Patent, or licensed, theatres were those that were allowed to perform serious or spoken drama during the Restoration in England.  Prior to the Restoration, during the Reformation, theatre was banned in England. When Charles II gained the throne, he carefully reintroduced professional drama to England by granting only a few licenses to select theatres.
