Those who see The Marvelous Wonderettes at Theatre Row’s Kirk Theatre are in for a hot time. The fact is Marvelous Wonderettes groups enjoy a major “Heat Wave” that warms the deepest winter chill and calms the most powerful north wind. This show has a host of up tempo numbers all of which climbed the charts in the 1950s and 1960s. The first act of the musical comedy is set in 1958 at the senior prom of Springfield High where the girl-group, The Marvelous Wonderettes, has been asked to entertain.

Suzy, Missy, Cindy Lou, and Betty Jean are adorned in crinoline and ready to sing their hearts out. Act two sees the four ladies return to Springfield High to entertain the class in 1968, during their 10-year reunion. In each act, we learn about their lives, dreams, hopes, and relationships as they weave a melodic and harmonious chain of songs that sometimes unites and at other times divides them.

Upbeat Numbers Drive the Show

It’s true that there are ballads and other songs that are more contemplative in tempo in this musical, including “Leader of the Pack,” Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight,” and “You Don’t Own Me,” but there are plenty of upbeat tunes. These songs drive the energy of this musical. Included are the hits “Lollipop,” “It’s in His Kiss,” and the exceptionally energetic “Heat Wave.”

“Heat Wave,” which was released as a 45-rpm single on July 9, 1963, on the Gordy label, a subsidiary of Motown, hit number one on the Billboard Hot R&B chart. It stayed there for a month. It also hit number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The group that made the song a hit was Martha and the Vandellas.

Act Two Curtain Raiser

When you start the second act of a musical you usually want to do so with a bang. The Marvelous Wonderettes certainly does that by beginning the act two with “Heat Wave.” It’s a very hot rendition of the tune that first involves Missy, Cindy Lou, and Betty Jean. Finally, at one point in the number, they are joined by a very pregnant Suzy. It’s a massively energetic opening to the second act that then offers a reprise of the harmonious “Mr. Sandman.”

One of the more than two-dozen top 40 songs in The Marvelous Wonderettes is Aretha Franklin’s mega-hit “RESPECT.” Those who take advantage of the low prices for Marvelous Wonderettes group tickets find themselves caught up in this exciting rendition of Franklin’s anthem. The song, which features a driving beat, is all about a woman demanding a “little respect” from her man.

Franklin’s Hit

Franklin’s “RESPECT” charted at number one in the US in 1967. It was number two in Canada, number 10 in England and number 11 in Australia.

The song begins with a demand for “just a little bit” of “respect. But as it progresses to the end, the singer gets more and more demanding. Finally, at the end, she comes to the conclusion that if she doesn’t get what she wants, then the singer will pick up and leave. As it says:

“I get tired (just a little bit)
Keep on tryin’ (just a little bit)
You’re runnin’ out of fools (just a little bit)
And I ain’t lyin’ (just a little bit)
(Re, re, re, re) when you come home
(Re, re, re ,re) ‘spect
Or you might walk in (respect, just a little bit)
And find out I’m gone (just a little bit)
I got to have (just a little bit)
A little respect (just a little bit)”

Marvelous Wonderettes Brings It Home

At the end of The Marvelous Wonderettes, a very pregnant Suzy takes the stage. She extremely emotional, as she worried about her relationship with Ritchie and ultra-self-conscious about being pregnant. She sings a tearful rendition of “Maybe I Know.” Missy, in an attempt to bolster Suzy, sings “Needle in a Haystack.” Suzy begins singing “Rescue Me,” but ultimately finds strength when Missy, Cindy Lou, and Betty Jean sing “RESPECT.”

The show ends happily with Ritchie, who’s running the light board for the shows, signals his love for Suzy by blinking the lights. Also at the end, Cindy Lou and Betty Jean mend their friendship and it looks like Missy is going to marry Mr. Lee. Through the no nonsense pop song “RESPECT,” the woman find their way to a happy, musical comedy ending.

Harmony and “Sugartime”

“Sugartime” is one of the first songs sung in The Marvelous Wonderettes. The musical comedy opens with two songs made famous by the Chordettes, “Mr. Sandman” and “Lollipop” and then it goes into “Sugartime.” This trio of hits gets The Marvelous Wonderettes off to a fast, positive start, as each is an upbeat pop song about love featuring wonderful harmonies.

The fourth number, “Wedding Bell Blues,” changes the mood and dynamic of the musical for a bit, but not until the optimistic, feel-good energy of this hit musical comedy is well established. Along with the wonderful energy produced by the tempos and lyrics of the three opening numbers, which is topped off by “Sugartime,” there are the amazing harmonies that define this type of music. Those harmonies also tell us something about the four Marvelous Wonderettes and their enduring friendships, which may run into rocky times, but never to the point of destroying the bonds that unite the four women.

How Popular Was “Leader of the Pack?”

“Leader of the Pack,” which was released in September 1964, was number one on the Billboard Hot 100, number one on New Zealand’s Lever Hit Parades, number three on Canada Top Singles, and number 11 on UK Singles. It topped the charts in 1965. It was The Shangri-Las biggest hit and the one record for which they are best known. The B side of the 45 was “What Is Love.”

