Times Square attracts 1,000,000 partygoers on New Year’s Eve. Here are some quick facts about Times Square, which is known by many names, including ‘The Crossroads of the World’ and ‘The Great White Way’, and ‘The Tenderloin’ due to the fact that in the 1920s it was the most desirable location in Manhattan.
Originally named Longacre Square, it was renamed in April 1904 when the New York Times moved its headquarters to the Times Building, which is presently called One Times Square.
1904 saw the first New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square. The party was held by the New York Times.
In 1907 the first ball drop occurred. The initial New Year’s Eve Ball was made by an immigrant metalworker named Jacob Starr. The ball was made of iron and wood and decorated with one hundred 25-watt light bulbs. It was 5 feet in diameter and weighed 700 pounds.
The 1929 stock market crash saw the area decline. Businesses closed down and moved out and seedier forms of entertainment moved into the area.
1942 and 1943 are the only years that a ball has not been lowered. Times Square was under a dim-out due to the war.
From the 1960s through to the 1980s, Times Square was noted for drug sales, porn theatres, and prostitution.
In 1974, Dick Clark began hosting the special Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. He was host from 1974- 2004 and then from 2006-2012.
In the 1990s, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani led the successful movement, which became known as Disneyfication, to clean up Times Square.
The statue of George M. Cohan is not in Times Square, although many believe it is. It is actually located in Father Duffy Square.
Times Square is famous for its signage, which includes electric, neon and illuminated signs for various products and companies, including Coca-Cola, Toshiba and the curved NASDAQ sign.

Broadway, Entertainment, Christmas & the Holidays
The Holiday Season is an exceptionally busy one. It’s a time when Broadway and NYC theatre offer special holiday-themed entertainments, and it’s also a time when theatre ticket sales spike. But it was not always that way.
Here’s a quick look back at what Christmas and associated entertainments were like in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
English theatre in the 19th century saw Dickens’ works, such as A Christmas Carol, adapted to the stage.
Also in England, Pantomimes, shows focusing on spectacle and based on fairy tales, were often a holiday treat.
1823: The poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, which is also known as “The Night Before Christmas” and “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas” is first published anonymously in 1823. In 1837, Clement Clarke Moore acknowledges that he wrote it.
1832: Charles Follen, Harvard’s first German professor, helps popularize the tradition of the decorated Christmas tree to New England. Harriet Martineau, an English journalist visiting Boston sees it and writes about it, spreading the word.
1843: Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is first published. American author Washington Irving and Dickens were friends, and at some point Irving writes his essay entitled “Old Christmas,” harkening to English holiday traditions.
1850: By the 1850s, Santa Claus and Christmas trees are firmly “rooted” in the U.S. So too was American parlor culture. The parlor was where people gathered for holiday celebrations. Parlors included a piano or guitar, and some actually housed small theatres where plays were performed.
1863: German-born cartoonist Thomas Nast has his first of many illustrations of Santa Claus published in Harper’s Weekly.
1870: On June 24th, President Ulysses S. Grant signs the bill, making Christmas an official holiday in the U.S. Also included as holidays in the bill were Thanksgiving, January 1st, and July 4th.
1897: “Is There a Santa Claus?” was the title of an editorial appearing in the September 21, 1897, edition of The (New York) Sun. The editorial, which included the famous reply “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus”, is one of the best known, reprinted, and referenced editorials to ever appear in newsprint.
1899: Ben Hur- A Tale of Christ, which was written by Lew Wallace in 1880, is turned into a play. It runs in New York for 194 performances, opening on November 29, 1899. This play, which was renowned for its spectacle, violence, and reverence to Christ, would be done across America for 21 years.
1903: Victor Herbert’s operetta Babes in Toyland opens in NYC on October 13th and enjoys a 192-show run that goes through the holidays and ends in March 1904. Although not a Christmas show, the toy theme, buoyant music, and fantasy captured some of the holiday spirit.
1920sopular Christmas songs of the time included At the Christmas Ball (Bessie Smith), The Santa Claus Blues (Clarence Williams), and Lonesome Christmas Blues (Blind Blake).
1924: The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is held, and, yes, Santa closes out the original event, as he still does today.
1933: On December 21st, the first Radio City Christmas Spectacular was performed. It ran for two weeks. Radio City had opened just one-year prior. The show did and always has featured Santa.
All of what is cited above is a far cry from what is now offered. For a more in-depth look at why and how holiday entertainments developed in the U.S. please click here.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock—The Musical is based on the popular 2003 movie of the same name that starred Jack Black. With additional music and lyrics by Webber and Glenn Slater and book by Julian Fellowes, School of Rock is the latest Broadway bound musical by Webber. In School of Rock—The Musical, Dewey Finn desperately wants to be a rock star. He disguises himself as a substitute teacher and lands a gig as an instructor at a prestigious prep school.
The musical comedy veers into the world of hot guitar riffs, pounding drum rhythms, and pulsating tempos when Dewey realizes that his students have some real musical talent. The faux teacher forms a rock band with his musically inclined fourth-grade students in order to win the Battle of the Bands and pay off his rent. But in this musical comedy, there’s a lot to be learned, including important lessons taught to Dewey by his students and band members.

