When Shuffle Along finally made its way to the Broadway stage, it had barely endured a disastrous pre-Broadway tour. This most unlikely hit musical arrived in NYC in May 1921 deeply in debt and booked to open at a remote Broadway house on West 63rd Street. But with an infectious jazz score that included the soon-to-be hit song “I’m Just Wild About Harry” and contagiously energetic choreography, Shuffle Along became a red-hot hit that ignited the imaginations of Broadway and all of New York City.
