The Color Purple

The revival of the musical The Color Purple stars Grammy and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avery and, making her Broadway debut, Cynthia Erivo, who starred in the London production of the show, as Celie. The Color Purple is an uplifting musical that chronicles how one woman struggled through a childhood of poverty, abuse, and prejudice, to rise above everything and triumph.

  • SYNOPSIS

    The revival of The Color Purple, which features a book by Marsha Norman, lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, and music by Russell and Willis, is directed by John Doyle, who successfully staged the musical in a shortened version in London in 2013. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker, the musical tells the story of young woman named Celie. Celie learns to navigate the difficult and painful waters of her existence and through love discovers her voice in the world.