The Shangri-Las singing “Leader of the Pack” in 1964, and then The Shangri-Las’ lead singer Mary Weiss performing it many years later at The House of Blues.

marv4In The Marvelous Wonderettes, “Leader of the Pack” is sung in Act Two during the 10-year reunion of Springfield High’s 1958 class. It’s Cindy Lou who sings “Leader of the Pack” partly as a commentary on Springfield High School bad boy Billy Ray Patton, who’s suspension resulted in his group being cut as prom entertainment 10 years earlier (Act One) and allowed The Marvelous Wonderettes to snag the gig. Cindy Lou, who had Hollywood aspirations that did not work out after she graduated from high school, is back in Springfield and in love with Billy Ray. In a way, the version sung in The Marvelous Wonderettes is done as a torch song.

wonderettesThe Marvelous Wonderettes group tickets provide audiences the chance to have a shared experience that is filled with great performances, hit music, and hilarious comedy. There are also very touching and heartfelt moments, engaging interactions with the audience, and an overall uplifting and positive energy that defines the evening’s entertainment. This is the type of show that audiences of all ages love, families can enjoy together, and all groups find to be an entertaining journey from those 1950s teen years to 1960s adulthood.

The Hits Are Here!

When you purchase your Marvelous Wonderettes group tickets you’ll have a gateway to hearing beautiful, polished, and exciting renditions of some of the biggest hits of the 50s and 60s. Like the presently running Beautiful and former long-running Mama Mia!, both Broadway shows, the Off-Broadway hit The Marvelous Wonderettes is a top 40 hit-machine. The major difference being that with Marvelous Wonderettes group tickets you’ll have the chance to hear melodies and lyrics written by a range of amazing pop composers and writers and not a few writers or those recorded by one group.

You’ll hear songs like “Heat Wave” written by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier and first recorded and made a hit by Martha and the Vandellas in 1963, and then covered and once again made a hit in 1975 by Linda Ronstadt, and recorded by Phil Collins in 2010 and “Wedding Bell Blues” written by Laura Nyro and and made a major hit by the 5th Dimension in 1969.

Then there’s what is perhaps the best known of all teen tragedy songs, “Leader of the Pack,” written by George “Shadow” Morton, Jeff Barry, and Ellie Greenwich. It jumped to number one on the pop charts in 1964 when The Shangri-Las recorded it. It was their biggest hit. See below a live television version sung by the American girl group The Shangri-Las and featuring singer Robert Goulete mugging on a motorcycle. The clip is from the popular quiz show I’ve Got a Secret.

The Marvelous Wonderettes offers over 30 pop hits, all beautifully performed, some soulfully, others comically, that you will simply enjoy.

Character and Situation Comedy

The Marvelous Wonderettes includes plenty of character and situation comedy, as we get to know each of the unique young ladies who make up the group, Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy. Each one has her dreams, which include everything from being named prom queen to one of the girls stealing another’s song to marriage.

As an example, how did they get to perform at the senior prom? Suzy and Missy explain to the promgoers, that is those in the audience including those in your group, how the boy’s glee club was supposed to perform, but Billy Ray Patton, their lead singer, was suspended from school for smoking. As they note, “Tobacco can kill, and make you ill.” Thus, the school principal, Mr. Lee, asked The Marvelous Wonderettes to perform instead. The girls then announce that the theme of the prom is “Marvelous Dreams,” and with that, they segue seamlessly into a medley of “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “Dream Lover.”

Audiences find The Marvelous Wonderettes offers a great evening of theatre, as the show is upbeat, funny, and completely entertaining. Parties who participate in The Marvelous Wonderettes group discount tickets program enhance their experience by being able to share the experience of this show before, during, and after the performance. This musical is perfect for groups looking for a positive, feel-good show that offers insights into who we were in the 1950s, and how we changed in the 1960s.

Innocence- 1950s vs. 1960smarv2

Part of the reason The Marvelous Wonderettes group discount tickets program is popular with audiences of all ages is that the musical has a sense of innocence, mirroring a feeling that seemed to pervade the 1950s, which is when the first act is set. (For more on this musical’s sense of innocence, read our previous blog!) That seems to have been a simpler period, and for many audience members, it’s a nostalgic time. The four characters who make up the Wonderettes, Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy, embody the simplicity of the time.

Act two, which takes place in 1968 during the 10-year Springfield High School reunion, is also defined by innocence, but it’s a different kind of innocence. The four ladies who are The Marvelous Wonderettes have gone through many changes since they were in high school, and so too has the U.S. These changes are reflected in the stories of the four women’s lives, their relationships on and off stage, and the music that they sing. This period, although seen by many as being more complicated, is also filled with nostalgia.

lesleygoreLesley Gore – It’s My Party

Singer Lesley Gore, who has three of her songs featured in the second act of the musical “Maybe I know,” “It’s My Party,” and “You Don’t Own Me”), may very well define this new innocence. It’s one in which many female singers end up telling it like it is. They define the realities and difficulties of being in love and decide how they will make their stand. The women are saying they are strong enough to weather the emotional storm in which they find themselves, or they’re contemplating independence, or they’re devoted to becoming independent. Where these songs are concerned, the innocence isn’t about the simplicity of life, but rather, that the simple solutions offered in the lyrics will be easy to achieve.

“Maybe I Know” is a song in which the singer knows the man she loves is cheating on her, but she believes that “deep down” he loves her and she hopes that one day he will “settle down.” It’s a simple solution to a complex problem. In “It’s My Party,” the singer, who’s in the midst of her birthday party, is in love with Johnny, and he’s supposed to be in love with her, but he’s managed to disappear from the party and Judy, whose hand he was holding, is gone too. At the end of the song, they come back to the party and are engaged. This is a tune about being completely open with your emotions.

“You Don’t Own Me” features a very strong character, as the singer proclaims to the man she is seeing that she knows she’s just one of his “many toys,” and that means that she will be who she wants to be and do what she wants to do. In other words, he’s one of her toys too. Of the three Gore numbers in The Marvelous Wonderettes, this offers a vision of a woman who’s decided that she gets to play by the same rules to which men have access.

