Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a combination of Chekov and Greek mythology via the outrageous comedic mind of playwright Christopher Durang. Life is filled with misery, regret and depression in an oddly defined world comprised of classical references, pop culture and hedonism. It’s a Durang comedy, what do you expect?
Synopsis
In Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the story focuses on Vanya and his stepsister Sonia as the two struggle to exist on the family farm. They have sacrificed to care for their aging parents while sister Masha has been living the highlife as a movie star. Vanya and Sonia toil away, barely existing, whole being buffeted by the multitudinous warnings of Cassandra, their cleaning woman who doubles as a soothsayer. Cassandra foretells terrible things to come, including a visit by the miscreant Masha with her 20-ish boy toy Spike. The farm will never be the same after the arrival of the libidinous couple as Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike takes us down roads rarely travelled.
