It was NOT Andrea McArdle. Although McArdle played the role when the show opened on Broadway, she was cast in another role before it premiered. McArdle replaced the first Annie who was Kristen Vigard. Vigard was replaced during rehearsals  by the producers because she did not have the streetsmart quality that McArdle possessed.
