This musical is a parody of large, flashy 1930s Busby Berkeley-style movie musicals in which an understudy steps into a role on Broadway and becomes a star. It started Off-Off-Broadway, then transferred to Off-Broadway, and helped bring Bernadette Peters to prominence.

When she’s asked if she can do it despite the fact that she’s never done the role, sung the music, or performed the dances, she replies sweetly and simply, “I’ll try.”
