Broadway group sales for Tony nominated plays are about to become a thing of the past. Once the Tonys are awarded, we’ll be talking about Broadway group sales and discounts for Tony winners. Let’s take a look at the numbers as far as nominations go. There are 19 shows with multiple nominations and 7 with one nod. Of the 19 shows with multiple nominations, three are in the double digits and three have been nominated twice.
Ten or More Tony Nominations
The three shows that garnered ten or more Tony nominations are big when it comes to Broadway group sales and, at All Tickets Inc., group discounts. Two, Kinky Boots and Matilda, The Musical, are new shows and one, Pippin, is a revival. Kinky Boots leads all nominees with 13 while Matilda is right behind with an even dozen. Pippin tops all revivals with 10. But don’t count out other revivals like Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which has nine nominations and is going strong. Motown, The Musical goes to the Tonys with four nods.
Nominated Plays
The play that got the most nominations is the revival of Golden Boy. Golden Boy, which has closed, earned eight nods. Two shows that are still running that have been honored with a half dozen nominations each are Lucky Guy and Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike. Both are new shows. Lucky Guy stars Tom Hanks. Hanks managed to snare a nomination in his Broadway debut. The Nance, with Nathan Lane, got five nominations, the revival of The Trip to Bountiful with Cecily Tyson has been honored with four and The Assembled Parties with Tony winner Judith Light has been given three, Holland Taylor, who is still running on Broadway in the one-woman show she penned about Ann Richards, has been nominated for her performance. That is the only Tony nomination for that show.
How Many Have Closed?
As already mentioned, despite the fact that Golden Boy notched more nominations than any other play on Broadway, it has closed. Also closed with five each are two other revivals, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. The Testament of Mary with Fiona Shaw earned three. Other closed Broadway shows being honored are A Christmas Story, The Musical (3), Hands on a Hardbody (3) and Bring It On: The Musical (2) and the plays The Heiress (2) and Orphans (2).
