New Musicals About the US

There are many new musicals either now open or coming to Broadway that are about the US and our history. These include the Off-Broadway, hip-hop hit Hamilton, which is about our first Secretary of the Treasury; Allegiance, which focuses on the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, and Amazing Grace, a musical about the slave trade and one man’s social conscience.

Musical Revivals

There is also a list of exciting musical revivals. These include a new production of The Color Purple starring Grammy and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avery and, making her Broadway debut, Cynthia Erivo. Erivo starred in the London production of the show as Celie. The Color Purple looks to be an exciting Broadway event. Plus, there is Dames at Sea. This musical comedy was a huge Off-Broadway hit decades ago and is finally finding its way to the Broadway stage.

Also on hand is one of the greatest America musicals off all-time Fiddler on the Roof. This new production will star Broadway favorite Danny Burstein as Tevye. This is the 50th anniversary of the Broadway premiere of Fiddler.

Broadway will host the first revival of Spring Awakening this season, and a new production of the Bock, Harnick, and Masteroff musical comedy She Loves Me. She Loves Me stars Tony winner Laura Benanti and Disgraced star Josh Radnor.

More on the Horizon

There are many more new Broadway productions that will be opening in 2015-16. It’s best to get your tickets early, as you’re able to secure the best seats and the lowest prices. Group tickets are reasonably priced, and with All Tickets’ free ticket program, you’ll save even more.

Get the best prices through All Tickets, Inc.
We’ll help you find your way around Broadway and NYC.

The best time to buy Broadway group tickets is before a show opens. Once it opens and tickets are in demand two things often happen. First, group tickets become harder to get, especially if the show is a hit. Producers make a lot more money on single ticket sales, and they will limit groups to utilize that ticket base.

The other thing that happens is ticket prices usually go up after a show opens. This is especially true if that production wins a Tony or two. How much higher might they go? That depends on how many people want to see it. Prices can rise anywhere from 40% to 80%!

Getting the Best Group Price

The best way to ensure you’re getting the best group price is to purchase your tickets through a group sakes agent that is fully licensed and insured. Broadway will see the revival of two honored American plays, A View From the Bridge and The Gin Game. The revival of Arthurs Miller’s A View from the Bridge is a transfer of the award-winning production that was first produced on London’s West End. The Gin Game is an American production starring two-time Tony winner James Earl Jones and Tony winner Cecily Tyson. A View from the Bridge

The production of A View from the Bridge that is coming to The Great White Way has received numerous plaudits and awards, including three Olivier Awards. There’s a lot of excitement concerning this production which will play at the Lyceum Theatre in NYC.

Arthur Miller’s tragedy was first produced in 1955 on Broadway where it ran for 149 performances. Although not successful when it was first produced, revivals have received numerous awards, including the 1998 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Play, 1998 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, 2010 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Play, and 2015 Olivier Award for Best Revival, Best Actor (Mark Strong), and Best Director (Ivo van Hove).

The play tells the story of dockworker Eddie Carbone and his obsession with his wife’s 17-year-old niece, Catherine. This is an intense, moving, and violent drama that ends tragically for Carbone, as he is unable to escape from the passions that drive his actions. Mark Strong and Phoebe Fox reprise the roles of Eddie Carbone and Catherine respectively, which they both played on London’s West End.

The play tells the story of Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey who meet at a retirement home and begin playing gin. Fonsia knows nothing about the game so Weller begins to teach her. She is an amazing pupil, as she starts to beat her teacher at every hand played. As the play progresses, the two new friends begin exposing one another’s failures, disappointments, and weaknesses. It’s high energy!

It Shoulda Been You is a musical comedy that has a lot going for it. Directed by David Hyde Pierce, this musical about a Jewish and Catholic wedding that goes off the tracks and desperately tries to find a happy ending. (By the way, it does; it is a musical comedy after all.) It Shoulda Been You is a true audience pleaser. It is a true remedy for bad mood, the blues, crankiness, or any lack of luster or laughter in anyone’s life.

The acting is right on target.

This 100-minute comedy, which has about 200 to 250 laughs, offers theatregoers a new look at the subgenre of wedding farce, and carries its wacky and ridiculous plot twists, complications, and characters to the penultimate brink of ludicrousness. Everything is played to the hilt, making It Shoulda Been You a comedic romp of an evening, filled with high energy, smart and some not-so-smart gags, and genuine feelings of love and care.

A seasoned and adroit Broadway cast has been enlisted and includes Tony winners Tyne Daly (Mothers and Sons, Gypsy) and Harriet Harris (Thoroughly Modern Millie). Joining them are Broadway vets David Burtka (Gypsy), Sierra Boggess (The Phantom of the Opera), Lisa Howard (Priscilla Queen of the Desert), Edward Hibbert (Curtains), Montego Glover (Memphis), Josh Grisetti (Peter and the Starcatcher), Michael X. Martin (The Bridges of Madison County), Anne L. Nathan (Once), Nick Spangler (Book of Mormon), and Chip Zien (Into the Woods). This group handles the material with aplomb.

The show has a book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove, with music by Barbara Anselmi, who conceived the show, and additional lyrics by Jill Abramovitz, Carla Rose Fisher, Michael Cooper, Ernie Lijoi and Will Randall. The team has created a screwball musical comedy that defines screwball musical comedy.

Reviews Are In

Great fun on the bridal circuit.
Great fun on the bridal circuit.

USA Today’s Elysa Gardner enthusiastically observed, “…this new musical, this Broadway season’s freshest and funniest to date, defies skepticism, both in its wacky humor and its big, buoyant heart. Book writer and lyricist Brian Hargrove and composer Barbara Anselmi have taken a familiar premise — that of lovers from different backgrounds uniting — and crafted something that is both endearingly old-fashioned in spirit and decidedly contemporary in execution.

Hollywood Reporter reviewer Frank Scheck put It Shoulda Been You in historical and comedic context when he noted, “That old popular-comedy chestnut Abie’s Irish Rose is given a modern twist in the new musical It Shoulda Been You, which plays like vintage dinner theater infused with a Borscht Belt sensibility. That it nonetheless manages to be truly amusing is a testament to the talent both on and offstage: such comic pros as Tyne Daly, Harriet Harris and Edward Hibbert manage to make the hoariest of jokes uproarious, while director David Hyde Pierce has staged the proceedings with a brisk expertise that makes the 100 intermission-less minutes fly by. It’s the sort of show that practically redefines the term ‘guilty pleasure.’”

Nothing like a wedding to mess up being in love.
Nothing like a wedding to mess up being in love.

Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune offered some insightful comments when he wrote, “The aim here, for sure, was an updating of the standard wedding farce, and so achieved, given the various eleventh-hour arrivals of courage and a remarkably fluid set of sexual orientations that allow for a fresh mix-and-matching of couples. Still, there is something cheering about the arrival of gay marriage in traditional farce, that most conservative of theatrical genres, in a show designed mostly to play to those who would not have been on the vanguard of such change.

“It is in such moments that societal change is most palpable, but still, the main reason to admire ‘Shoulda’ is the frequency, quirkiness and heartiness of the laughs.”

rotten8765Something Rotten!, which has been nominated for 10 Tonys and is part of All Tickets’ Best Broadway Group Comp program, is a riotous musical comedy. How funny is it? It’s got everything from broad slapstick to tongue-in-cheek humor to anachronistic references to tomfoolery (that last is not a character, it’s about being silly). Set during the English Renaissance it’s about the ersatz birth of musical comedy during a time when Shakespeare ruled the stage and England the seas.

Here are a few clips from Something Rotten!

something10098Something Rotten!, which has been nominated for 10 Tonys, is anything but the name suggests, rotten. The name comes from a famous line in Hamlet, which is “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark,” It’s said by Marcellus to Horatio, and it is about how Claudius has allowed the country to become corrupt.

In the case of the musical comedy, Something Rotten!, that title refers to one of the final numbers during which the theatre company prepares for opening night of Omelette: The Musical. The show Something Rotten! is a madcap takeoff on the age of Shakespeare, musical theatre, and Shakespearean literature.

Reviews

The reviews for Something Rotten! when it opened in April were enthusiastic. Many of those who commented on the show love the music and lyrics, the show’s unbridled comedy, and it’s wonderful performances.

Comps tickets for something rotten
Something Rotten!

Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press wrote, “Something Rotten!…is fresh and hysterical and irreverent. It’s easily the funniest thing to arrive on Broadway since The Book of Mormon…the song A Musical, in which the writers get to goof on such shows as Rent, Pippin, Les Miserables, On the Town, Annie and the Rockettes. It’s one of the highlights of a show that is full of them, all led by director Casey Nicholaw at his exuberant, daffy best…A stunningly good first act…invariably leads to a somewhat weaker second act, but that’s still better than most entire musicals on Broadway right now….”

In the Hollywood Reporter, David Rooney observed, “This is a big, brash meta-musical studiously fashioned in the mold of Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Producers and The Book of Mormon, loaded with crowd-pleasing showstoppers, deliciously puerile gags and an infectious love of the form it so playfully skewers…If the songs themselves are standard-issue show-tunes, they are elevated by dynamic staging and performances. Nicholaw can spin froth into a full-bodied confection, even if this one cries out for something more substantial at the finish.”

rotten8765Elysa Gardner of USA Today said, “Happily, the director/choreographer is Casey Nicholaw, whose distinctly joyful irreverence…is just what’s needed here…The talented players are key. Brian d’Arcy James buoyantly returns to Broadway as Nick…Nick prefigures certain skeptical scholars in believing that Shakespeare’s invention is not always truly his own. Certainly, as played by a devilishly funny Christian Borle, this Will’s a slippery fellow…Nigel, played by John Cariani — giving a relatively subdued performance, in which tenderness and goofiness are relayed with endearing understatement — is actually the more inspired of the siblings…Even if you haven’t brushed up on your Shakespeare recently — or your musical theater — you’ll find plenty that’s amusing, if little that’s memorable, in Something Rotten!”

All Tickets, Inc. has an amazing search engine that we offer completely free to anyone and everyone who has Internet access. We developed this unique search engine, known as Broadway TIX, so that people will know how much Broadway show tickets cost for any performance of every Broadway show and they can compare single ticket prices to group deals. Everything you need to know about the price of a ticket for any Broadway show is there!

At the same time, we are offering an unrivaled free ticket offer called The Best Broadway Group Comp Deal. If you purchase your Broadway group tickets through ATI, you will receive 1 free ticket for every 30 paid (unlimited comps) or 1 free ticket for every 25 paid (unlimited comps) if you buy your show tickets and another service, experience, or product through us such as hotel rooms, meals, group tickets to an attraction, a Step On Tour, etc.

You can use Broadway TIX to find the price of a single and group ticket and to calculate how much more you’ll save through our proprietary program- The Best Broadway Group Comp Deal

Doing the Math

An American in Paris is loved by audiences.
An American in Paris is loved by audiences.

If you went to Broadway TIX and wanted to go see An American in Paris on June 11, 2015, you would find that the highest priced single seat was $137.00 and the lowest priced was $47.00. You’d also see that if you bought group tickets you’d pay $123.30 for the most expensive ticket and $42.30 for the least expensive.

You might think, “Not a bad deal, I can see a show that has 12 Tony nominations for as little as $42.30 if I’m with a group. That’s a real deal.”

Now consider the deal you get with All Tickets, Inc. Let’s say you have 100 in your group and you are also purchasing a group dinner through All Tickets, Inc. That means that you qualify for 1 free ticket for every 25 purchased. So, you’ll receive 4 free tickets to the show. Before the comp deal, your average ticket price was $42.30 and with the deal it’s $40.67, which is about a 4.5% savings over the group rate.

If your group went with the highest price ticket, your average ticket price would be $123.30 before the free ticket deal. With 4 free tickets, it becomes $118.50. You can use the free tickets to lower the price for each participant, as some sort of special reward for people being amazing group contributors, or as prizes to raise some money for your group or organization. It’s totally up to you.

