When We Were Young and Unafraid takes place prior to the Violence Against Women Act and Roe V. Wade, in the 1970s, when a woman named Agnes ran an underground women’s shelter. Originally a bed and breakfast, Agnes has made her place of business a safe haven for abused women. But now Agnes must deal with a new woman she is sheltering, a runaway named Mary Anne, who is having a major influence on her teenage daughter, Penny. As Mary Anne feeds Penny ideas that her mother does not agree with and the sounds of the feminist voices of revolution grow louder, Agnes must now question her presumptions about those she’s devoted to helping.SYNOPSIS