Feel-Good Future

If groups find The Marvelous Wonderettes offers great party feelings, what sort of feelings are they exactly? About what type of party are we talking? What do those who participate in The Marvelous Wonderettes group discount tickets program get from this musical? Unlike the party in “It’s My Party,” the celebration offered by The Marvelous Wonderettes is optimistic and includes, ultimately, a happy ending. By the end of the musical, the four characters still have their challenges, but they are also ready to take them on and move forward.

wonderettes1950’s musical innocence defines The Marvelous Wonderettes, and that very innocence is something that audiences find very attractive. The first act of the show takes place in 1958, a time when American Bandstand offered wholesome entertainment, Pat Boone was a teen idol, and girl’s skirts still went down to the knee. The four young ladies who are The Marvelous Wonderettes, Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy, represent that period.

The second act, which is set in 1968, a time of turbulence in the U.S., still embraces musical innocence, but in a different way, as many of the songs in that act are more about teens, specifically women, setting new rules and following their dreams. Still, all-in-all, musical innocence defines The Marvelous Wonderettes, making it fun, endearing, and eminently enjoyable by a large cross-section of audiences.

Dick Clark’s Saturday Night Beechnut Show

One show that certainly defined the late 50s was Dick Clark’s Saturday Night Beechnut Show, which ran from February 15, 1958 to September 10, 1960. Sponsored by Beechnut Gum, the popular variety show was aired Saturdays from 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Clark’s show featured chart-climbing musical performers, interviews with celebrities such as Bob Hope, Tony Randall, and Johnny Carson, and a countdown from the number 10 down to the number one songs on that week’s top 40.dick clark

Clark did 136 shows, all of which were broadcast live. Of the 136 shows. 131 were broadcast from Manhattan’s Little Theater located at 240 West 44th Street, NYC. (It is now the Helen Hayes Theatre.) The other five shows were broadcast from various parts of the U.S. from June 11, 1960 to July 9, 1960.

The Chordettes

As musical innocence defines The Marvelous Wonderettes, it also defined Clark’s show. One of the prime examples would be the appearance of The Chordettes, who on February 22, 1958 sang two of their hits, “Lollipop” and “Mr. Sandman.” Both of these songs can be found in the first act of The Marvelous Wonderettes

The Chordettes singing “Lollipop” and “Mr. Sandman” on Dick Clark’s Saturday Night Beechnut Show

Act II and The Marvelous Wonderettes

Although the second act of The Marvelous Wonderettes includes a reprise of “Mr. Sandman,” the majority of the songs focus on themes that are less innocent, such as rebellion (“Leader of the Pack”), cheating (“Maybe I Know”), equality (“RESPECT”), and female independence (“You Don’t Own Me”). Although 1950’s musical innocence defines The Marvelous Wonderettes in its initial act, there’s a different type of musical innocence in act two. Our next blog considers that new type of innocence and how so many of the songs by Lesley Gore, featured in The Marvelous Wonderettes, contain this new energy.

meanOne of the most quotable movies of the millennial generation is going to be premiering on Broadway in 2018. From questioning butter as a carbohydrate to wearing pink on Wednesdays, this is an entertainment phenomenon that has connected fans for over a decade. With a book by Tina Fey and music by her spouse, Jeff Richmond, the world will soon be subscribing to the plastics and their perfect, little, preppy world live onstage. Mean Girls will begin preview performances at the August Wilson Theatre on March 12th of 2018. Before that, it will be housed by the National Theatre in Washington D.C.

There’s a Thirty Percent Chance It’s Already Raining…

Mean Girls was a film from 2004 that starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Tina Fey herself! The film was based on a book called Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Fey took the book that was all about women and the cliques they subscribe to in school and added her own twist of humor. The film centered around Lohan’s character, Cady Heron, a smart, beautiful young girl who had just switched to a public high school after living her whole life in South Africa. Unfamiliar with the hierarchy of her new school she makes friends with the art geeks, Damien and Janis. After Cady has a run in with the popular girls in school Janis decides to take revenge on the Plastics leader, Regina George, by having Cady pose as a popular girl who secretly wants to ruin Regina’s life.

Someone Should Totally Just Stab Caesar

The question going forward is about whether this musical production can make Mean Girls fans think the live production is just as “fetch” as the original. The characters have to be extremely hateable, likeable, and quotable at the same time. The marketing team for the show just put out a little teaser on Monday, September 11th. View the video below to see what the Plastics have to say about the musical:

Cher is a style icon, music mogul, and LGBTQ activist whose career has brought forth so many memorable songs and performances. Starting in June of 2018, it seems that she will be working with Broadway creatives to “Turn Back Time” on her career with a five week musical engagement in Chicago. The Cher Show is going through a month long lab now in NYC with Jersey Boys librettist, Rick Elice, Avenue Q director, Jason Moore, choreography by Newsies’ Christopher Gattelli, and production by Hamilton’s Jeffrey Seller.

Babe, Lady, and Star

The casting breakdowns for the production revealed the most to curious fans about the production plot. Three women will play Cher at three different points in her life. The first, Babe, will represent Cher as a young woman: Independent, insecure, and in love with Sonny Bono. Lady will represent Cher in the middle section of her life where she becomes famous and starts to transition to that next part of her star studded life. Star is the final version of Cher who has aged into her successes but still sees failures and hardships.

Could It Be Better Timing?

