  • On Broadway

Shuffle Along, a musical with music and lyrics by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake and original book by F.E. Miller and Aubrey Lyles, was a groundbreaking Broadway show that changed the way that theatre audiences saw relationships in the black community. Historians agree that it was not only a big hit in 1921, but that it helped to lead the way towards a new Broadway.

  • SYNOPSIS

When Shuffle Along finally made its way to the Broadway stage, it had barely endured a disastrous pre-Broadway tour. This most unlikely hit musical arrived in NYC in May 1921 deeply in debt and booked to open at a remote Broadway house on West 63rd Street. But with an infectious jazz score that included the soon-to-be hit song “I’m Just Wild About Harry” and contagiously energetic choreography, Shuffle Along became a red-hot hit that ignited the imaginations of Broadway and all of New York City. Because of Shuffle Along, Uptown and Downtown were brought together and became one.
  • The 2016 Shuffle Along, which has been re-envisioned and created anew by a stellar constellation of theatre artists, brings the original show back to the stage, while also revealing the amazing backstage story of how this inventive, innovative, and transformational musical came to be, succeed, and changed those who came to know it.