(If you buy your tickets anywhere else all you will get is the producer comps.) We also searched to see if any Broadway shows at all are presently offering free tickets to groups. They are not.

Group tickets offer great value. How much can you save? On average, you’ll pay about 30% less for a group ticket, with savings ranging from 20% and up to 50%. Plus, many shows offer Early Bird Discounts where groups can save an additional $10 to $20 per ticket. You can get such deals through a licensed group ticket agent such as All Tickets Inc.

Many people think that you need 20, 30 or more to get group ticket prices for a Broadway musical or play. But that isn’t the case. Each show determines how many are need at minimum for a group. Most Broadway shows have a minimum of 12 or 15 per group with some being as low as 10 and others being as high as 20. If you know a dozen people who want to see a show (or if you think you can get that number together), you can save a lot of money.

In addition to group savings and Early Bird Specials, you may be able to save even more by taking advantage of comp ticket offers. Comps are free tickets that are given to groups that purchase a minimum number of tickets.

Comp promotions vary. Usually comps are offered at the rate of 1 per every 25 or 30 tickets purchased with the maximum number of free tickets per group per performance being set at 4. Such deals are time-limited.

Producers often offer comps. You will get producer comps, if they are available, when you order thorough the box office or through a group ticket seller. Before purchasing tickets, savvy ticket buyers will check with group ticket agents and inquire if they are offering additional complimentary tickets. That’s right, some group agents will award you producer comps, if available, plus their own comps.

Also, if a producer is not providing comps to their show always check with licensed group ticket agents, as they may be offering comps to that show as long as you purchase your tickets through them. Comps are totally free in every way.

The Show

The 10-person cast is simply winning!

In 1988, when Into the Woods was first produced on Broadway, it won three Tonys, including Best Score (Stephen Sondheim) and Best Book (James Lapine). It also received numerous Drama Desk awards. The musical is filled with richly imagined characters, smartly written humor, and emotionally intense and honest moments.

Into the Woods takes some of the better-known fairytales, such as Rapunzel, The Baker’s Wife, Jack and the Bean Stock, Little Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella, and in the first act offers audiences versions of these tales that end happily. But in the second act, there’s a price to be paid for happiness, and various characters meet their demise, find heartache, and discover that the world is not as simple as first thought.

This is a tale beautifully told.
This is a tale beautifully told.

Revenge, mystery, and hatred overshadow the second act, as Sondheim and Lapine reveal that life is an amazing amalgam of wondrous happiness and hopeless strife. In the end, there is victory, redemption, and joy, and what was once thought to be simple has been revealed to be complex, and, at the same time rich.

The storytelling is witty, honest, and emotionally charged and the score and lyrics are engaging, genuine, and poignant. Into the Woods is a classic American musical that is enjoying a revival that has reimaged this work in a highly theatrical manner. (Note: this production is recommended for audiences ages 10 and above.)

chicago original
The original Chicago starred Gwen Verdon as Roxy Hart and Jerry Orbach as lawyer Billy Flynn.

Revivals are often hot tickets. All Tickets, which has group discounts and comps for all Broadway shows, including revivals, takes a look at the original Broadway and NY productions of some shows that are currently running and others that are scheduled.

Chicago and Gwen Verdon

Gwen Verdon was the original Roxy Hart and Jerry Orbach the first Billy Flynn in the musical “Chicago.” The original 1975 production earned 11 Tony noms and did not win one award. Losers that night were the creators, Kander and Ebb, Orbach, Verdon and Chita Rivera. Bob Fosse also lost out as choreographer, director and co-writer of the book. Still, the revival of ‘Chicago’ is the longest running American musical in the history of the Broadway stage.

Pump Boys and Dinettes

Original Playbill for Pump Boys and Dinettes.
Original Playbill for Pump Boys and Dinettes.

The revival of “Pump Boys and Dinettes” will star Bo Bice. The show was an Off-Broadway hit in 1981 and then a Broadway hit in 1982. It received four Drama Desk nominations and one Tony (Best Musical) but won none. The people who performed it created the concept musical.

Orphans with John Mahoney

John Mahoney
The three stars of the first production of Orphans all became famous.

In 1986 the Steppenwolf production of “Orphans “moved from Chicago to Off-Broadway. It brought fame to all three actors—John Mahoney, Terry Kinney and Kevin Anderson. It was directed by Gary Sinise and brought Sinise and Steppenwolf to prominence.

Jekyll & Hyde

The musical “Jekyll & Hyde” ran on Broadway for 1,543 performances, from 1997 through 2001. With music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, Frank Wildhorn and Steve Cuden and book by Leslie Bricusse, “Jekyll & Hyde” became very popular. Although it enjoyed a long run, it managed to lose $1.5 million. The revival, which has been on a successful national tour, looks to be more edgy, sexier and extremely passionate.

Revivals Offer Great Value

Jekyll
Jekyll & Hyde Broadway premiere production.

Revivals offer group ticket buyers great value. They were hits before, proven Broadway shows, which bring a cache of success to the stage. Call All Tickets Inc. at 1-800-922-0716 for more information, tickets and until December 31, 2012, COMPS!

BAT Audrey hep
Audrey Hepburn won so many hearts in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” Broadway premiere has been long awaited. All Tickets has included Tony-winner Richard Greenberg’s adaptation of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” in our COMP Promo, which ends December 31, 2013. Book your group tickets with All Tickets Inc. and you’ll receive 1 free ticket for every 30 purchased (up to 4 comps total). A stage adaptation of Capote’s novella, which was made into a hit movie with Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, has been long anticipated.

The Musical

In 1966, the musical version of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” which was originally entitled “Holly Golightly,” looked like it would be a huge hit. The book was by Abe Burrows and the music and lyrics by Bob Merrill, both of whom had numerous, impressive Broadway credits.

The cast included Mary Tyler Moore as Holly and Richard Chamberlain as Fred, the writer who falls in love with her. Other cast members included Sally Kellerman, Larry Kert, and Priscilla Lopez. The inimitable David Merrick produced the show.

BAT MTM
Richard Chamberlain and Mary Tyler Moore in the musical Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

But the production ran into problems out of town and Burrows, who was also directing the show, was replaced as book writer by Edward Albee. Although brilliant, Albee was an odd choice as book writer, Burrows also left the show as director and Joseph Anthony was hired.

Out of town, the show often ran four hours and there were constant rewrites, Cast morale was low and Merrick was unhappy on every level. The musical, which did make it to New York, never opened. It closed in previews.

Blake Edwards’ Movie

The film of Capote’s 1958 novella was released in 1961 and it was a huge hit. It introduced the song “Moon River”, which became singer Andy Williams’ signature tune, and along with Hepburn (Holly Golightly) and Peppard (Paul Varjak) the cast included Patricia Neal, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam.

BAT Hepburn singing
Hepburn sang “Moon River” in the film. It’s a beautiful moment.

The lovely Hepburn was charming, sophisticated and fragile while the handsome Peppard was strong, vulnerable and honest. This romantic tale was beautifully told and is still a treat to watch.

Charm, Wit and Heart

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a charming story. Holly Golightly wants to be rich and manages to connect with high society, while Fred, who in the novella is openly gay, attempts to ground her in reality. It will be interesting to see what playwright Greenberg does with the character of Fred and his relationship with Holly as the movie changed his name to Paul and instead of being gay, as he is in the novella, he was a man who was being kept by an older, married woman.

The Musical.”  Baily is also a part of The Repertory Dance Ensemble, a member of The Black Box Players, and a lead vocalist in a rock band called The Blackjacks.

Milly Shapiro

"Kinky Boots Broadway group discounts & comps All Tickets"

All Tickets Inc, , which offers group discounts and comps, is taking a look at pictures of the cast and creatives of “Kinky Boots.” “Kinky Boots” is a new Broadway musical from Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper. It’s based on the successful 2005 comic film of the same name, which offers a look at various issues, including acceptance, diversity and the definition of family.

Picturing Kinky Boots

Cyndi Lauper

We’re taking a true look at “Kinky Boots” by offering various pictures from the show in order to give you a sense of the style, energy and feel of the production. In picturing “Kinky Boots” we’ve slected photos from the Chicago production, rehearsals for Broadway and public relation shots.

Rehearsal Gallery

Looking at the rehearsal gallery for “Kinky Boots,” it’s evident that the cast is working hard on the various demands the show puts on them. The rehearsal process for a Broadway musical is intense and exacting. It is physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting. The point of the long, grueling rehearsal process is to create a show that is Broadway worthy in every way.
"Rehearsing the musical Kinky Boots"

Production Shots

The production shots from Chicago emphasize, appropriately, boots. Boots that are exotic, interesting and unique. High fashion balanced on high heals and utilizing polished, premium leather. They are funky, odd and, yes, kinky. At least that’s the impression one gets from the images. Charlie Price, the young man who decides to take over the shoe company after his father dies, and Simon/Lola, the person who teams up with Price to create an entrepreneurial odd couple, both learn a lot during the course of the musical. The lessons they learn are not always easy or kind ones, but they are invaluable life lessons.

Macy's Turkey on Broadway
Every Thanksgiving the biggest turkey in the world invades Broadway.

In “There’s No Business Like Show Business” (“Annie Get Your Gun”), the inimitable Irving Berlin wrote “Even with a turkey that you know will fold/You may be stranded out in the cold/Still you wouldn’t change it for a sack of gold/Let’s go on with the show.” A turkey in show business and on Broadway is a bad show. Hence every performer at some point in their career when asked the question, “How’s that show you’re rehearsing?” has answered, “Nah, it’s a real turkey.”

Macy’s Turkey Lone Broadway Bird

This year the Macy’s Turkey is the only Broadway bird we’re expecting to see. It shows up with all of the great floats, humungous balloons, Broadway performers and stars and bands (and don’t forget Santa) to celebrate America’s day of thanks and to kickoff the Holiday Season.

Lane stars in Forum

Nathan Lane will appear on Broadway in “The Nance!” All Tickets, which has group discount Broadway tickets and exclusive COMPS for “The Nance,” is excited to see Lane on Broadway again. Lane has won numerous awards, including two Tonys (“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “The Producers”), an Olivier (“The Producers”) and five Drama Desk Awards. It’s been two years since he has appeared on the Broadway stage.

The Nance

“The Nance,” which is written by Douglas Carter Beane (writer of the book for the musicals “Lysistrata Jones” and “Xanadu” and the play “The Little Dog Laughed”) has created a drama focusing on a gay actor in the 1930s who plays the stock character of a nance, which is a camp homosexual man often played by a heterosexual man. Lane will portray Chauncey Miles, a gay man who is a top nance performer. “The Nance” according to sources combines drama and burlesque sketches to reveal “the portrait of a homosexual man, living and working in the secretive and dangerous gay world of 1930s New York, whose outrageous antics on the burlesque stage stand in marked contrast to his messy offstage life.” This looks to be a great role for Lane. “The Nance” is part of All Tickets Inc. exclusive COMP Promo, which is offering group discount ticket buyers complimentary tickets if they book and confirm for any Broadway show by December 31, 2012.

Lane’s Roles

Lane with Matthew Broderick in The Producers.

Lane won his first Tony Award in 1996 for Best Actor in a Musical for the role of Pseudolus in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” He received his second in 2001 for his portrayal of Max Bialystock in “The Producers.” In 2005 he won the Olivier for that same role. Both Pseudolus and Max Bialystock were made famous by Zero Mostel. When Lane was offered the role of Tevye in the revival of “A Fiddler on the Roof” he turned it down as he didn’t want to gain a reputation for performing roles that were originated by Mostel. Lane is also known for his roles in many other Broadway shows. These include Nathan Detroit in the revival

Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in The Addams Family on Broadway.

of “Guys and Dolls” with Peter Gallagher and the part of Gomez Addams in the musical “The Addams Family,” which also starred Tony-winner Bebe Neuwirth. He has appeared in more than 30 major stage productions and over 24 motion pictures. He’s also known for his voice work, including being the voice of Timon in “The Lion King” and Snowbell in “Stuart Little.”

