Founded in 1977, the mission of the New Museum is to serve as a destination for new art and new ideas from around the world. The focus is on emerging international artists, and, as such, the museum has shown early works of a number of prominent contemporary artists, among them Jeff Koons, Keith Haring, David Hammons, and Bill Jensen. In 2007, the New Museum announced an exciting international partnership with museums in Korea, Mexico, Egypt and The Netherlands. A dedicated space in New Museum’s facility showcases what is happening in contemporary art around the world.
Also in 2007, the New Museum opened its first freestanding, dedicated building that provided more open and light-filled exhibition space. Free docent-led tours acquaint visitors with the artwork on display and the architecture of the building. Group tours, either led by museum staff or self-guided, must be scheduled a minimum of three weeks in advance.
