With Casa Valentina playwright Harvey Fierstein takes us back to the early ‘60s when certain men who were looking for a different type of adventure took a summer sojourn to a secluded bungalow in the Catskills where they could be themselves. They took leave of their families, associates, and friends and joined their counterparts at Casa Valentina to recreate themselves in what would be, overall, a socially unacceptable manner.

  • SYNOPSIS

It is 1962 and it’s a time of holdover conservatism from the 1950s. In Harvey Fierstein’s  Casa Valentina, metropolitan, heterosexual men with wives and families opt to travel two hours out of the city to engage in their ultimate cross-dressing fantasies. They go to the land of borscht belt comedians, dirty dancing, and kosher meals, the Catskill Mountains, where they spend their weekends in a secluded colony of private bungalows. Here they are happy, safe, and secure as they momentarily live the lives of their chosen female alter egos. However in Casa Valentina a crisis ensues when these men, white-collar professionals with families, are given the chance to become an official, public organization. Are they willing to push the boundaries of socially acceptable behavior in order to gain respect while placing their personal lives in jeopardy?
