Last Testament of Mary Fiona Shaw Broadway group salesThe Testament of Mary
by Colm Toibin takes as its focus Mary, the mother of Jesus. Set after the Crucifixion of Jesus in the city of Ephsesus, the play offers insights into the human side of Mary, one that is filled with doubt, independence and free thought.

Synopsis

After her son, Jesus, has been crucified, Mary, his mother, lives under guarded protection in Ephsesus. In The Testament of Mary, she must contend with two of Jesus’ followers who desire to write about her son’s life. But Mary won’t cooperate with these writers of the gospel under whose protection she lives. She does not believe Jesus was the Son of God. Mary has her own story to tell, and it’s one that has never before been heard.

Starring Fiona Shaw as Mary, The Testament of Mary boldly sets forth a new vision of the mother of Jesus. She is her own person who knows Jesus in ways no other person has or ever will. We see Mary as a mother who has suffered a great loss and who must contend with men who would weave a tale of him that she finds to be inaccurate at best. The Testament of Mary, which is an adaptation of the playwright’s short novel publish in 2012, is a truly unique vision of the mother of Jesus, raising questions regarding faith, history and power.

big-knife

Clifford Odets The Big Knife is as much an indictment of 1940s Hollywood and what it can do to one’s soul, as it is a play of suspense, mystery and intrigue. Actor Charlie Castle used to be an accomplished artist on the stage, but he’s turned into a schlock actor willing to do the studio’s bidding. He’s played the Hollywood game, cheated on his wife and made his family his second-choice in life. Marion, his wife, says she will forgive everything if he’ll turn his back on Tinsel Town. But can he?

Synopsis

Can Charlie Castle give up the Hollywood scene in The Big Knife? The studio doesn’t want to let Charlie go. He’s worth too much. His wife demands that he does. Will studio executive Marcus Hoff get his way and will his blackmailing force the actor to sign a 14-year studio deal? Charlie wants to do the right thing but finds himself caught in the middle of forces he can’t control. The outcome is dark and tragic.

The Big Knife offers a compelling story about the demise of man who once possessed amazing potential, brilliant talent and a moral center. But in Odets’ play all of those attributes, which had defined Charlie Castle, are gone and what is left may not be able to be saved or to survive.

Boy Willie comes home after serving time in a Mississippi prison. He has with him his friend Lymon and a truck loaded with watermelons. Lymon wants to buy the land that was worked by his ancestors when they were slaves. But he requires the cash to buy it and he’s sure he can get it by selling the family piano. However his sister Berniece is determined that the piano stay in the family, even though she doesn’t play it. As tension builds, the ghost of Sutter, the man who once owned Charles family when they were slaves, returns to haunt them.

talleys-folly

In the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Talley’s Folly by Lanford Wilson, Matt Friedman is still interested in being romantically involved with Sally Talley. In post-World War II America, Matt returns to his hometown and he and Sally meet in the family boathouse, which serves as the perfect setting for their sometimes contentious, often comical and always genuine meeting. Together they discover whether or not they are meant for one another.
Synopsis
Talley’s Folly focuses on the relationship between a Jewish immigrant named Matt Friedman and Sally Talley, a nurse. Set just after World War II, Talley’s Folly focuses on Matt’s attempt to court Sally and her ill-feelings about the future. Set in small-town middle-America, Talley’s Folly offers playgoers two amazingly complex and genuine characters. Matt, who has always kept people at a distance, has decided to try to convince Sally that they are meant for each other and that they can make a life together in what is an unpredictable world. Sally must wrestle with a deep secret that she feels will surely negate Matt’s love for her. The two-character play takes us on an unpredictable journey through  a labyrinth to the heart of love, caring and family.
Lanford Wilson is known for writing plays that are character driven, offering a style that is both realistic and poetic. Group Sales see Nathan Lane the Nance on Broadway

Tony-winner Nathan Lane appears on Broadway in The Nance by Douglas Carter Beane. Lane, who won a Tony for his portrayal of Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and a Tony and Olivier for the role of Max Bialystock in The Producers, will play Chauncey Miles, a gay man who is a top nance performer. What’s a “nance?” Read more to find out.

Synopsis

In The Nance, Nathan Lane plays an actor, Chauncey Miles, specializing in “nance” roles. A nance is a stock stage character of a campy homosexual man. Straight actors often played this type of character. What makes this nance different from others is that he is being played by a homosexual. According to the production company, The Nance is “the portrait of a homosexual man, living and working in the secretive and dangerous gay world of 1930s New York, whose outrageous antics on the burlesque stage stand in marked contrast to his messy offstage life.”

Written by Douglas Carter Beane (writer of the book for the musicals “Lysistrata Jones” and “Xanadu” and the play “The Little Dog Laughed”) and directed by three-time Tony-winner Jack O’Brien, who has directed the Broadway musicals The Full Monty and Hairspray, contemporary dramas such as The Piano Lesson, The Invention of Love and The Coast of Utopia, and a range of Shakespeare, The Nance offers keen insights through a dynamic stage performer.

The answer is “yes.” It is the 1991 Oscar-winning movie The Silence of the Lambs parodied to the limit, featuring the characters FBI agent-in-training Clarice Starling (played by Jodie Foster in the movie) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (played by Anthony Hopkins). Love, Loss, and What I Wore

THIS SHOW IS CLOSED
In this fragmented tale, five women find that their clothing and closets can transport them to other times that hold sometimes wonderful, sometimes dramatic, sometimes comedic and always important moments from their lives. The cast of Love, Loss and What I Wore is comprised of five stars who sit on stools, dressed in formal black. That simple costume statement says that we are about to witness something important, sophisticated and different.