Duncan and Rigby Catching Peter

Long time Peter Pan Cathy Rigby is a fan of Peter and the Starcatcher
The Matrons of the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up have both showed up to see the Tony-winning, hit play Peter and the Starcatcher. Sandy Duncan and Cathy Rigby have both been to see the play, which was adapted from Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s best-selling 2004 children’s adventure book. It tells the story of how an English orphan became Peter Pan.
Of their visit, the man who plays Peter, Adam Chanler-Berat said,“It felt like Peter was out there watching me do Peter. Sometimes, to motivate yourself, you pretend like the person that you’re playing is out there in the audience that night and in some ways it felt like that.” What did the two female Peters think? Both loved it.
Duncan, who was in the audience on October 11 for the second time gushed, “I can’t say enough about it,” and Rigby, who enjoyed the show on October 14, observed, “It was one of the best things I’ve ever seen and I don’t usually gush but I’m protective of the part because I love it so much.”

Holly Hunter Off-Broadway

Actress Holly Hunter will star in a new play at one of Off-Broadway’s Sandy-damaged theatres—the Flea Theater in TriBeCa. Motown is coming to Broadway. Get group discounts & COMPS now.
All Tickets has great group discounts and comps for Broadway’s Motown the Musical. All Tickets was at the Motown Press Preview—a major event unto itself. Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, songwriter and record producer, was center stage for the Press Preview that included some of Motown’s greats, including Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin and the workshop cast of the upcoming high energy Broadway musical.

What’s Up with Motown?

Motown The Musical has been more of a rumor than a reality for those in the know on Broadway. In development for years and in secret rehearsals for over a year, the show made a huge splash at its press preview as some of the original stars, Gordy and the cast performed an array of Motown hits, including “Get Ready,” “My Girl,” “Dancing in the Street,” “You Really Got a Hold on Me” and “Ball of Confusion.” The group’s rendition of “Do You Love Me?” proved to be a humongous hit and Gordy, who has written the book for the new musical, proved to be both enigmatic and magnetic on stage.

What’s the Motown Story?

Motown’s Berry Gordy, center, surrounded by artists at the Press Preview.
We did find out what Motown is about (at least to a degree). Co-producer Kevin McCollum discussed Motown The Musicals basic plot. The musical will consist of flashbacks that flow from the story’s point of attack—1983 with Gordy under fire from discontent artists leaving, lawsuits and the pressure to produce a 25th anniversary special.  The musical reveals important events from Gordy’s formative years as a boy growing up in Detroit and moves back and forth from Motown in Detroit to the record company’s Los Angeles years. It’s a big story about a man who changed the recording industry in America and for black performers.

Motown Tidbits

The musical will feature the romance between Gordy and Diana Ross and will include three new songs by the Motown founder. One of the new songs is an upbeat homage to the great boxer Joe Louis. As much about the Civil Rights Movement and Black History as Gordy himself, the show looks to be expansive, energetic and infectious. The role of Gordy will be played by Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon and that of Ross by Valisia Lekae.  Both were in attendance and featured at the Press Preview.
Motown artists included The Supremes & Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

Motown Early Bird Tickets and Comps

All Tickets not only has Early Bird Group Tickets for Motown The Musical, but we also are offering complimentary tickets to groups. For every 30 tickets purchased per group per performance, your group receives 1 COMP. (Groups can receive up to 4 COMPS per performance.) These COMPS are only available when you purchase your tickets through All Tickets. Motown premieres March 11, 2013 and open April 14, 2013. It looks to be one of the biggest shows on Broadway in years. Laura Osnes stars as Cinderella on Broadway with Santino Fontana as her prince.Laura Osnes may be 5’ 5” but she’s up for playing big Broadway roles such as the lead in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Cinderella Broadway premiere. Osnes will create the role on Broadway in early 2013. The Minnesota native comes to the production with some great Broadway credits including Bonnie Parker in the musical Bonnie & Clyde, Sandy in Grease, Ensign Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Hope Harcourt in Anything Goes. She was nominated for a Tony last season for her performance in Bonnie and Clyde.

Osnes Grease Break

Cinderella star Laura Osnes with Grease co-star Max Crumm.
People first became aware of Osnes and her talent through the reality-TV series entitled Grease: You’re the One That I Want. Shown on NBC, the series focused on the casting of the lead roles of Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko in the 2007 Broadway revival of Grease, which was capitalized at $10 million. Osnes was chosen to play Sandy in the revival, which previewed at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on July 24, 2007 and opened on August 19.

The New Cinderella

Osnes will get to play a new kind of Cinderella who is quite different than the character played by Julie Andrews, Lesley Ann Warren and Brandy in various television productions of the musical. Playwright and librettist Douglas Carter Beane has rewritten the original book. Set in contemporary times, the character Cinderella is now more involved in solving her problems on her own and in saving the prince.
Osnes with co-star Jeremy Jordan in her Tony nominated role as Bonnie Parker in Bonnie & Clyde.
Beane has written the screenplay To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and various plays including The Country Club, As Bees in Honey Drown and The Little Dog Laughed, which was nominated for the 2007 Tony Award for Best Play. He was the book writer on the stage musicals Xanadu and Lysistrata Jones. Xanadu, which is an adaptation and parody of the movie musical, won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical and was nominated for the Tony for Best Book of a Musical.

The Perfect Choice

Osnes has a pure sounding voice that she controls with aplomb and genuineness. She’s able to utilize unique interpretive choices when performing a song. Osnes brings emotion to and through her singing and is able to make an audience feel the emotions of her character in the manner in which she interprets both music and lyrics.
Audiences thought Cinderella’s Osnes was perfect in Bonnie & Clyde as she won the Audience Choice Award.
She seems perfect for this version of Cinderella, which offers audiences a new, meaningful take on the most famous fairytale princess in the world. This production of Cinderella requires an actress who can not only put new energy into the lead character, but who also possesses the ability to make us forget the other wonderful actresses who have played the role and engrained themselves in our memories through television.

Along with her vocal and actor/singer skills, Osnes brings a sort of homespun feel to the stage that makes one feel as if she’s an Everywoman, while at the same time being beautiful princess material. There’s an inner beauty in her that is manifest in her outer being.

Tickets to See Osnes

You won’t want to miss Osnes, an amazing talent, as Cinderella. The musical will be on Broadway in early 2013 and All Tickets Inc. is offering a COMP PROMO. For every 30 tickets purchased groups receive 1 COMP (up to 4 COMPS total for each group per performance).

Dixon was nominated for a Tony for his performance in The Color Purple and LeKae was seen on Broadway as an understudy in The Book of Mormon and Ragtime.
Motown The Musical Broadway stars Brandon Victor Dixon as Gordy and Valisia LeKae as Diana Ross.
The rest of the cast has yet to be chosen and although the exact number in the show is not known this is expected to be a big musical. It’s rumored that the musical will cost around $200 million.

Berry Gordy

Berry Gordy created the Motown record label and after that numerous others. It was in Motor City, that is Detroit, Michigan, that Motown was born. Motown started after Gordy, who had some success as a songwriter in the mid 1950s, reinvested his profits from that venture and began producing songs by new talent. In 1957, he discovered the Miracles, whose lead singer was Smokey Robinson.
Berry Gordy outside Motown Record which was known as Hitsville, USA.
In 1959, Gordy used $800 he had borrowed from family members to start the Tamla record label. He also created Motown around the same time. He became adroit at recognizing new talent and over the course of time would discover some of the richest R&B, soul and pop talent in the US, including Diana Ross, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson.
On April 14, 1960, the Tamla and Motown labels were merged to become Motown. Now a little more than 53 years after Motown was founded, on April 16, 2013, the musical about Gordy, his life and American pop music will be first seen on Broadway.

Gordy, who is 82, is one of the show’s producers and the book writer. This musical looks to be monumental. The immense Motown catalogue will be featured in the show.

This is the Broadway debut

The Classic Musical

Cinderella has a rich history that school groups and others will find interesting. The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is based on the classic Cinderella fairy tale. It was written for and first premiered on CBS TV in 1957 starring Julie Andrews in the title role. It also starred Jon Cypher, Edith Adams, Kaye Ballard and Alice Ghostley. The production cost $376,000, which was a huge amount of cash at that time.

"Julie Andrews as Cinderella"
The original CBS production of Cinderella.

It was broadcast live in the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones in black and white and in color on March 31st. Cinderella received a delayed broadcast that same day in the Pacific time zone. That version was only in black and white.

Although Cinderella has been very popular over the years, with two other TV versions in 1965 and 1997 and stage productions at the London Coliseum (1958), New York City Opera (1993 and 1995) and a United States tour played from November 2000 through 2001, it has never been produced on Broadway.

The New Cinderella

"Brandy as Cinderella in 1997"
Brandy starred in the 1997 Cinderella remake.

The Broadway version will feature an updated book. Book writer Beane has been nominated for two Tonys and has been involved in numerous Broadway projects, including play doctoring Sister Act and book writer for Lysistrata Jones. His play The Little Dog Laughed was nominated for the 2007 Tony Award for Best Play.

The new book for Cinderella sets the story in modern day and is told with wit and irony and empowers Cinderella as she rescues the Prince. It’s a fairy tale for the 21st century and like other musicals on Broadway this season, such as Matilda and Annie, Cinderella provides student groups with positive images for girls.

"Bring It On:The Musical Broadway group discounts All Tickets"
Group discounts for the hit show Bring It On: The Musical from All Tickets. We also offer COMPS! Call 800-922-0716

The Broadway musical Bring It On, based on the popular cheerleading movie, is a hit! All Tickets has group discount tickets and COMPS for the energetic musical. Bring It On: The Musical is a lot of fun and offers a great amount of entertainment value. The plot focuses on a national cheerleading competition and that means the cheerleading teams in the play need to be topnotch. The New York Times recently made special note of the exceptional skill and rigorous physical challenges that Bring It On: The Musical requires. Bring It On, which was on a successful national tour before it summersaulted onto the stage of Broadway’s St. James Theatre, has a gifted and experienced creative team.

Bring It On Creative Team

The creative team for the musical is infused with Tony winners. Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights) and Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) created the score. The lyrics were crafted by Mr. Miranda and Amanda Green (High Fidelity). The book was written by Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q). Andy Blankenbuehler (In the Heights) choreographed and directed Bring It On.

This exceptional team has hit the mark in every way, making this production of Bring It On: The Musical a great evening out, especially for groups. Low group discounts plus COMP tickets only from All Tickets make this a huge value. Information on our time limited COMP Promo is available by calling 800-922-0716 or visiting All Tickets Inc. on the web.

What About Those Routines?

The cheerleading routines in Bring It On: The Musical are exceptional. They were created with the help of Jessica Colombo, who is an instructor and judge for the Universal Cheerleaders Association. This is an organization that runs cheerleading camps and produces competitions.

"Group discounts Bring It On: The Musical All Tickets Inc"
Bring It On: The Musical has exceptional cheerleading routines.

Ms. Colombo, who was hired as a consultant, is charged with ensuring the challenging and dangerous moves in the show are done safely and accurately. She also focuses on making sure they are dramatically sound. To this end, the cast has been split evenly between musical theatre performers and cheerleaders.

For Ms. Colombo Bring It On: The Musical has been a real learning experience. She had no idea how a production worked. As an exceptional, she didn’t realize there was a stage manager in charge of calling all the cues in the show during each performance. She thought the production just happened.

Making Cheerleading Theatrical

In order to make the cheerleading routines and moves dramatically sound, director/choreographer Mr. Blankenbuehler had to use his expertise.

"See Taylor Louderman in Bring It On: The Musical"
Taylor Louderman stars in Bring It On: The Musical

As he observed in a New York Times interview, he had to embrace “the cheerleading vocabulary and use it in a stylized way to match the emotional content” of Bring It On. He noted, “The cheerleading was killing” the audience due ti the fact that it is powerful in many different ways—emotionally, dramatically and technically.

