The King and I

The King and I is a classic musical that investigates what happens when the West goes to the East and attempts to make changes at the request of their host. Starring Kelli O’Hara as Anna, The King and I is a story focusing on the clash of cultures, personalities, and the sexes. This is a major Broadway revival of the musical that captured five Tony Awards in 1952, including Best Musical, and the 1996 revival won three Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical.

  • SYNOPSIS

    The King and I takes place in the mid-19th century in Siam. It’s at this time that an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the The King and I takes place in the mid-19th century in Siam. It’s at this time that an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok. They have been summoned by the King of Siam to serve as tutor to his numerous children and wives. The West considers the King to be a barbarian, and he requests the assistance of Anna in transforming his image. However, this is not an easy task, as Anna and the King tangle in attempts to retain what they feel are important beliefs, traditions, and values. Through the process, they develop a true friendship and unique love. The King and I is a funny, compassionate, and insightful musical about our cultural differences and similarities.