Because of this eruption of LGBTQ pop culture within the current decade, this could be the perfect time for a Cher musical. Audiences who love Cher also tend to watch television like RuPaul’s Drag Racewhere her son Chaz is a frequent judge and strong advocate for LGBTQ rights. Besides this, Will and Grace is back on television and making national commentary on sexuality like it used to. Sean Hayes’ character on the show loves Cher and even meets her in a past season:

My guess is that there is a specific market for people who would want to go to a Cher musical. The question is if the musical draws them in enough with a good production to get them saying, “Yaass, Cher! I Got You, Babe!

comefromawayThis month, a new Broadway show will be opening at the Gerald Shoenfeld Theatre. It is a production that has seen a lot of stage time since 2015 on the West Coast and whose subject matter is a little touchy. It is the first musical the world has seen that is based on the events of 9/11. Its name, Come From Away, refers to its setting in Newfoundland, Canada where 38 planes holding almost 7,000 people were forced to land after the U.S. government shutdown the U.S. airspace. The musical, which is walking on marketing eggshells, could be the musical of the year.

Deterring From 9/11 Terminology

I decided to write about this new production after I watched the above NY1 interview with musical ensemble member, Joel Hatch. Prior to watching the interview, I had seen multiple marketing videos of music and audience quotes, none of which really touched on the fact that 9/11 is the musical’s central event. Hatch addressed the anxiety of the NY1 journalists about seeing a production around an event that is still pretty taboo in our society. He said that this musical is largely about how the entire world was affected by 9/11.

The show stars 12 actors who take on many roles to tell real stories of people who were stranded in Newfoundland after 9/11. The actors play Newfoundland residents as well as the “come from aways” (non-native visitors) to enact relationships that came out of the 5-day stay on the island. The music of the show is celtic-folk and represents the Irish immigrants who settled in Newfoundland in the early 1900s. It has eight band members who are also a big part of the story.

The Drawcomefromaway2

Though the marketing spends much more time dwelling on the show’s characters than the fact that it is a 9/11 musical, that is the draw to the show. Just wondering what political commentary will be made in the production, and wondering if it is a good telling could be enough to drive ticket sales. Also, its musical sound is current with the Broadway trend in folk music like that of Bright Star, Once, and The Bridges of Madison County.

bronx1After a successful run of A Bronx Tale at the Paper Mill Playhouse, this production co-directed by Jerry Zaks and Robert De Niro, will be transferring to Broadway for previews in November. Besides the directing duo, this show brought composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid”) and lyricist Glenn Slater (“School of Rock”).

The Plot

The musical is about a young boy living in the Bronx named Calogero who becomes friends with Sonny, a man who runs the neighborhood as a mob figure. Calogero stands up for Sonny at times when his parents would disagree with his loyalty. The boy becomes more and more involved with Sonny’s world as the show progresses, and he must ultimately choose whether to stay with his mob family or his biological family’s wishes. Joshua Colley (Flounder in “The Little Mermaid”, Hollywood Bowl) played young Calogero in the Paper Mill production. Watching videos of Colley’s performance is a jaw-dropping experience. That part will be played by Bobby Conte Thornton.

The Criticsbronx

The New York Times reviewed the production of A Bronx Tale on February 24th: “Chazz Palminteri’s “A Bronx Tale,” originally a solo show, later a movie, and after that a solo show once again on Broadway, has proved to be comfortably malleable material. Now it has been given a hefty infusion of music and dance and — presto! — the familiar-as-red-sauce story, with most of its rough edges intact, can be found finger-snapping and doo-wopping its way across the stage of the Paper Mill Playhouse here…” (NYT).

The Times found the creative team and cast to be a talent-filled musical revue but not altogether new and exciting. In comparison to some of the other productions of last season the show was predictable: “Slickness and skill certainly aren’t all we want in a new musical. In the post-’Hamilton’ era now upon us, ‘A Bronx Tale’ feels conventional: a sentimental tale of a man’s moral awakening combined with ear-friendly music” (NYT).

If you’re looking to see this production in a large group, watch our website for group prices as previews approach. Opening night is set for December 1st at the Longacre Theatre.

New Pasek an Paul Musical!
New Pasek and Paul Musical!

From the talented minds who brought the world Edges, Dogfight, and James and the Giant Peach comes a new musical called Dear Evan Hansen. The musical, originally set to premiere on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre, has now been switched over to the Music Box Theatre with the same production dates. The show is about a teenager whose life is changed when the school bully commits suicide. The production won an Obie for its ambitious commentary on social anxiety and identity.

#YouWillBeFound

The production is being directed by Michael Greif who is a three-time Tony nominee for Rent, If/Then, and Next to Normal . Their director is used to creating art with musicals of hard-hitting material. With the incredible creative talent of Pasek and Paul, this production should be no exception.

Besides the Obie Award, the production has also received the Helen Hayes Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award. It has received many positive reviews already from its 2015 run at the Arena Stage, and its Off-Broadway run at Second Stages. The Washington Post said some great things about the production including this quote from the Dear Evan Hansen website:

“A heart-piercing trip to the place that musical theater can sometimes take us to.”

A Story of Realness

Dear Evan Hansen will start B'Way previews on Nov 14th!
Dear Evan Hansen will start B’Way previews on Nov 14th!

The plot of this musical is based on a real-life death in Benj Pasek’s grammar school past. Amidst the fights for transgendered individuals as well as the support for the 2016 democratic presidential candidate by the AEA, this production comes at a controversial time in our history. To see if this show makes an impact on audiences that I think it will, you should get your tickets soon for the previews starting on November 14th!

One of the funniest musical, romantic comedies is returning to the stage this month! She Loves Me has been running previews since February 19th and will officially open on Saint Patrick’s Day! The show stars Laura Benanti as Amalia, Zachary Levi as Georg, Jane Krakowski as Ilona, and Gavin Creel as Kodaly. This talented and hilarious group of characters is sure to make a production worth seeing.

