauty. Set in the 1960s and evoking that era’s obsession with defining and refining beauty in women, Violet gives audiences a journey that is revealing and uplifting. Convinced that a televangelist in Oklahoma can heal her, Violet hops a Greyhound to find him and to begin what will be a pilgrimage to discover the beauty in herself. During her trek, she forms unlikely friendships with those riding on the bus. These people teach her about true beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider.

  • This rendition of Violet is based on the 2013 New York City Center Encores! Off-Center production, which was directed by Leigh Silverman and starred Sutton Foster. Like Foster, Silverman, whose last Broadway effort was David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish, reprises her directorial capacity with Violet.
