Group ticket sales for the Broadway musical based on Sly Stallone’s Rocky are much anticipated. Rocky The Musical, which recently premiered in Hamburg, Germany, comes to Broadway in early 2014. The endearing story of the Philadelphia boxer who gets one shot at the big fight was a huge hit film in the early 1970s and made Sylvester Stallone a star. Stallone was the creative energy behind the musical which includes songs associated with the Rocky movies, Gonna Fly Now and Eye of the Tiger, and new music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and a book by Thomas Meehan. All three are Tony winners.
The Rocky Story
Sylvester Stallone created a story with huge appeal when he wrote the screenplay for Rocky. The Rocky story is that of a good guy fighter who never made it and looks to be a simple hustler with no future. But then Rocky gets the ultimate chance, the opportunity to fight the heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. It’s a big PR stunt but Rocky agrees to fight the champ and as he’s pushed by his old-time, belligerent manager, he is highly conflicted. Here he is with the chance of a lifetime and yet no one gives him a chance to last the fight.
He becomes a joke to many and yet, despite his fears of failure and being a nothing, he pushes forward in an attempt to proven himself. In the end he does just that but more importantly he finds the girl of his dreams, Adrian, a quirky, nerdy girl who works in a pet shop. The Rocky story is the ultimate crowd pleaser. You see, Rocky gets the girl, proves himself in the ring and yet, he manages a draw, which means Apollo Creed retains the title. Rocky is not about winning. It is about going the distance and being true to your dream. It is the ultimate American tale.
Director & Fight Choreographer
Alex Timbers directs. The two-time Tony nominated director whose latest efforts include the highly innovative Peter and the Starcatcher, which continues its run Off-Broadway after starting there and transferring to Broadway for a while, and the controversial musical Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson, for which he also wrote the book, is uniquely creative. The Hamburg production got strong reviews. Timbers knows how to orchestrate a show, making each element play in an appropriate manner. He utilizes stage and dramatic elements for ultimate impact.
Fight choreographer Steven Hoggett won plaudits for the finale of Rocky The Musical. Hoggett, a choreographer who has won an Olivier and was nominated for a Tony for the Broadway show Once, has devised stunning fight choreography for the big boxing match. It involves a revolving stage and a boxing match that’s equal to none.