The Original Knee-Slapper

She Loves Me was originally written in 1963 by Joe Masteroff (Book), Sheldon Harnick (Lyrics), and Jerry Brock (Music). Georg is a shy manager in Budapest at Maraczek’s Parfumerie who receives love letters from an admirer. Amalia gets a job at the Parfumerie and quickly becomes Georg’s least favorite person to work with. However, they both seem to have romantic pen pals sending them letters… Barbara Cook, Daniel Massey, Barbara Baxley, and Jack Cassidy were among the original cast of this show in ‘63. Like the Tom Hanks/ Meg Ryan romantic comedy, You’ve Got Mail, this storyline has influenced many other spin-offs. This particular telling of confused love is filled with vitality and plot twists!

Hilarity Even Before Opening Night

The Broadway Channel recently shared a clip from a night of interviews and performances by the cast of She Loves Me. Jane Krakowski performed bits of music from the show in her type-cast guise as a sexy thirty something, Gavin Creel showed off his charm as a ladies’ man, while Laura Benanti and Zachary Levi goofed around as themselves in front of the cameras. If these clips are an insight into the iceberg that is She Loves Me, Broadway is in for an amazing revival!

We wish the cast of She Loves Me an incredible opening night this month! Hopefully, the luck of the Irish is behind them for opening on March 17th! Follow us here at All Tickets Inc. for more info on your favorite revivals, new box office hits, and discounts on group tickets!

Musicals s about music or that focus in some way on musical performance often seem to be naturals for Broadway. They run the gamut of subject matter and include long running hits as diverse as The Phantom of the Opera and Jersey Boys. Classic Broadway hits that focus on music or musical performance in some manner include Show Boat, A Chorus Line, and The Music Man.

The 2015-2016 Broadway season offers three such musicals. Two, On Your Feet and School of Rock – The Musical, are new, and one, Dames at Sea, was the Off-Broadway hit that brought Bernadette Peters into the limelight four decades ago. Each show promises to give audiences something unique.

School of Rock

Rock on with School of Rock!
Rock on with School of Rock!

The 2003 hit movie that starred Jack Black comes to Broadway. Slated to preview on November 2, 2015 and to open December 6, School of Rock features additional music and lyrics by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Glenn Slater and a book by Julian Fellowes. Laurence Connor will direct and JoAnn M. Hunter will choreograph.

This is a dynamite team bringing the tale of Dewey Finn to The Great White Way. Finn has been banished from his band No Vacancy. He disguises himself as a substitute teacher and gets work as an instructor at a topnotch prep school.

Finn, who wants to be a rock star, forms a band with the talent he finds at the school. His short-term goal is to win the Battle of the Bands so he can use the prize money to get himself back on his feet. Over the course of his journey, he learns some very important life lessons.

This is a musical comedy of hot guitar riffs, pounding drum rhythms, and pulsating tempos.

On Your Feet

feet48The musical On Your Feet, which previews October 5, 2015 and opens November 5, is the story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan and the Latino experience in America. There’s a lot of excitement about this show that includes many of Estefan’s most popular songs, such as “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, “1-2-3,” “Mi Tierra,” and “Conga.”

The book is by Alexander Dinelaris and music and lyrics by Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Jerry Mitchell directs and Sergio Trujillo choreographs. Both are Broadway veterans. On Your Feet is an inspiring show.

Dames at Sea

Dames at Sea is pure fun.
Dames at Sea is pure fun.

If you love silliness, great choreography, and wonderful music then Dames at Sea is your cup of tea. Directed and choreographed by Randy Skinner (White Christmas and 42nd Street) Dames at Sea is the story of a young, naive girl from Utah who gets off the bus in Manhattan and finds herself in the chorus of a Broadway show.

Along the way she falls in love, has a major run-in with the shows star, gets to be the star of the show, and wins instant Broadway acclaim while performing on a battleship. (The theatre the show was to be in was demolished.)

Dames at Sea offers fast-paced fun, stirring dance numbers, and a wonderful collection of cmic characters. It is a great family musical.

Becoming a Hit

What's it like to be hit?
What’s it like to be hit?

One thing that unites each of these very different musicals is that they are all focused on what it is to be a success as a performer. School of Rock offers us a glimpse of the individual focused on his goals and attaining them while learning important lessons about friendship and fairness. On Your Feet gives us the American dream and says that in the USA individuals with talent, dedication, and high standards can work hard and overcome huge obstacles. Dames at Sea is the prototypical tale of the small town girl who makes good in the big time, giving us a boatload of laughs and a whole lot of innocent spirit.

These are wonderful shows for groups. For more information, group comps, and low group rates, contact All Tickets Inc. at 1-800-922-0716.

Hamilton uses non-traditional casting creatively.
Hamilton uses non-traditional casting creatively.

Hamilton and Amazing Grace, two new Broadway musicals, are about very different subjects, but both offer not only great entertainment value, but also food for thought when it comes to race in America. Certainly, the various recent incidents involving the questionable and sometimes illegal use of police force on blacks, enlightening and accusatory justice department findings, and the mass murder of men and women at a black church in Charleston, S.C. by a white supremacist have charged the emotions of lawmakers, citizens, and the President of the United States.

Race, and specifically slavery and those who were enslaved, is something with which the United States has never totally come to terms. Perhaps that’s because the more than 100-year cultural norm of slavery and the mentality that allowed it to happen and prosper is not something that you can deal with in a relatively short historical period. This may be especially true in a nation as diverse of ours, which has 50 states, each with a certain amount of independence and personal identity and yet each a part of a “united” country.

Hamilton and Race

Questions are plentiful.
Questions are plentiful.