The Times Square area of Manhattan is where all of the various energies that make up the great city of New York come together to create an amazing mélange of humanity. No other place in the word sees more visitors than Times Square, as 360,000 pedestrians a day walk through, amounting to over 131 million a year.
In Times Square, you’ll see bold and big commercial ads, billions of lights that pierce through the darkness making night into light. and more ultra-tech media than you’ve ever imagined. It is the place where you can see the entire world within a few blocks. Times Square is located at the juncture of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and then goes to West 47th and West 42nd.
Quick Historical Facts
The area was first known as Longacre Square
Before the American Revolution, the site included a horse breeding enterprise and farmland.
In the 19th century, John Jacob Astor bought the area and sold it in small parcels to hotels, businessmen, and others.
In 1904, it was renamed for the newly built Times Building, which housed The New York Times.
Around the same time, what was NYC’s first electrified advertisement was erected in Times Square.
Also at that time, a decision was made to have the subway run to and through the area.
It was a hub for theatre, the arts, entertainment, and commerce until the 1930s and the Great Depression
By the 1960s its reputation had diminished, as it became known as an area for dope peddling, prostitution, pornography, and grifting.
From 1994- 2002, Mayor Rudy Giuliani led an effort to clean up the area, which was successful.
Today, Times Square, with its theatres, shops, restaurants, and various attractions is a great place for the entire family.

Off-Broadway
Quality Theatre for Less
Off-Broadway is less a place and more a state of being, as Off-Broadway theatres are designated by the fact that they are in NYC, have 100-499 seats, and contract actors according to the rules and regulations of Actors’ Equity Association.
The biggest difference between Broadway and Off-Broadway shows has to do with the cost of producing them. It’s less expensive to mount a production Off-Broadway, which makes it easier to produce a show in this arena than on Broadway.
Great Theatre, Lower Ticket Prices
Off-Broadway shows tend to fall into three categories:
Productions that are first mounted here, which eventually transfer to Broadway
Productions that are mounted Off-Broadway and remain Off-Broadway
Productions that have been on Broadway, which transfer to Off-Broadway
Many actors, directors, designers, and other theatre professionals work on both Off-Broadway and Broadway shows. The quality of Off-Broadway is high and, yet, due to lower production costs, ticket prices are much lower than you’ll find for Broadway shows. Plus, you can save more by buying group discount tickets, and the minimum number of people required for an Off-Broadway group is less than Broadway, often starting at 8.
Off-Broadway Shows
What shows might you know that started Off-Broadway? To name a few, Avenue Q, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Next to Normal, A Chorus Line, Grease, Sunday in the Park with George, Rock of Ages, Rent, Godspell, and Spring Awakening. All of these musicals eventually had a successful Broadway run.
Off-Broadway is not only a place where you’ll see Broadway’s next great hit show or a production that’s enjoyed a successful run on The Great White Way and transferred to a smaller venue. It is also a place where you will see shows that are a bit riskier, innovative, and quirky. Off-Broadway is a place where some of the most interesting creative artists come to experiment, discover, and develop the art form of theatre.

On the Twentieth Century is a madcap train ride that is an express to hilarity. The story focuses on Oscar Jaffe (Peter Gallagher), a struggling, downtrodden, and desperate Broadway producer, who fights to convince Lily Garland (Kristin Chenoweth), a successful film actress who is also his former lover and muse, to come back to the Great White Way in a huge drama. However, the drama, which is about Mary Magdalene, does not actually exist. Jaffe must also deal with a range of miscues, surprises, and off-the-wall characters, including Lily Garland’s jealous new lover and a religious fanatic. This musical comedy is set aboard the luxury train that has been christened The Twentieth Century.

The Visitor
A New Musical
Open: 2015
Book and Lyrics: Brian Yorkey
Music: Tom Kitt
Tony Winners Kitt and Yorkey
The Visitor is about a widower, played in the 2007 film by Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins, who befriends a Syrian immigrant in post-9/11 New York City. Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, who are presently represented on Broadway byIf/Then and who received the Tony and Pulitzer Prize for their musical Next to Normal, are developing this new work.
According to the creators, “The Visitor is the poignant and urgent story of Walter, a lost soul who gets a new lease on life with the arrival of Terek, an undocumented immigrant who challenges Walter’s capacity for acceptance, change, and even intimacy… The Visitor suggests that the ties that bind us–music, passion, love–are far more powerful tools for healing than the things that tear us apart.”
Kitt and Yorkey are two of the most innovative musical theatre creators presently working on Broadway. This project has the potential to be a major Broadway hit.

Based on the true story of Violet and Daisy Hilton, conjoined twins who are able to find fame but not love, Side Show provides us with a glimpse of two individuals who were simultaneously one. Their tale fascinated the public, and like our electronic media of today, the newspapers, magazines, and radio outlets of the time used the story of Violet and Daisy to make large amounts of cash. Jez Butterworth’s play, The River, which stars Hugh Jackman, is about human interaction, passion and loss, and our attempts to recapture that “something” that defines our ability to have hope and chase dreams. (No Group Rates, prices $175-$275)
When J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan he was desperate for a new hit play. Broadway Theatre
More than the Show
The Broadway experience does not have to start and end with the show. There are many other ways that groups can access Broadway and learn about the theatre.
Here are a few.
Study Guides: A focused study guidecan help students and teachers as they prepare to see or after they have experienced a play or musical. Study guides may provide background information on the play and creators of the show, an important historical and social context, and details on the plot, themes, and characters.
Backstage Tours: When a group gets to go backstage, as they do withWicked: Behind the Emerald Curtain, they get a whole new perspective of theatrical art, craft, and technology, as well as a better understanding of how the collaborative process of theatre works.
The Talkback: Getting an opportunity to discuss what your group just saw on stage with those who created the event can be truly enlightening. Atalkback allows instant access and can lead to extremely interesting classroom discussions.
Educational Encounters: Through a collaborative effort with New York’s premiere Broadway educational organization, Stage Door Connections, All Tickets Inc. offers close to 50 professionally taught theatrical seminars and educational experiences. From basic to advanced encounters, Stage Door Connectionsprovides active and engaging learning experiences.
The next time your school, educator, or theatre arts group visits New York, consider including one or more theatrical learning experience in addition to the shows you are seeing. It is an educational investment well worthwhile.