Olympic Like

With the Summer Olympics being broadcast, there’s extra interest in physically demanding competitive experiences such as the cheerleading routines in Bring It On: The Musical. This show is very much about the competitive spirit, both the purity of it and the occurrence when it can go out of control.

How far will someone go to win? When does winning become too much? What is friendship and sportsmanship? These are some of the questions that this fine Broadway musical asks.

For group discount tickets to Bring It On: The Musical and exclusive COMPS contact All Tickets Inc. at 800-922-0716. It’s a wonderful show for the summer and early fall. See our new pin for Bring It On on our Great Broadway Shows to See board.

Paul Kieve is the illusionist behind Matilda and Ghost. All Tickets has discount tickets for both and COMPS for Matilda. All Tickets, which has Early Bird group discounts and COMPS for Matilda The Musical, had the chance to talk with illusionist Paul about his art. Kieve is world renowned, having created illusions for numerous stage productions and films. He taught Daniel Radcliff, the perennial Harry Potter, magic, and he created the amazing stage illusions for Ghost The Musical. One thing that Kieve is clear about when it comes to creating illusions on the stage or for film is that there is no such thing as “magic.” It is all illusion; that is his job in creating illusions on stage is to make people believe that it is really “magic.”

No Such Thing as Magic

Paul, who has been performing magic since he was 13 and is now 41 said in a recent interview, “Magic doesn’t really exist. You can’t say to an actor, ‘Would you show me five different ways you can vanish?’”

That means that whether Paul Kieve is working on Matilda The Musical, Hamlet or Ghost The Musical, he has to invent a way for the actor to disappear or rise into the heavens or transform into a ghost. Of course, it’s much different creating illusion for the stage than it is in doing it for film. In our first clip, Paul Kieve addresses the differences.

Illusion on Stage Vs. Film

Outside the Box

Paul is a student of illusion and has a great grasp of its history and also knowledge of tricks from long ago. Along with that, he possesses a highly creative mind, a wonderful sense of discover and an inclination towards humor. His work on Matilda and Ghost The Musical is outstanding.

In our next clip, we see Paul having some extra-added fun with a simple paper cup.

Paul Kieve Starting Out

As noted the man who created amazing illusions for Matilda and Ghost started out like a lot of professional illusionists. He was given a magic kit as a boy and the rest is almost 30 years of history. With a genuinely inquisitive nature as a huge asset, Paul Kieve pursued the world of illusion, mastering it.

In our final clip, he talks about how he got involved in illusion.

"Group discounts Matilda The Musical, directed by Matthew Warchus"
All Tickets has group discounts for Matilda The Musical, directed by Matthew Warchus,

All Tickets, which has group discounts and COMPS for Matilda The Musical, sat down a few months ago with some of the artists who created Matilda. Matilda, won 7 Oliviers and was selected overwhelming as the best musical in London this past season. It was when we were creating our groundbreaking study guide for Ghost The Musical that we had the pleasure to interview Matilda director Matthew Warchus, set and costume designer Rob Howell and lighting designer Hugh Vanstone. Over the years, all three have been involved as a team in numerous hit products and been honored with an array of awards.

Here are some exclusive insights into the art and craft of theatre that these three very active and engaging creatives who are responsible for Matilda The Musical offered All Tickets.

Matthew Warchus

Mathew Warchus, who we highlighted in an earlier Matilda blog, has a long and brilliant resume. Fairly recent projects include directing the trilogy of plays The Norman Conquests at London’s Old Vic Theatre and Boeing Boeing at New York’s Broadhurst Theatre (Tony nomination for Best Director of a Play). In the 2008-09 Broadway season, Warchus directed two productions. One was the transfer of his Old Vic production of The Norman Conquests, which was highly praised and won the 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Play. The other show was the 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Play, Yasmina Reza’s huge hit God of Carnage. Warchus won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. It was in 2010 that he directed the acclaimed RSC musical production, Matilda The Musical. That production transferred to the West End in October 2011.

Warchus is a highly creative, innovative director. As a director, he can handle numerous levels of creative thought at once, coordinating elements seemingly at will. He offered All Tickets insights into his process, including how he works with designers.

Rob Howell

Set and costume designer Rob Howell and Warchus have worked on numerous award winning productions, including Boeing Boeing, The Norman Conquests and Ghost The Musical. In this clip, Howell, who designed sets and costumes for Matilda The Musical, discusses his working relationship with director Mathew Warchus.

Hugh Vanstone

Hugh Vanstone, like Howell, is part of Matthew Warchus’ creative team that the director goes back to time and again. Hugh, who has been nominated for Tonys for Mary Stuart and Spamalot, has designed over 160 productions. He has won three Olivier Awards for Best Lighting Designer and was nominated for his work on Matilda The Musical.

In the clip below, Vanstone discusses what he enjoys most about the process of working on a musical.

A Christmas Story The Musical

"A Major Award" in A Christmas Story group discounts and COMPS from All Tickets"
The production number for “A Major Award” in A Christmas Story is priceless. See it for less with group discounts and COMPS from All Tickets.

A Christmas Story The Musical looks to be a new and exciting Holiday tradition for kids and families. The movie is already a must-see on Christmas Day and now the musical version brings this immensely funny and incredibly human story to the Broadway stage. The Story of Ralphie Parker and his family and friends is pure joy and set to music and replete with dance it’s even better. Think about it, there a big song and dance number called “A Major Award!”

A Christmas Story The Musical is a beautiful heartwarming story that every age group can enjoy. Remember this is a limited run (62 performances) and tickets will go fast! A Christmas Story The Musical will preview in early November.

Matilda The Musical

"Group discounts to see Miss Trunchbull in Matilda"
You may think that Miss Trunchbull in Matilda The Musical makes Annie’s Miss Hannigan look like Little Mary Sunshine! She is extreme.

Matilda The Musical makes its way from London to American in April 2013. This sure fire hit, which is based on the popular Roald Dahl book, is brilliantly staged by Olivier and Tony winner Matthew Warchus. Warchus was one of seven who won Olivers this year for their work on Matilda.

This is a magical rendering of the story that will enthrall, enchant and entertain all while providing girls with a positive role model and offering all insights into the abusive nature of bullying. But don’t worry, like Annie and A Christmas Story, Matilda has a happy ending.

A Christmas Story comes to Broadway and All Tickets has group discounts and comps! All Tickets has group discount tickets and COMPS to the Broadway premiere of A Christmas Story The Musical. Based on the film A Christmas Story, New York will welcome the show starting November 5th and running until December 30th. A Christmas Story, which focuses on the Parker family in Hohman, Indiana, successfully completed a five-city tour last holiday season and it’s sure to transport everyone who sees it in New York back to a simpler time.

What’s Your Favorite Part?

The highly quotable and memorable movie A Christmas Story is filled with wonderful moments. Who can forget Randy, Ralphie’s younger brother who never ate, and who was dressed in so many layers of winter clothing when he fell down he could not get up as he “lay there like a tick ready to pop.” Or what about the classic scene of Ralphie helping the Old Man change the flat tire only to knock the tire nuts into night, making him say the dreaded bad word of all bad words: “Fuudddggge!” (Only he didn’t say, “fudge.”) Or what about Scut Farkus and his yellow teeth and eyes and horrific laugh and the moment where Ralphie finally unloads on the bully? Or the Bumpus dogs filching the family turkey on Christmas Day and the wonderful rendition of “Deck the Halls” sung in the Chinese restaurant by the workers as the family is introduced to “Chinese turkey?”

The Christmas Quest

In A Christmas Story, Ralphie wants one thing for Christ- the Red Ryder air rifle but…!
What is Christmas to a kid if they don’t have a quest for the ultimate gift? For Ralphie in A Christmas Story it’s the Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle. That is all that he wants, but it seems as if he is destined to be disappointed. As just about everyone says to him, including his mother, teacher and Santa himself, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” (And of course when he does get the rifle, he just about fulfills the prophecy.)

Young Talent Abounds

John Rando will direct A Christmas Story, which features a book by Joseph Robinette and choreography by Warren Carlyle. Two young composers, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, have been cited by critics for their work on A Christmas Story. Song titles include (appropriately enough) “Red Ryder,” “Ralphie to the Rescue,” “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out” and “A Major Award.”

A Major Award

In A Christmas Story, the major award creates a major conflict
In A Christmas Story, The Old Man hears that he’s won a major prize and he cannot contain himself as the crate is delivered. What can it be? Perhaps a bowling alley? He reads the wooden crate before opening it, pronouncing the words boldly stenciled across it, as if they might be a clue to the contents, “Fra-gee-lay!” (“Fragile”). Or course when the crate is opened, the major prize is about as hideous as it can be. It’s a large lamp in the seductive shape of a woman’s leg, dressed in fishnets with the lampshade representing the bottom of a tasseled skirt which barely covers the buttock region.

The Old Man proudly places it prominently in the front living room window for all to see and although Mrs. Parker (the mother) tries her best to deal with the embarrassing eyesore eventually she accidently destroys it causing an uproar and debate that lasts for years. It is all simply hilarious.

Family for the Holidays

Do NOT try this! In A Christmas Story it ends up causing a whole lot of pain.
If the Holiday Season is about family, then the Parker family is one you’ll have to visit. They will be in residence in the musical A Christmas Story at the Nederlander Theatre and All Tickets can get you great group discount seats and will supply you with COMPS for this wonderful show. Call All Tickets today at 800-922-0716 or follow this link for more information on group prices, our time limited COMP PROMO and suggestions on how to make your trip to see A Christmas Story a very special event. (And yes, your tongue will stick to a metal flagpole if you lick it in the dead of a cold, harsh winter! Just ask Flick, if you don’t believe me.)

Pacino’s Shylock won him a Tony nomination. See his next great Broadway performance with group discount tickets and COMPS from All Tickets. All Tickets loves that Patti LuPone, Debra Winger and Al Pacino will all be on Broadway soon and that we can offer Broadway group discounts and COMPS. LuPone and Winger will star in the new David Mamet play The Anarchist and Pacino will star in the revival of Mamet’s powerful tale of salesmanship gone awry Glengarry Glen Ross. There’s a lot of star power here and great writing from one of America’s most unique creators of stage language.

LuPone and Winger

Winger, who will be on Broadway in Mamet’s The Anarchist, earned one of her three Oscar nominations for her work in Terms of Endearment.
There’s great buzz about The Anarchist for various reasons. Once again, Mamet has written a two-character play, which is something at which he excels. Other two character shows that are well known include Oleanna and A Life in the Theatre. The Anarchist focuses on a violent extremist (LuPone) who petitions for parole and the warden (Winger) who is determined to keep her behind bars.

Patti LuPone, who has won two Tonys, is no stranger to the Broadway stage, while The Anarchist marks Debra Winger’s debut on The Great White Way. Winger has been nominated for three Academy Awards with her most recent being for her intimate and complex portrayal of Joy Gresham in Shadowlands. Winger starred opposite Anthony Hopkins, who played writer C.S. Lewis. Mamet directs The Anarchist.

All Tickets has group discount deals for this show and also exclusive COMPS. The Anarchist is part of All Tickets COMP PROMO for all new incoming Broadway shows. For every 30 tickets purchased, groups receive 1 COMP (up to 4 total). Orders must be confirmed by September 30, 2012.

Pacino and Bobby Cannavale

Bobby Cannavale won a Drama Desk for his work with Chris Rock in Broadway’s The Motherf****er in a Hat. He next works with Pacino in Glengarry Glen Ross.Veteran film actor, Al Pacino, who recently won plaudits for his portrayal of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice on Broadway, is starring as Shelly Levene in the no-holds barred drama Glengarry Glen Ross. Bobby Cannavale, who received a 2011 Drama Desk Award for Best Actor for his work in The Motherf***er in a Hat, which starred Chris Rock, plays the free wheeling, smooth talking Ricky Roma, a role originally created with aplomb by Joe Mantegna. Cannavale has been in numerous films and TV series, including Third Watch, while as of late Pacino has returned to his roots, the stage.