Hamilton, which offers audiences a racially mixed and predominantly minority cast playing mainly white historical figures, actively challenges our ideas of race, putting in the forefront, through its casting and other artistic decisions, the question as to whether or not race is a cultural and societal construct and not a simple reality.

Set to hip-hop and R&B styles, this historical musical about Alexander Hamilton is entirely sung. The lyrics are powerfully potent on many levels, and the characters are strongly drawn and very real. Historically, Hamilton, a man who was a born out of wedlock, poor, orphaned, and raised in the West Indies, rose to power and became chief staff aide to General George Washington, was a driving force behind the Constitution, created the U.S. Coast Guard, and was the first Secretary of the Treasury.

The story unto itself is fascinating, but the manner in which creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and the rest of the creative team have fashioned it is brilliant, captivating, and enthralling.

Amazing Grace and Moral Conscience

Amazing Grace makes the brutality real.
Amazing Grace makes the brutality real.

Amazing Grace is the story of John Newton. Along with being the man who penned the hymn, which is used as the title of this musical, Newton was the son of a slave trader. It is on a voyage to American on a ship loaded with slaves that Newton feels pangs of conscience regarding the morality of the lucrative family business of which he is a part. Family pressures and traditions deem that he should be a slave trader and, yet, the compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart tug at his conscience and sense of justice.

At the memorial service in Charleston, S.C., President Obama, as part of his eulogy, sang “Amazing Grace,” using it to connect those who had been murdered to a responsibility that we all now carry to be a part of a “United” States of America. Newton’s journey of enlightenment in the musical Amazing Grace is one that the entire country must also eventually take.

Connecting US

Uplifting, resonant, and thought provoking, Amazing Grace and Hamilton are two new Broadway musicals that everyone, from school students to seniors, will find inspiring and valuable. Both are not only potential hallmarks of the 2015-2016 Broadway season, but they are also important connectors that join us with our past in order to see a new and better future.

tony-award222The Tony nominees for Best Musical have something in common that is quite unusual. That is they are all still running on Broadway. Often at least on of those musicals nominated will have closed by the time the awards roll around, but this year they are all up and on the boards. It’s an interesting and diverse group that’s on-hand for the 2015 awards. Here’s a look at each one.

An American in Paris

americaninparisBased on the magnificent film of the same title, the stage version of An American in Paris has captured reviewers and audiences alike. The musical features a book by Craig Lucas, in which he has reworked the story significantly without losing the romantic charm of the original. Making his Broadway debut as Jerry Mulligan, Robert Fairchild has received rave reviews, and costar Leanne Cope, as Lise Dassin, has also received plaudits. Plus, the production values, including design elements, are outstanding. An American in Paris has been given 12 nominations.

Fun Home

funhomeOf the four nominated shows, this may be the one that is most off the beaten path, but it is nonetheless a wondrous and inspiring musical about a daughter’s journey back home for her father’s funeral. The dad, who committed suicide, was a funeral director, who lived his life with a secret. Based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, which Bechdel based on her own life, it features a book by Lisa Kron; music by Jeanine Tesori; and lyrics by Lisa Kron.

The show is directed by Sam Gold and choreographed by Danny Mefford. The cast is first-rate and the staging and production values are premium. This is an insightful piece of work that deserves everyone’s attention. Fun Home also has a dozen Tony nods.

Something Rotten!

An American in Paris is buoyant.
An American in Paris is buoyant.

An American in Paris, which is based on the Gene Kelley film of the same name, is a major hit for a major reason. Those creating the piece dedicated themselves to taking an iconic and truly artistic film and turning into a stage musical that is unique and different from the film, but that still has many of the same hallmarks. They did not make the mistake of trying to recreate the greatness of the film, they made the wise decision of taking core elements and creating a piece that uses the magnificent power of live performance and utilizes a 21st century perspective.

The Reviews

The reviews are in and they are terrific! Here’s a sampling.

“It’s been years—decades, really—since I last saw production numbers that were infused with the kind of rich, sustained creativity that Mr. Wheeldon gives us throughout “An American in Paris.” This is what musical-comedy dance can look like when it’s made by a choreographer who knows how to do more than just stage a song. Once you’ve seen it, you’ll know what you’ve been missing, and find it hard ever again to settle for less.” Wall Street Journal

“Guiding his first musical, [Chrisptopher] Wheeldon shows a vibrant vision and buckets of imagination, transforming the 1951 Gene Kelly-Leslie Caron film that inspires the show. He’s also got a cast and design team at the top of their game.” NY Daily News

“The city of light is ablaze with movement in the rhapsodic new stage adaptation of “An American in Paris” that opened at the Palace Theater on Sunday, directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, a gifted luminary of the ballet world. This gorgeously danced — and just plain gorgeous — production pays loving tribute to the 1951 movie, to the marriage of music and movement, and to cherished notions about romance that have been a defining element of the American musical theater practically since its inception.” NY Times

Book, Music and Lyrics

It will capture your heart.
It will capture your heart.

Craig Lucas has done a rewrite of the Alan Jay Lerner film script, keeping the wit, romance, and verve, and adding grit and substance, making an American in Paris as musical comedy that is fuller and deeper than it celluloid counterpart.

The music and lyrics, by George and Ira Gershwin, are as good as any get. With tunes that include “I’ve Got Rhythm,” “Our Love is Here to Stay,” and “S’ Wonderful,” and the syncopated-jazz-classically-styled American in Paris theme and various musical elements that underscore this production, American in Paris is everything that makes the music on the American musical great.