We discover what she was wearing during specific important moments of her life and are enlightened by her life and the lives of the other characters. This show is like an intimated, totally engaging conversation with your best friend. The memories are various and include dismaying moments, dramatic occurrences, bittersweet remembrances and more.
With Nora Ephron, who has written numerous “chick flicks,” as one of the creators, Love, Loss and What I Wore is bound to be a perfect evening out for female friends, a mother and older daughter or that special date night with that very special guy. With a nostalgic look at personal milestones, fashion trends and friends and family, this is a show that will make you feel a range of emotions. Funny, touching and lovingly acted.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Chita Rivera is back on Broadway in the revival of Rupert Holmes’ The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel, which bears the same name, this highly theatrical musical utilizes the magnificent world of the English music hall and pantomime. It is filled with twists and complications, a murder (possibly) and some key audience participation.  A great mystery and great fun!

Synopsis

The musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which is also known as Drood, is a cunning mystery replete with comic moments, revelations and a happy ending voted on by the audience. What has happened to Drood. Is he dead? The answer is perhaps, yes, no (you have to see it to really know)!  The audience gets to vote on the resolution and also participates in a sing-along.
Drood is a highly imaginative adaptation of Charles Dickens final and unfinished novel. Dickens died from a sudden stroke, leaving the world a final literary work whose ending they could debate forever. Book writer, composer and lyricist Rupert Holmes is one of the few to write all three elements of a smash hit Broadway musical. The Mystery of Edwin Drood won five Tonys when it premiered in 1985, including Best Musical, Book and Score. This is its first Broadway revival and it looks to be an exciting event.

Spider

Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, with music by Bono and The Edge, is a big musical. This stunning and powerful show features one of Marvel Comics most enigmatic and popular superheros: Spider-Man. The gargantuan musical offers magnificent special effects, major production numbers and music that is at times haunting and other times driving and passionate. Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark is overwhemling, engrossing and deliberately theatrical, This is a “must see” show.

Synopsis

Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark is the thrilling, comical and dramatic story of Peter Parker, a geeky guy who becomes a superhero after being bitten by a genetically altered spider. When transformed into Spider-Man, Parker becomes one of the finest fighters of bad guys and villians you’ll ever see. His physical abilties are overwhemlingly inspiring as Spider-Man ably defends the innocent from the wicked.
And although there are human elements in Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark that make Parker endearing, there are impressive arachnid-like characteristics that turn him into a spellbinding hero who utilizes amazing special talents, such as the ability to cast his web and use his tendrils amongst skyscrapers, maximizing his superior strength in ways he’d never before imagined and refining his newly upgraded senses to dominate others. Innovation, technical virtuosity and a penchant to create the spectacular are all key in making this musical come alive on the Broadway stage.
But it’s not all big effects and production numbers in Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark. Spider-Man carries major mental baggage. As it is with those who find themselves transformed into superior beings, Spider-Man realizes that his new superpowers can destroy at will and that means that he has a responsibility to society. The unremarkable Peter Parker is now the very remarkable Spider-Man, and he must be mindful of that.

Set in the Hollywood of the 1980s, when the rock bands featured bad boys, stinging guitar riffs and hammering drums, Rock of Ages is a fast-paced, drug-laced, sex-maze of frivolity set to the hits of the time. It’s true that there is a story, but it’s fairly light, which helps to emphasize, as does the fact that drinks are served at your seat during the show, that this is about a time when designer drugs and groups of groupies were the hallmarks of a rock band’s success.

Rebecca

It was a haunting novel and then an enigmatic Hitchcock film, and now it comes to the stage as a musical. Rebecca is a show of haunting mystery, romance and a past that simply will not disappear into the fog. Can impassioned desire, a beautiful and enigmatic woman and a perfect love ever be forgotten?

Synopsis

“Last night, I dreamed of Manderley,” may be the most famous line from the hauntingly romantic mystery Rebecca. Although the new Mrs. De Winters desperately wants to feel at home and be accepted, she is constantly intimidated by Mrs. Danvers, the controlling and manipulative housekeeper of Maxim’s West Country estate of Manderley, and by memories of Rebecca.
It is the magnificent Manderley where the memory of de Winter’s first wife, the glamorous and mysterious Rebecca, is kept alive. Her beauty and enigmatic energy haunts everyone who tries to live in the present. The new musical Rebecca will be on Broadway in October 2012.

She finds it hard going at first, but her talent, kind but stern manner and ability to put song, dance and flighty magic into what for many is a dull life, wins over the children and eventually even the adults .

The Heiress

The Heiress, based on Henry James’ novel Washington Square and set in the 1850s, focuses on the plain, shy and potentially wealthy Catherine Sloper, as she is courted for her family fortune by Morris Townsend.  The Heiress, which first performed on Broadway in 1947, is about the abuse of trust, loss of innocence and manipulation of emotions. It is also very much about love and its illusions and realities.

Synopsis

A wonderful cast, including Jessica Chastain (Catherine Sloper), David Strathairn (Dr. Austin Sloper), Dan Stevens (Morris Townsend) and Judith Ivey (Aunt Penniman), has been assembled for the revival of The Heiress.  This will be its fourth revival on Broadway with the 1995 production, the most recent, running for 340 performances. The play focuses on Dr. Austin Sloper’s daughter, Catherine, a plain girl who is wooed by a handsome beau, Morris Townsend.

Catherine falls passionately in love with Morris, but her father claims the young man only seeks her money and forbids a proposed marriage. When Catherine suggests to Morris that they elope, he leaves her, realizing that he won’t see a penny. But Morris returns to see Catherine only to find that she understands the true nature of his intentions as she refuses to see him again..