Look for this latest version of Glengarry Glen Ross to be stellar and brutally honest. This is a great play for an actor such as Pacino who has great chops. It should be a fine addition to the Broadway season especially playing at the same time as the Steppenwolf production of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

If you have a group, you can see Al Pacino in Glengarry Glen Ross through All Tickets. We can make your group ticket purchase, and we have a special comp program, please inquire at 800-922-0716.

The musical Chaplin, which premiered at La Jolla Playhouse, features music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis and a book by Curtis and multi-Tony winner Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers and Hairspray). This is a big cast musical with 22 players. It would have to be big to trace the career of a man who grew up in extreme poverty and hardship to eventually become the most recognized face on the planet and one of the first movie stars. Chaplin’s life was filled with romance, conflict and glamour and, of course, controversy and scandal. Charlie Chaplin’s story has all the makings of a great Broadway musical.

She must also contend with the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, who is devoted to keeping the deceased wife’s memory alive. Based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 book of the same name, Matilda is written by playwright Dennis Kelly and has music and lyrics by Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin. Tony and Olivier Award winner Matthew Warchus directs it.

"Dorothy Loudon in Annie the musical won the Tony for Hannigan"
In Annie the musical, Dorothy Loudon won the Tony and was a huge hit as the bully Miss Hannigan.

For student groups, Annie deals with one topic that is very important, bullying. All Tickets, which has student discounts and COMPS, offers insights into Annie and bullying. Use this blog to help establish some specific topics for classroom discussion, including preshow questions and follow up questions.

What is Bullying?

Bullying occurs when a person or a group uses their power over another person in a manner that humiliates and degrades them. It is an abuse of power. It can include physical and/or psychological violence. Bullying has both short-term and long-term effects. It’s such a serious matter that the U.S. government has created a website devoted to the topic that includes information on how to recognize and stop it. Those involved in bullying can face severe penalties.

Miss Hannigan and Rooster

The primary bully with whom Annie must deal is the orphanage matron Miss Hannigan. Hannigan dislikes all little girls but she finds Annie to be especially unlikeable. Why? Along with being very frustrated and unhappy with her life Hannigan sees someone like Annie as a threat to her because people like the little, streetwise orphan.

Hannigan gets pleasure from mistreating the orphans. She punishes them needlessly, makes them do her work and berates them. As far as Annie is concerned, the orphanage matron uses everything in her power to control and even harm her because she knows that Annie has the drive and smarts to expose her abuses.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMTcQnmWut8&feature=plcp&list=PL9C22BDD46B7FC5E4
Bullies Hannigan and Rooster are looking to be on Easy Street in the musical ANNIE.

It makes sense that then another bully in the musical Annie would be related to Hannigan. Rooster, who is Hannigan’s brother, is a tough guy who is willing to do what it takes to control others. He’s devious and manipulative and uses his brain (which is fairly limited) to concoct a plan that will exploit Annie’s dearest dream—locating her real father and mother and living in a happy home.

Is Daddy Warbucks a Bully?

"Reid Shelton as Danny Warbucks in Annie"
Olivier Warbucks turns into the kind and loving “Daddy” Warbucks.

Student groups who see the Broadway production may wonder if Daddy Warbucks is a bully. He has a lot of bark but not very much bite. Physically, intellectually and monetarily, he’s a very powerful man but he never abuses that power. When he “acts” mean, it’s actually a defense mechanism, as he doesn’t want Annie and others to see him as being weak. He has a soft spot in his heart for the little girl and starts to envision her as the daughter he never had. That scares him. But he never uses his power to degrade, manipulate or hurt Annie. He’s no bully. Daddy Warbucks is a creampuff of sorts and a loveable one at that.

Looking at Bullying

When considering if someone is a bully in Annie or in real live take some time to think about and discuss the following:

  • Are their actions harmful to others?
  • Are they abusing their power and controlling and harming those who are weaker?
  • Is physical and/or psychological abuse used?
  • What’s the intention of their actions and the results?

For those being bullied, start by thinking about the following questions:

  • In what way are they vulnerable?
  • What are the bulling actions they are encountering?
  • What’s the effect of these actions?
  • What can they do to stop these actions?

These are basic questions that can be developed further once you see the play. Answers will be contingent upon the writing, physical movement and the manner in which the characters are interpreted by the actors and director.

Understanding Bullying Through Writing

Writing about something can really help put it in perspective. A few months ago All Tickets had the chance to sit down and discuss this important topic with Oscar winning writer Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost and Ghost The Musical). Take a moment to view the writer in the clip below where he discusses a writing exercise on bullying that can be used in the classroom and lead to further discussion and understanding of this topic.

Annie and Matilda

The character Matilda, like Annie, must deal with bullies. In the end, both girls a triumphant and are able to escape from their abusers. As we noted in our blog on bullying in Matilda, the young girl is able to be victorious over others by enlisting the help of an adult. Annie, to a degree, does the same thing.

All Tickets has low prices on student tickets for Annie and also Matilda and a special COMP EVENT. Annie, like Matilda, has numerous important themes and bullying is one of them. For more information on Annie or Matilda and our special COMP offers call 800-922-0716 or link to us here.

"All Tickets, has deals on group sales, looks at first production of Annie"
Tony nominated Shelton and McArdle in the original Broadway production the the musical Annie.

All Tickets, which has great deals on student discounts (starting at $39.00) and other group tickets for Annie, is looking at the history of the original production of the musical and its former cast members. As groups have contacted us to take advantage of our exclusive COMP PROMO, we’re struck by how many of them remember former young actresses who played Annie in the original Broadway production, which was directed by Martin Charnin. In 1977, Annie won 7 Tonys, including Best Musical, and 7 Drama Desk Awards. It ran for close to six years.

Original Cast

"All Tickets, with low student discount prices, looks back at Annie"
Dorothy Loudon won the Tony as Hannigan in Annie, beating out McArdle.

Of the original Annie cast, three were nominated for their performances. Reid Shelton, who played the role of Oliver Warbucks for six years, was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. He did not win. Two actresses, Andrea McArdle as Annie and Dorothy Loudon as Miss Hannigan, received nominations for Best Lead Actress in a Musical. Loudon won the Tony.

But it was McArdle who created a name for herself as Annie. As it is for many child stars, that role would be a tough one for her to leave behind.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i1RjfAmVtg&feature=plcp&list=PL9C22BDD46B7FC5E4
McArdle sings Tomorrow and later in the video the orphans, with Danielle Anne Brisebois, tear up the place.

The cast of orphans also included a young performer who would go on to be a TV star. It was Danielle Anne Brisebois (Molly). She was the youngest and smallest in the cast. Her dance moves energized the house in Hard Knock Life. She went on to star in All in the Family and in the spinoff Archie Bunker’s Place. She is now 43 and continues to have a productive acting and singing career.

Many More Annies

"McArdle as Hannigan in Annie from All Tickets"
McArdle played Hannigan in a 2010 production of Annie.

Many think that McArdle was the original Annie. She was not. The first Annie was Kristen Vigard who was cast in the role for the premiere at the Goodspeed Opera House prior to Broadway. But producers felt she was too sweet to play the street-smart orphan and McArdle moved up from being an orphan to replace her. Vigard became the Broadway understudy for the lead role.

There were many different little girls who played Annie in the original run, including early cast member Shelly Bruce who first played Kate. Allison Smith was the fourth Annie. Alyson Kirk was the first to play Annie on Broadway after initially going on national tour with the show. Sarah Jessica Parker, of Sex and the City fame, played the role of July on Broadway before being cast as Annie.

A New Deal

"Sarah Jessica Parker years ago from All Tickets discount Annie tickets"
Sarah Jessica Parker as Annie on Broadway.

The latest Broadway revival of Annie is a whole new deal as James Lapine directs and book writer Thomas Meehan is at work revising the script. The production will be at the Palace Theatre with Lilla Crawford as Annie, Katie Finneran as Hannigan and Anthony Warlow playing Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks.

Annie is an optimistic show that has a whole lot of heart, energy and theatricality. It’s a great family show and is wonderful for schools. Along with student discounts and low-priced tickets for other groups, All Tickets COMP PROMO continues as groups receive 1 COMP for every 30 purchased (up to 4 per group; this offer expires September 30, 2012). Oh, wait a minute! Check our newsletter, Tweets and this blog for an extra special PROMO on Annie and Matilda! Warning—it will be a great deal and extremely time sensitive! People are keenly focused on Matilda coming to Broadway and our group discounts and comps.

All Tickets Inc., which affords groups THE TOTAL NEW YORK EXPERIENCE, has the best deals on Broadway discounts for students and groups and is offering a special COMP PROMO for all incoming shows, including Matilda the Musical and the Broadway revival of Annie. At All Tickets we separate ourselves from the competition through our total commitment to service, our exclusive special deals and our ability to give you more for your money.

COMPS to Matilda and Annie

Business has been brisk, as groups have been responding to our COMP PROMOTION. Groups are interested in knowing why we are offering COMP tickets and no one else is. How are we able to offer the best deals on Broadway show tickets to musicals such as Annie and Matilda? Here are some of the questions we get and our answers.

"Group discount tickets to see Annie directed by James Lapine"
James Lapine with Stephen Sondheim. Lapine, who directs Annie, wrote and directed Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods.

When All Tickets gives COMPS do you somehow charge extra for the other tickets? The answer is “no.” Our group ticket prices are the lowest you will find and there are NO EXTRA CHARGES..

“Why do you have COMP tickets when no one else does?”
The answer is simple—we purchase your comp tickets. That’s right. If you buy 30 tickets at $69 per ticket, then we purchase an additional one for you at the same price.

“If it costs you money, why are you offering COMPS?”
The answer comes down to two things. The first is we see it as a way to say to you, we want your business and we are serious about attracting and keeping it. The second is it’s an incentive and if it got your attention and brought you to us and you purchased your tickets from us, then we are on our way to creating a long term relationship with you.

“So you’re in this for the long run?” We are in this for the long run and we want you to be in it for the long run with us. We want to engender brand loyalty.

Two Great Shows

It’s true that we are providing COMP TICKETS to all incoming shows, including the musicals Bring It On, Fela!, Chaplin and Rebecca and the plays Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Fat Pig and The Anarchist, but we’ve seen exceptional interest in Annie and Matilda. Annie has a solid reputation and is a Tony winner of great magnitude and Matilda is the most honored musical to ever grace the British stage. These facts are partly responsible for the keen interest in these two Broadway shows.

Hope, The Good Fight, Triumph

"Andrea McArdle as Annie and now"
The musical Annie is 35 years old. Andrea McArdle originated the role of Annie on Broadway.

Both Annie and Matilda contain hope, the good fight and the triumph of the underdog over the bully. These aspects and themes, which are focused on girls achieving the extraordinary, are keenly interesting, moving and inspirational to audiences. Both musicals are wonderful family shows that will take you on a rollercoaster ride that ultimately ends happily. They teach important lessons, have great stories and are winners through and through.

Music, Lyrics, Story and Characters

The music from Annie is stirring Broadway fare and the compositions for Matilda are simply wondrous. At times the lyrics for both are clever and at other times moving but they are always genuine. And the stories and characters are larger than life, which helps to make them highly theatrical and amazingly interesting.

"Annie the musical Broadway student and group discounts"
Annie the musical arrives on Broadway at the Palace Theatre in October. All Tickets has student and group discounts and exclusive COMPS.

Groups, student, seniors and others, are taking advantage of All Tickets discounts and exclusive COMP promo for the revival of the musical Annie. It’s been extremely busy in our office for Annie, which previews October 3. The cast is assembled and Tony winning director James Lapine and Tony winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler are hard at work in rehearsals preparing for their first performance at the famed Palace Theatre.

