In a modern remaking and re-imaginging of Aeschylus’ The Danaids,one of the oldest extant plays, fifty brides flee their equally numbered grooms and petition for refuge in an Italian villa. Mayhem and some well-placed madness fuses this theatrical offering, which includes grooms in flight suits, women throwing themselves to the ground, occasional pop songs and romantic dances – even a bride falling in love!
Charles Mee, Signature’s 2007-08 Playwright-in-Residence, is reunited with his longtime collaborator, director Tina Landau. Big Love is a big play, a magnificent, poetic offering that investigates and exposes our desire for independence, the burdens of tradition, and the unusual and unpredictable nature of love.