Masterful Choreography and Direction

Christopher Wheeldon, director and choreographer with London’s Royal Ballet, is the artistic visionary who has brought An American in Paris to the stage. His name is now being freely mentioned in the same company as Robbins and Fosse. This is a stellar production due to his imagination, attention to detail, and diverse talents.

Tickets Now!

Tony time is here and you can expect An American in Paris to have its share on nominations and wins. This is a stunning show in everyway. We have not mentioned the wonderful performances, which includes Robert Fairchild, principal with the NY City Ballet, dancing, singing and, yes, acting, his way into everyone’s heart. London’s Leanne Cope, who plays opposite Fairchild, is a pixie-like powerful and beautiful presence.

Avenue Q is NOT for kids, but it’s still going strong Off-Broadway.

Off-Broadway theatre tickets are less expensive than those for Broadway shows, and, yet when you go to see an Off-Broadway production there’s a chance that you’ll be experiencing a play that was formerly on Broadway and will eventually transfer to The Great White Way. However, there are also many fantastic Off-Broadway plays and musicals that will never go the Broadway. The fact is theatregoers can find a wealth of dramatic and comedic gems at New York City’s Off-Broadway theatres.

Masterworks Theater Company

Midsummer 350x500The Masterworks Theater Company will be producing two classics in the upcoming months. Both will be performed at the 47th Street Theatre. First is the American classic The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. The Glass Menagerie is the story of a man, Tom Wingfield, who must escape from his family in order to live his life. Although Tom escapes, he can never fully leave behind the memories of his mother, Amanda, his sister, Laura, and his runaway father. This production, which is directed by Christopher Scott, begins performances May 8 and closes May 30.

Their second show is Shakespeare’s wonderful and magical comedy about love A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Confusion, jealously, and pure hilarity are omnipresent in this exceptionally funny comedy in which young love flourishes during this midsummer night. The show, which is directed by Tamilla Woodard, starts June 5 and closes June 28.

Masterworks Theater Company offers classic plays, exciting educational experiences, and great group learning opportunities. Student group rates are just $33 per ticket.

Last Chance for Into the Woods

The Roundabout’s critically acclaimed revival of Into the Woods is scheduled to close April 12. The retelling of happily ever after fairytales in this musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine is a musical theatre classic. Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton

Hamilton, the hip-hop musical by and starring Into the Heights creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is a huge hit Off-Broadway where it presently resides at the Public’s Newman Theatre. The run at the Public is sold out through to the end of its May 3 run. But don’t worry you’ll be able to see Hamilton, as it has been booked to play the Richard Rodgers Theatre where it will start previews on July 16. It opens August 6, 2015 and tickets go on sale March 8.

The Story

This is the story of a man who, at birth, was unlikely to become anyone of importance. Alexander Hamilton was a bastard child born in the Caribbean who was orphaned. Yet, he rose to power to be George Washington’s trusted advisor, to become a leading rebel, a major war hero, and to be the man to convince nations that the U.S. would be an economically viable and rich country. He also was a loving husband, who became a fixture in the nation’s first sex scandal.

In this new musical, the man who was his best friend, who was also the same man who would kill Hamilton in a duel, Aaron Burr, narrates. Other historical personages included in this musical include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Marquis de Lafayette, King George, and Eliza Hamilton.

The Team

Although Lin-Manuel Miranda, one of the primary creators and stars of In the Heights, is a versatile and gifted talent, there are others who are certainly important in bringing Hamilton to the stage. Miranda reunites with In the Heights collaborators Thomas Kail (director ) and Andy Blankenbuehler (choreographer).

Other involved in the process include scenic designer David Korins, costume designer Paul Tazewell, lighting designer Howell Binkley, and sound designer Nevin Steinberg.

Critical Reaction

Aaron Burr’s Rap about Hamilton.

The reaction from reviewers has been overwhelmingly positive and they should help to make Hamilton an instant hit when it transfers to Broadway.

6.207210Variety reviewer Marilyn Stasio said “There should be a huge audience for this irresistible show. Although the premise sounds outlandish, it takes about two seconds to surrender to the musical sweep of the sung-through score and to Miranda’s amazing vision of his towering historical subject as an ideological contemporary who reflects the thoughts and speaks the language of a vibrant young generation of immigrant strivers. It’s a wonderfully humanizing view of history.”

Elisabeth Vincentelli of The New York Post observed, “The production itself is sterling, energetically directed and choreographed by fellow “In the Heights” alum Thomas Kail and Andy Blankenbuehler, respectively. And you won’t soon forget Brian d’Arcy James’ hilarious turn as a smug King George.”

From USA Today Elysa Gardner noted, “Live entertainment doesn’t get more exciting than this, in any form. So believe the hype: Hamilton is revolutionary in its own right, and an extraordinary achievement.”

Broadway’s First Hit of 2015-16?

Is Hamilton a preordained Broadway hit? Great reviews, a sold out run at the Public through May, and an instant transfer, make it as much a preordained hit as anything can be. It has not opened on Broadway yet, but chances are when tickets go on sale March 8, there will be a lot of people looking for the best seats possible at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Chita Rivera stars in the Broadway musical The Visit

The musical The Visit is on Broadway starting in March and student group tickets are $45.00 while standard group discounts to see Chita Rivera offer 15% to 20% off. The Visit is a new musical by Kander, Ebb and McNally. Based on the modern classic by Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt, This musical takes us on a journey that demands that we question how far we would go to reap the benefits associated with financial security. Those associated with this Broadway musical are world-class professionals. Here’s a look at some of those involved in creating The Visit.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt

Swiss playwright Dürrenmatt.
Swiss playwright Dürrenmatt.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt (January 5, 1921- December 14, 1990) was a politically active writer who embraced Brecht’s Epic Theatre. Epic Theatre wants us to think about what we are seeing; it eschews emotion because emotion makes us complacent. It uses various techniques focused on reminding us that we are watching a play; it asks us to think about the issues that the show is examining, and it is focused on getting audiences to work towards solving problematic social issues.