There’s a lot of great buzz about Annie and All Tickets low, discount ticket prices (Student Groups start at $39.00) and exclusive COMP PROMO (1 free ticket for every 30 purchased up to 4 per group) has attracted a lot of attention. But why are people so interested in seeing Annie?

The Underdog Hero

Annie is the ultimate underdog hero. She’s an orphan who is being misused by then orphanage matron Miss Hannigan and does not seem to have a chance. The world is against her, but we’re not. We’re rooting for her.

"Annie on Broadway with Lilla Crawford get group discounts at All Tickets"
It’s all those “Little Girls” that Miss Hannigan hates so much. Led by Lilla Crawford, upper left hand corner, as Annie.

We’d expect her to lose, except for the fact that she has spunk, a wonderful heart and a voice that knocks audiences dead as she belts out optimism in the ringing ballad “Tomorrow!” and doles out cheer in songs like “N.Y.C.” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.”

She gets to “escape” on a special Christmas holiday as the guest of the apparently cold-hearted millionaire Daddy Warbucks (a real Creamsicle inside) and wins the admiration and love of everyone—Grace Farrell (Warbucks’ secretary), F.D.R. and the nation that is in the midst of such a terrible depression that it’s redefined the term “bottom dollar.” Annie even wins the heart of the stern, intimidating Warbucks.

Villains

This ultimate rags to riches story has some of the best villains to ever appear on the musical stage. There’s Miss Hannigan, the always half-in-the-bag, head of the orphanage who sings the darkly comedic “Little Girls,” Rooster, Hannigan’s no-good brother, and Lily St. Regis, Rooster’s girl.

"See Katie Finneran as Hannigan in Annie with group discounts All Tickets"
Two time Tony winner Katie Finneran plays the devious Miss Hannigan.

The three hatch a plot to have Rooster and his girlfriend pose as Annie’s long-lost parents and collect Annie and a $50,000 reward posted by Daddy Warbucks. The reward is designed to encourage Annie’s real parents come forward and claim her. Rooster, Lily and Hannigan sing about their plot in the driving and devious “Easy Street,” which is so deliciously evil and fun it brings down the house. (We hate these villains but love them too!)

Good Versus Evil

The musical Annie is the ultimate journey of the good hero being tested by the evils of the real world. Annie is our hero and despite all odds, she wins in the end. She not only finds a home with Daddy Warbucks, Grace Farrell and the rest of the Warbuck ensemble, but she helps put the bad guys in jail, make life better for all the other orphan girls and inspires F.D.R. to create a New Deal for the country and saves the nation. (Oh, yes, and don’t forget the stray dog, Sandy, who she makes her own at the start of the show but loses. In the end, she gets him back too!)

Not bad for a little girl who starts out the show singing the semi-hopeful “Maybe” and the up tempo number about being repressed, “Hard Knock Life.”

"Palace Theatre will host Annie group discounts from All Tickets"
In the old days, you could see the facade of the Palace Theatre, which was the premiere venue for vaudeville.

All Tickets, which has discount tickets for Annie and is offering COMPS, thinks that the booking of the musical about Little Orphan Annie at the Palace Theatre makes for a great fit. You’ve got Annie, the little girl who goes from rags to riches, and the Palace, which was formerly known as the Mecca for vaudeville performers, which has gone from riches to rags to riches again. Plus, both are tops when it comes to entertainment!

It’s true that like Annie, the Palace Theatre has been through some rough times and great times. When considering a group theatre experience seeing a fantastic show like this wonderful Broadway musical in such a rich historical venue and at low discount prices affords audiences a priceless experience.

Playing the Palace

If you were a vaudeville act in the early part of the 20th century and were booked at the Palace, then you had reached the pinnacle. This creation of this performance space, which was build by San Francisco vaudeville producer Martin Beck, was an attempt to create some competition for the monopolistic Keith-Albee group.

Benjamin Franklin Keith and Edward Franklin Albee dominated the East Coast vaudeville circuit. Along with owning some of the biggest and best vaudeville houses throughout the East and into the Midwest, Albee created the United Bookings Office, which controlled the contracts of just about every major vaudeville performer in the US.

"Ed Wynn at the Palace Theatre, Broadway"
Comedian Ed Wynn opened the Palace Theatre.

The 1,740-seat Palace Theatre opened on March 24, 1913, operating as a vaudeville house until approximately 1929. The irony is Martin Beck never did challenge the preeminence of Keith-Albee. In order to contract the top performers in America, who were controlled by Albee and Keith, Albee requested that Beck award him with three-quarters ownership of the Palace Theatre. Beck agreed and with that the theatre, which will next feature the musical Annie, became the showcase for Keith-Albee.

The biggest performers played the Palace. Fanny Brice, Ed Wynn, Ethel Barrymore, Bert Williams, Lillian Russell, the Marx Brothers and Will Rogers are just a few of the stars who graced the stage of this historic performance space.

Before Going Legit

Annie is playing in what has been a legitimate Broadway theatre since 1966 when Sweet Charity opened. (The term “legit theatre,” “legitimate theatre,” or the use of corresponding terms such as “stage” or “house” in place of “theatre” refers in the UK to a licensed theatre and in the US to a theatre that shows plays and musicals as opposed to variety, vaudeville and other such types of entertainment.) But before going legit, the Palace went down a road that was well traveled by many other performance venues.

"Judy Garland on stage at the Palace Theatre Broadway"
Judy Garland’s last show at the Palace.

In 1929, as vaudeville died and the economy took a major nosedive, Joseph P. Kennedy took over the venue and turned it into a movie house, renaming it the RKO Palace. Orson Wells’ Citizen Kane premiered at the movie palace in 1941.

In 1949, producer Sol Schwartz revamped the performance space in an attempt to revive the great days of vaudeville. He showed eight acts and then a feature film. Great stars, including Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Danny Kaye and Harry Belafonte played the Palace, and in 1951, Judy Garland broke the record at the venue with a 19-week engagement.

Legit at Last

The Nederlander Organization transformed the Palace Theatre into a legit stage with the premiere of Sweet Charity. And although over the years the façade and pretty much the entire theatre has been surrounded by a hotel and huge Broadway billboards, the Palace Theatre is still a royal place to play.

Annie The Musical

"Group discounts to see Lilla Crawford in Annie at the Palace"
New Annie Lilla Crawford made a special appearance at this year’s Tonys.

The musical Annie, which will star Lilla Crawford in the title role and with Anthony Warlow as Daddy Warbucks and Katie Finneran as Miss Hannigan, takes place in 1933 during the Great Depression when the Palace Theatre was then doing duty as a movie theatre. Of course, both the Palace Theatre and Annie are NYC institutions, making this connection between theatre and musical a winning one.

The brilliantly entertaining Matilda deals with some important issues including bullying and how girls are perceived and treated by society.

The revival of Annie, which will have a reworked book, is on track for the fall and is being directed by one of the best around, James Lapine. And in a few days the amazingly innovative musical FELA! will be on Broadway for a limited run.

"Group discount tickets for Al Pacino in Glengarry Glen Ross"
Al Pacino, who starred in the film Glengarry Glen Ross, will now star in the Broadway revival.

There’s very rich drama coming up too. The Anarchist by David Mamet will star Pattie LuPone and Debra Winger. There’s a lot of excitement about this show that is also directed by Mamet. It was recently announced that this season Al Pacino will be in a Broadway revival of Mamet’s hit Glengarry Glen Ross. Plus, Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? comes to The Great White Way as the acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company mounts their production.

Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig, a comedy, has its cast in place and will be prepping for a Broadway run soon and the revival of Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth with Nicole Kidman will be gearing up shortly.

Motown Arrives Soon

We noted in an earlier blog that the musical focusing on Motown founder Berry Gordy, which is entitled Motown, would be coming to Broadway this season. It was announced the other day that it is on the fast track and official announcements regarding the theatre, previews and opening night will be coming shortly.

"Ethel Merman in Annie Get Your Gun"
Ethel Merman sang There’s No Business Like Show Business in boffo Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway.

Today All Tickets, which offers great group discounts to Broadway shows, considers theatre lingo. Irving Berlin wrote “There’s no business like show business” and he was right. Especially when it comes to how theatre pros speak and the language they use. Like many other professions, the theatre has it’s own language. The first time anyone is on stage acting, they learn the terms downstage, upstage, stage right and left and center because of they don’t understand what they, they will have no idea where they should be.

On Broadway, or pretty much anywhere else, if the stage manager said, “10 of 12 in three days; finish paper tech today and start dry tech tomorrow, cue to cue. Call’s at 10,” everyone would understand exactly what was going to happen the next three days. But someone who was not theatre savvy might require a translation.

Theatre Speak Translation

That translation would be—“10 of 12 in three days” (Working 10 out 12 hours in three days in a technical rehearsal with actors.); “finish paper tech today” (the stage manager will be talking through the show’s cues and recording them in their book with designers/assistants as they prep for the technical rehearsals where sets, lights, sound and effects are added); “and start dry tech tomorrow, cue to cue. Call’s at 10” (All the technicians are called but no actors and they will run the show going successively through cues, which includes any set shifting, light changes, sound, etc. Everyone be at the theatre by 10 am.)

Four Theatrical Terms

I’ve chosen four common terms or phrases that when said around non-theatre folks tend to raise questions or even dumbfound them.

A Ben Hur

Sometimes someone will say something like, “Yeah, we’re doing Les Miz, this one’s a Ben Hur.” (Or sometimes “a real Ben Hur” is the phrase used.) Basically, it means a huge production that is immensely difficult to coordinate. Although many people think this phrase is related to the movie versions of the General Lew Wallace book of the same title. But this phrase is purely theatrical.

"Ben Hur on Broadway"
The stage play Ben Hur was famous for its chariot race.

Long before the silent version of Ben Hur and even longer before the Charlton Heston remake the novel Ben Hur was adapted for the stage. The show was massive and included a scene that simply thrilled audiences for years. That scene was the famous chariot race. On stage it included two chariots, live horses running on treadmills towards the audience, fans to kick up dust and a revolving cyclorama of the Roman Circus upstage of all to reinforce the illusion of a race being run. That was in 1899 and Ben Hur was a massive hit that toured America and played New York for about 20 years. Now that production was THE “real Ben Hur.”

Break a Leg

It sounds odd to folks but “break a leg” is what you say to actors or musicians before they go on stage. (Don’t say it to dancers. You say “Merde” to them. This is also used in the theatre at times.) No one ever says “good luck” to an actor, because it is bad luck to do so. It’s like a jinx. And believe me if you wanted to test this you would only say “good luck” once to folks backstage and never again as icy stares and cold shoulders would send you into the next Ice Age.

"break a on Broadway"
You have to break your front leg a bit in 17th century France when taking your bow

Why “break a leg?” There are many explanations but no one knows for sure. The best one I have heard is that in 17th century France if you “broke your leg” in performance, that is placed one leg forward and at the knee bent it a bit, you’d be in a relaxed position which would enable you to have a good performance. Also, you would “break your leg” a bit at the knee during curtain call when you were being applauded and taking your bow. That also would be a good “break” for an actor. Especially if they broke their leg and bowed numerous times during the curtain call.

Turkey and Boffo

These two terms are direct opposites. A “turkey” in the theatre is a term that is usually used in response to the question “How’s the show?” If the answer is “It’s a real turkey,” that means it’s a terrible piece of theatre and will close quickly. As Irving Berlin wrote in There’s No Business Like Show Business, “Even with the turkey that you know will fold, You may be stranded out in the cold. Still you wouldn’t trade it for a sack o’ gold, Let’s go on with the show.”

"Broadway theatre and turkeys"
A turkey in the theatre is bad news.

The term comes from vaudeville when they ran the show no matter what day it was even on Thanksgiving. But the Thanksgiving show never included the good acts as they had the holiday off. Thus, the “turkey” in vaudeville was the Thanksgiving show that was comprised of inferior performers.

