Today, 1.3 million people visit the historicApollo Theatre annually. Designed by preeminent Broadway theatre architect George Keister, it from 1914- 1933 it was a “Whites Only” burlesque venue known as Hurtig and Seamon’s New Theatre. In 1934, it opened as the Apollo Theatre and it had a new focus, as it became a showplace for the black community.
It hosted vaudeville shows, big bands, jazz, rock and roll, and blues performers and much more. Some of the biggest acts played the venue. In 1983 the entire building was designated as a New York City Landmark and the Apollo Theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Community Works has developed a network of organizations dedicated to discovering and celebrating upper Manhattan’s history, culture and connections to local and global communities. Known as Community Matters NYC (CMNYC), it uses an array of programming methods, including performing arts events, workshops and multifaceted public programs and exhibits for intergenerational audiences, to enhance the artistic and educational landscape of constituencies.