Now if a show is “boffo” you are golden. Why is that? Because boffo is slang for big box office. Thus, if a show is doing “big box office” (boffo) it is a hit and selling a lot of tickets. Please note, this is my understanding from my experience in the theatre. If you look it up, you’ll find that it means “a resounding success.” And it may be used in this manner, “boffo box office.” But whatever the case may be, boffo is always used in connection with how a show is selling and if it is “boffo” it’s doing BIG BOX OFFICE!

"Matilda the musical comps and discounts"
Matilda’s father is a terrible bully.

All Tickets, which is offering great group discounts on all new Broadway shows and is kicking off the season by offering a special and exclusive time-limited COMP PROMO, is taking some time today to focus on a very important issue—bullying. We’re highlighting this issue as it relates to the incoming musical Matilda.

Bullying has become an important issue in schools as those being bullied for years to come can feel its effects. The bully wields their power over another person by intimidating them in various ways. Psychological and physical violence are a part of bullying. How important and devastating is bullying? The US government has an entire website focusing on bullying, including defining the activity and offering important information on how to stop it.

The Bully in Matilda The Musical

Matilda The Musical, which won seven Oliviers this year and arrives on Broadway in April 2013, is a story rife with bullying. In fact, it is the story of a young girl who is able to overcome the efforts of two major bullies in her life—her father, Mr. Wormwood, and the headmistress of her school, Miss Trunchbull.

Bullies pick on those who they see as being vulnerable and Mr. Wormwood and Miss Trunchbull understand clearly the manner in which little Matilda is vulnerable. Matilda is an extremely gifted and smart little girl who lacks the physical power and the adult authority to free herself from the grips of adults who abuse their power. When her father, who has incessantly bullied and belittled her, sends her away to school you may think there is hope. But it’s clear that Miss Trunchbull, the amazon who runs that boarding school, is a massive bully.

"See Matilda and Miss Trunchbul on Broadway with group discounts"
In Matilda, Miss Trunchbull bullies many, including Miss Honey.

Matilda is saved by her developing special powers, her bright mind and by someone else who had been and still is the victim of bullying—Miss Honey. Miss Honey, one of her teachers, comes to Matilda’s aid, as she knows firsthand what it is like to suffer from the endless ridiculing and intimidation of a bully. (She too was abused in this manner by Miss Trunchbull, who is her aunt.)

Ghost The Musical and Bullying

All Tickets had the opportunity to create the official study guide for Ghost The Musical. We interviewed cast and creative team members, including Oscar winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin who wrote the film and musical Ghost.
[vimeo vimeo.com/39122687]
Rubin provided insights into bullying and included suggestions for a writing exercise that teachers could use to help students better understand bullying. As Rubin observed, children often misunderstand bullying and they often need guidance in understanding the serious nature of its effects.

Matilda is a Jolt of Optimism

Matilda The Musical offers optimism on various levels. There’s a lot of good news in this entertaining and thoroughly engaging musical. It’s an uplifting show where those who are the victims of bullies triumph and it provides an important positive message for all children and especially girls.

Right now group discounts are substantial for Matilda and only All Tickets is offering COMPS to groups. Book before December 31, 2012, and for every 30 tickets purchased, you’ll receive 1 COMP (up to 4 total per group per performance). For more information see our eblast or call All Tickets at 800-922-0716. We may also be messaged through the All Tickets Contact Page. Call today to get the best possible seats, group discounts and our exclusive COMP PROMO.

We are also offering COMPS for all new incoming Broadway productions, including Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the musical Chaplin, David Mamet’s new drama The Anarchist and the haunting musical Rebecca. Offers vary depending on the show and opening, so please call for more information on All Tickets COMP promo.

George II, the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen
No, not director Matthew Warchus. This is the first modern-day director. Read more to find out who he was.
Director Matthew Warchus, who won he latest Olivier for his direction of Matilda, is also the director of Ghost The Musical, which is currently running on Broadway and in London. All Tickets sat down with Matthew, who is also a Tony-winner, and discussed directing and theatre. It was an enlightening conversation as we discovered how one of the most successful young stage directors sees his job and the effect of theatre on audiences. First, we offer a little background on the first modern-day theatre director. You see the formal position of stage director is a relatively new one.

The Director in the Theatre

Although there seems to have always been someone in charge of a production (even 2,500 years ago back in Ancient Athens) the formal position of director (that person whose vision you see on the stage) was not created until the late 19th century. The first director of the modern age was a nobleman—the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, George II.

George II was extremely interested in theatre. So much so that he created his own theatre company and directed them. George II was the first person that we know of who coordinated all elements of a production and created a unified vision for a stage production. He took every element into consideration. Although his Meiningen Players started out as an ensemble that performed before the court, they eventually toured the world and became extremely famous.

In fact, they are the company credited with inspiring a young actor named Stanislavski to re-envision acting, directing and the theatre in Russia. He had seen the Players twice when they toured Russia and was amazed at the ensemble nature of their shows and the historical accuracy of the productions. Stanislavski would not only transform theatre and acting in Russia, but his Method would change acting in the US, influencing major directors and actors from the early part of the 20th century on.

What is Directing?

Matthew Warchus has a unique vision of his job. When you speak with him, it’s clear that he thinks on multiple levels simultaneously and also has the ability to isolate each thought, develop it and then put it back into the mix of about which whatever he is speaking. From All Tickets Vimeo vault, he’s Matthew on the art of directing.

[vimeo vimeo.com/39089099]

How Do You Become a Director?

The director of Matilda also offers some helpful advice about how young people who are interested in directing can get started. He also provides some insights into personality types that he feels lend themselves to the job of directing, which is a lonely one despite the fact that the director is constantly in communication with everyone involved in the show.

[vimeo vimeo.com/39090491]

The Effect of Theatre

Theatre is an art form that has a unique effect on people. What is that effect like? Matilda and Ghost The Musical director Matthew Warchus provides his ideas on this subject.

"Group discounts from All Tickets to see Winger in The Anarchist"
Debra Winger marks her Broadway debut in The Anarchist by David Mamet.

All Tickets, which is offering group discounts and a limited time COMP PROMO for the Broadway premiere of The Anarchist by David Mamet, is truly excited by new of the playwright’s latest offering. The announcement that Patti Lupone and Debra Winger will star in the Broadway premiere directed by Mamet was then greeted with another casting announcement for yet another drama by the US playwright. It turns out Al Pacino will star in this season’s revival of Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross.

Mamet’s Connection to Actresses

It’s well known that Mamet, who will direct the show, has a direct connection with Patti Lupone. The actress, who in The Anarchist will play Cathy, a woman prisoner with long time ties

to a violent political organization, has appeared in The Woods, The Water Engine, Edmond, The Old Neighborhood and the film State and Main. Lupone, who has been nominated for six Tonys and won two (Evita and Gypsy), has proven to be equally adept in handling roles in plays and musicals.

Debra Winger also has a connection with Mamet. Winger, who has been

nominated for three Oscars (Terms of Endearment, Shadowlands and An Officer and a Gentleman), acted with the playwright in the movie Black Window in which she starred with Theresa Russell. Winger, who played Detective Alex Barnes, and Mamet, who was cast as Herb the poker player, appeared in the poker scene together.

All Tickets notes that this is Winger’s Broadway debut. She will play the prison warden, Ann, to whom LuPone’s character pleads for parole. This play is being described as a tough, hard-hitting drama, a genre at which Mamet excels.

What to Expect?

The Anarchist is a two-character drama that’s driven by two female characters who are savvy and dedicated to ensuring they secure their intended objectives. This battle of wits looks to be the equivalent of a high stakes battle where life itself, or at the very least freedom and justice, are on the line.

"Group discounts to The Anarchist on Broadway"
Mamet, who will direct the Broadway premiere of The Anarchist, has a definitive writing style.

Mamet writes plays with dialogue that alternates between realistic-based segmented exchanges of sentences displaying authentic rhythms and degenerating sounds and long riffs and tirades that culminate in some sort of stunning revelation. To put it succinctly, Mamet’s dialogue uses the power of realistic speech patterns to define character and push each character’s objectives.

This is not easy material to perform due to the fact that it has such complex rhythms but when performed with the right technique the result is often stunning.

"Matilda on Broadway COMP PROMO All Tickets"
The little girl has big meaning in the musical Matilda.

There are so many reasons why audiences need to see the musical Matilda when it comes to Broadway. The show has been a huge hit in London, winning every major award and more Oliviers than any show before. The book, by Roald Dahl, was hugely popular. All of these recommend Matilda as a great evening in the theatre. But there’s more here than just a great show, and All Tickets thinks it’s an important consideration for groups, especially school, camp and community groups.

A Girl’s Self-image

This show will resonate with girls for many reasons but there is a major one of which groups need to be aware. This musical Matilda offers young girls an amazingly positive image. It’s one that shows that the girl who is different and who is smart has power. It creates an affirmative message for girls and provides them a vision of success through tenacity, intelligence and knowledge. The lesson is about being yourself, having confidence in that self and staying true to who you are. These are all important.

NYU Child Study Center

According to the NYU Child Study Center, girls need positive images as they have to battle massive media projections, peer pressure and societal expectations that can hamstring their attempts at success and feelings of positive self-worth.

"Matilda the Musical Group Discounts All Tickets"
Matilda is belittled by her father.

On its webpage entitled How to Raise Girls with Healthy Self-Esteem, Dr. Anita Gurian writes, “As girls grow and develop, their overall sense of self-esteem and personal worth grows and changes, too. Self-esteem is about how confident we feel about our talents and abilities, not just how others may perceive us. Girls with high self-esteem feel secure about themselves, regardless of how smart or successful others say they are. These girls express their feelings, make positive choices, and care about others.”

Wow, if that’s doesn’t define the battle for Matilda, I don’t know what does? And although women are graduating in record numbers from institutions of higher learning and gaining entry into key positions in important sectors, Dr. Gurian observes, “one might assume that girls today grow up having confidence in their ability to fulfill their aspirations. But along with their newfound opportunities and freedom of choice, girls continue to face particular pressures on their self-esteem.”

Beyond Harry Potter

Harry Potter has been hugely influential throughout the world. There’s no doubt about it. It offers great positive images for kids. But All Tickets notes that girls in Harry

"Matilda on Broadway COMPS from All Tickets"
Matilda must persevere.

Potter are secondary and, as everyone knows, Harry Potter is the primary focus of the series and the main protagonist despite the fact that Hermione Granger is an important aspect of the struggle for and victory of good. Note, Harry has two major cohorts, Ron and Hermione (the girl’s in the minority).

Matilda offers all children positive images and helps them understand their potential, but it does it in a world that is substantially the purview of girls in which a girl who is smart, ethical and open to growth finds a new life that will allow her to be herself and become a success. It’s an important message told in a highly effective manner.

Creating FELA!

FELA!, which was first a hit Off-Broadway, was born from the highly creative vision of choreographer/director/writer Bill T Jones. The show’s energy comes from the life of the highly controversial and talented artist Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Using the African artist’s music, which fused traditional African beats and sounds with jazz and funk, and combining it with extraordinary choreography, Jones creates a story that reverberates with resoundingly diverse energies. He has created a total theatre experience.

The Story

Nigeria, a country of extreme oppression, seething with violence and teeming with poverty, is the setting for this Afrobeat-inspired musical. We are taken on a journey that starts immediately as we enter the theatre, which has been turned into a memorial to Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

It is the 1970s and on stage is the lead character’s stage—a nightclub

platform from which he will play his music, fight his political battles and act the bad boy. Fela Anikulapo Kuti was not a simple man. There were huge complexities that composed his personality and Fela! does not shy away from them.

His music is a central thread in this emotional and worldwide journey. He was a man with 27 wives who fought against oppression; he lived in a country ruled by terror and he prospered; and although a world traveler, he held dear to many of his tribal customs. He caused trouble, smoked pot and displayed an immense ego.

FELA! is a theatrical event that is part concert, part celebration, part nightmare and part party. It’s beat is ongoing and multifaceted and much of the story is told through a blending of bold narrative, wildly uncompromising dance and amazingly complex music.

magazines. When she asks her father if she can get a real book, he negates her request. With that she finds her way to the library, reads all of the children’s books quickly and then starts reading the books for adults.

Matilda, who fights against her parents in many ways, is eventually sent away to school where the she is treated with cruelty by the headmistress but befriended by one teacher, Miss Honey. While at school, it’s found that she has telekinetic powers. Although she is also treated poorly at school, through a series of adventures and with the help of Miss Honey, Matilda breaks free from those who are harmful to her and finds a new life where she can at last be happy.

Her Journey

Matilda’s journey is difficult, fantastical and ultimately uplifting. Surrounded by those who are self-centered and unscrupulous, the gifted, ebullient and savvy child is able to enlist the help of a

similar soul, Miss Honey, who has also been treated terribly by family members and others.

Matilda is a girl who not only finds hope, but also gives hope to others. Her story is singularly unique and special and offers a wonderful adventure for children and adults.

"One Man, Two Guvnors discount tickets from All Tickets
The hilarious comic performance by James Corden in One Man, Two Guvnors received a Tony

There’s great news about the Tony winners—you can see the work of every one of them as those who won are still running on The Great White Way. All Tickets Inc., which offers groups THE TOTAL NEW YORK EXPERIENCE, has group discounts for these great shows. And by the way, a lot of extremely fine shows were nominated and did not win and there are also excellent performances and shows that were not recognized at all.

Once The Big Winner

The musical Once, which is based on the indie film of the same title, took home eight Tonys, including Best Lead Actor in a Musical (Steve Kazee), Best Musical, Best Book for a Musical and Best Direction (John Tiffany). Once, which we profiled in an earlier Tony blog, has passion, romance and love; it’s a genuine piece that’s defined by fine performances and story that is expertly told. Be sure to see it.

Death of a Salesman Wins Again

In our last blog, we highlighted Death of a Salesman just after it nailed

"Group discounts for Death of a Salesman at All Tickets
Death of a Salesman won for Best Play Revival and Direction.

down the Tonys this year for Best Revival of a Play and Best Director of a Play (Mike Nichols). The cast is exceptional and the play, which is now 63 years old, is still moving, mesmerizing and powerful. Death of a Salesman is the only show to win four Tonys as the best—one when it premiered and now for three revivals. It’s a classic through and through.

Clybourne Park Takes Home the Tony

Bruce Norris’ Pulitzer Prize winning satire Clybourne Park won for Best Play. This is an insightful, entertaining show about race relations. The cast is excellent and director Pam MacKinnon, who was nominated, has orchestrated the evening in an exceptional manner, making this play flow with ease.

Great Performances

There were some surprises in this category as newcomer James Corden won the Best Actor award for his brilliant comedic performance in the British import One Man, Two Guvnors. This is a hilarious show as Corden’s character tries to sustain a virtual balancing act between two crooks and a range of growing complications and obstacles. See him!

Venus in Fur’s Nina Arianda earned the award for Best Lead Actress in a Play. Arianda offers an alluring and hypnotic performance in this very seductive show. The two-character play, written by David Ives, is clever with power constantly shifting between the two characters.

"Porgy and Bess discounts from All Tickets"
McDonald and Lewis were both nominated for Porgy and Bess. McDonald won her fifth Tony.

As already noted, Kazee won for best lead in a musical, while Audra MacDonald did it again, winning her fifth Tony. This time it was for Bess in The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. McDonald is a charismatic performer who seems able to play just about anything. The show also won for Best Musical Revival.

Peter and the Starcatcher

The high energy, beautifully designed and directed Peter and the Starcatcher, which earned nine nominations, won five awards, including Christian Borie as Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play. This show, which includes a Tony-nominated score, is great for older kids and adults. If you don’t know, it’s the story of how Peter Pan grew up to never grow up. See our earlier blog on Peter and the Starcatcher.

Other Winners

There were a host of other winners last night, including Judith Light for her featured performance in Other Desert Cities and Michael McGrath and Judy Kaye for their featured roles in the musical Nice Work if You Can Get It. Newsies won for Best Original Score and also for orchestrations.

Tony Winners Galore and More

It’s a good sign that the competition was tough in that no one musical or play swept the night. Once dominated in some ways, but others managed to capture their share of the night’s trophies.

"Discount tickets for Chaplin from All Tickets"
Chaplin The Musical will be on Broadway in August

Best Play

Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris
Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is the best.

Nina Arianda in Venus in Fur
Tracie Bennett in End of the Rainbow
Stockard Channing in Other Desert Cities
Linda Lavin in The Lyons
Cynthia Nixon in Wit

This is yet another extremely difficult decision. Stockard Channing in Other Desert Cities is my pick.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical

Danny Burstein in Follies
Jeremy Jordan in Newsies
Steve Kazee in Once
Norm Lewis in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess

Prince of Broadway Postponed
Harold Prince is responsible for for over 100,000 Broadway performances.

All Tickets Inc. has learned that Prince of Broadway, the musical about the celebrated director/producer Harold Prince, has changed its production schedule. Instead of premiering this fall, the new musical is now scheduled for the early part of the 2013-2014 theatre season. A new production team is on-board as Steven Baruch, Marc Routh, Richard Frankel and Thomas Viertel are now offering the show.

Producer’s Statement

Speaking as a representative of the producing group, Steven Baruch said, “We are honored, thrilled and excited to be producing Prince of Broadway. Hal Prince has the most important legacy in the American theatre and he continues to create great work for the stage.” He added, “Hal and his creative team have completed an extraordinary new musical, which we want to give the best possible Broadway production.”

"Rebecca the musical bound for Broadway group tickets from All Tickets"
The mystical Rebecca will be on Broadway this fall.

Concerning the change of date, Baruch noted, “After reviewing everything ranging from the schedules of the creative team, theatre availability, advance group sales needs, among many other elements, we have determined that the optimum time for the show to open on Broadway would be the Fall of 2013.”

The Creative Team

Harold Prince, who has won a record-breaking 21 Tonys, will co-direct the show with Tony winner Susan Stroman. Tony Award nominee David Thompson (The Scottsboro Boys) is the book writer and music and lyrics will come from the many successful shows with which Prince has been associated.

In the past 60 years, Prince has put his mark on some of the biggest and most successful shows that Broadway has ever seen. Some of his hits include The Pajama Game, West Side Story, Fiorello!, Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd and Evita. He directed and produced the longest running show to ever appear on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera, which is still running after 10,000 performances.

Anna Maria Alberghetti won a Tony for her performance in Carnival. She sang the show’s anthem “Love Makes the World Go ‘Round.”

Molly and Sam deeply love one another in Ghost The Musical[/caption]It’s a four-letter word, extremely powerful with deep meaning and often said in public in official ceremonies. “Love,” as Lili sings in Carnival, “makes the world go ‘round” and it’s also an important ingredient in many Broadway musicals. One thing is for certain when it comes to love in musicals on Broadway or in real life, it ain’t easy. Another thing that’s certain is if you’re interested in acquiring group discount tickets for any Broadway show that focuses on love, All Tickets Inc. can get the job done at a price that you’ll LOVE. (Yes, that IS the theme of this blog.)

Three Little Words

Ghost The Musical is a supernatural love story focusing on the young couple Sam and Molly. Sam cannot say those three little words (“I Love You”) to Molly, and instead when she says, “I love you” to him, he replies with “Ditto.” That leads to the duet the couple sings entitled “Three Little Words.” Sam is killed by an mugger not long after that moment.

Molly and Sam deeply love one another in Ghost The Musical

Ghost is a grand musical that turns on a grand theme and scheme that many of us have considered after we have lost someone. That is, “I wish I could see that person one more time.” Sam’s love for Molly is so great that he undertakes that journey, eventually traveling from the spiritual to the material world to save her life and to finally tell her that he does indeed “love” her. The moment is touching and there’s not a dry eye in the house during those last minutes of Ghost The Musical as the two are reunited for one last time. To hear what Richard Fleeshman (Sam) and Caissie Levy (Molly) say about the love their character’s share go to this exclusive All Tickets Inc. video clip.

Prepare Ye

The show that made composer Stephen Schwartz famous, Godspell, came back to Broadway this past fall and it is still running strong. The musical focuses on the teachings of Jesus as related in the Gospel of Matthew and Gospel of Luke and is told via the dramatization of parables through music, lyrics, dance and dialogue.

"Godspell All Tickets group discounts"
The cast of Godspell offers audiences a lot of energy and love.

There’s a major emphasis on loving your neighbor and treating others with dignity and respect in this uplifting, high-energy production of Godspell. “Day by Day,” which was a huge pop hit in the early 70s, offers a very clear and sincere message when it comes to one’s relationship to Jesus as the character sings of and to him:

Three things I pray
To see thee more clearly
Love thee more dearly
Follow thee more nearly
Day by day

It is, in essence, the anthem of this musical, which makes love the central theme in Godspell.

Love Never Dies

The longest running show in Broadway history, The Phantom of the Opera, has a sequel entitled Love Never Dies and it is on its way to Broadway. Phantom is an

extremely passionate love story about a disfigured opera composer who haunts the undercarriage of an opera house and becomes obsessed with the young, beautiful singer Christine Daaé. The story and music have transfixed audiences on Broadway since it opened January 9, 1988, recording over 10,000 performances and still running today.

Love Never Dies continues the theme of obsession as Christine Daaé and her husband and young son travel to the US so she can make a special appearance on Coney Island at an innovative performance venue. The impresario that has enticed her to the US, whose identity is a secret, is that same Phantom who plagued her back in France. His deep longing and love for her has not died and the powerful story of Christine and the Phantom continues and unfolds in new and interesting ways in Love Never Dies.

New, Revival, Sequel = Love

Profiled above are just three Broadway musicals that focus on love. There are many other great shows that deal with this universal human emotion. The Magic of Peter Pan

Peter Pan has been around for some time. He was the creation of Scottish playwright and novelist J.M. Barrie. Barrie

"J.M Barrie and Peter Pan"
Peter Pan was J.M. Barrie’s most popular creation

had success before he introduced Peter Pan but he has no greater success than that he garnered from, as he called him, “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.”

Peter first made his appearance in a few chapters of Barrie’s novel entitled The Little White Bird. That was in 1902. The Little White Bird was not a children’s book; it was written for adults. The novelist then took the character of Peter Pan and created a play for him. That was entitled Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. It premiered in 1904 and was a big hit.

In 1906, Barrie’s publishers took the chapters from The Little White Bird in which Peter appears, those were 13 through 18, and republished them under the title Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. They added illustrations by Arthur Rackham After that, in 1911, Barrie published a novel focusing on Peter. It was called Peter and Wendy.

Peter Pan proved to be hugely popular. So much so that the play was turned into a very popular musical that is still entertaining kids and adults today.

Peter Pan The Musical

In 1954, the musical version of Peter Panpremiered with Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook. Both Martin and Ritchard won Tonys.

"Mary Martin Peter Pan"
Martin Martin takes flight with director Jerome Robbins

The book was by Barrie, the music by Jule Styne and Mark Charlap and lyrics by Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Carolyn Leigh. Mary Martin was long associated with the role, which she recreated in a television special. Since that time both Sandy Duncan and Cathy Rigby have been popular Peter Pans. In fact, Rigby, at the age of 59, is still playing the part.

The Starcatcher

This version of the Peter story is adapted from the best selling novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Peter and the Starcatcher is a rollicking evening in the theatre

that is staged with great energy and a small but enthusiastic troupe that tells the story of how an orphan boy became Peter Pan. Unlike its predecessor starring Mary Martin, this is not a musical. But it is high-energy entertainment that includes some pathos and insight. Book now for a topnotch, inventive and highly creative Broadway experience.