Dürrenmatt had his first play produced when he was 26. Entitled It Is Written, the show focuses on a fight between a controversy-loving cynic and a religious fanatic who interprets scripture literally. The battle between the two central characters takes place while the city in which they live is under attack. When the play opened in April 1947, it caused a riot in the theatre and was hotly protested. He wrote The Visit in 1956. It’s mix of comedy and drama, of social satire and social commentary, and of highly theatrical characters with those realistically caught the attention of critics and audiences.

The Writing Team

Longtime writing team Kander and Ebb
Longtime writing team Kander and Ebb

John Kander, composer, and Fred Ebb, lyricist, have given Broadway and world audiences some of the most thought-provoking musicals to ever grace the stage. These include two shows that are presently enjoying strong revivals on Broadway, Cabaret (1966) and Chicago (1975). Other important works include The Scottsboro Boys (2010), Zorba (1968), and Kiss of the Spiderwoman (1992).

The duo originally adapted The Visit in 2001 with Terrence McNally writing the book. A Chicago premiere, which starred Rivera, was well received, however, after the 911 attacks the move to Broadway was cancelled. There have been various regional productions, including the 2014 run at the Berkshire Theatre festival, starring Rivera.

Librettist Terrence McNally is the winner of four Tonys. He received the Tony Award for Best Play for Love! Valour! Compassion! and Master Class, and the Tony for Best Book of a Musical for Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime. His career has spanned five decades; he has seen over 25 of his plays and musicals produced on Broadway stages.

Director and Choreographer

Kander & Ebb The Visit Broadway discounts Chita Rivera
The Visit is darkly humorous.

Tony winning Scottish Director John Doyle helms the production of The Visit. Doyle has distinguished himself as an innovator having mounted successful Broadway revivals of two Stephen Sondheim musicals, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Company. Choreographer Graciela Daniele studied with Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham while working with some of Broadway’s most accomplished artists, including Bob Fosse, Agnes de Mille, and Michael Bennett. Nominated for 10 Tonys, she has choreographed the Broadway productions of Ragtime, The Rink, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Chita Rivera

Chita Rivera in The musical The Visit on Broadway
Chita Rivera is a true showstopper.

Chita Rivera has starred in many Kander and Ebb musicals, including Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and The Rink. She has won two Tonys and been nominated nine times. On Broadway, she created the role of Anita in West Side Story (1957), Velma Kelly in Chicago (1975), and Aurora in Kiss of the Spiderwoman (1992).

Rivera has a magnificent spirit and effervescent energy. In 1986, when the actress was starring in Jerry’s Girls on Broadway, she was in a serious car accident, which broke her left leg in 12 places. Rivera had to have numerous operations, 18 screws inserted, two braces attached, and engaged in aggressive rehab. The result was an amazing comeback. She was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom 2009.

Expect a World-Class Musical

The Show

The 10-person cast is simply winning!

In 1988, when Into the Woods was first produced on Broadway, it won three Tonys, including Best Score (Stephen Sondheim) and Best Book (James Lapine). It also received numerous Drama Desk awards. The musical is filled with richly imagined characters, smartly written humor, and emotionally intense and honest moments.

Into the Woods takes some of the better-known fairytales, such as Rapunzel, The Baker’s Wife, Jack and the Bean Stock, Little Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella, and in the first act offers audiences versions of these tales that end happily. But in the second act, there’s a price to be paid for happiness, and various characters meet their demise, find heartache, and discover that the world is not as simple as first thought.

This is a tale beautifully told.
This is a tale beautifully told.

Revenge, mystery, and hatred overshadow the second act, as Sondheim and Lapine reveal that life is an amazing amalgam of wondrous happiness and hopeless strife. In the end, there is victory, redemption, and joy, and what was once thought to be simple has been revealed to be complex, and, at the same time rich.

The storytelling is witty, honest, and emotionally charged and the score and lyrics are engaging, genuine, and poignant. Into the Woods is a classic American musical that is enjoying a revival that has reimaged this work in a highly theatrical manner. (Note: this production is recommended for audiences ages 10 and above.)

300px-LesMisLogoIf your group is looking to see a Broadway musical that will take you on an inspiring emotional journey, then consider seeing Les Misérables. The new production of the worldwide hit musical Les Misérables, which offers big group discounts, is noted for being awe inspiring, powerful, and spectacular. The recent success and popularity of the film, the reputation of the show overall as being great theatre, and the manner in which this musical affects emotions have combined to make this revival one that is loved by audiences.

Running Strong

group discount tickets Les Meserables Broadway Imperial Theatyre
This production is epic and fluid.

This revival of Les Misérables opened in March 2014, and as it nears it’s one-year anniversary, it is running strong. The performances and the production and design standards won the praises of reviews and audiences. This is a first-class revival that has been honed and refined. Plus, this is not a simple reconstitution of former productions.

One of the points to bringing Les Misérables back to Broadway had to do with featuring a reimagined production. The 2006 revival, which came to The Great White Way just three years after the original closed, was considered by many to be a blurred and weak facsimile of the show that enthralled audiences for years, garnered 6 Tony wins, and ran for 16 years, offering 6,680 performances. This version has been praised for its high production standards, exciting direction, and fine performances.

Characters, Story and Music and Lyrics Are Moving

Les Miserables group discounts Broadway
There’s comedy, as well as heightened drama.

If you’re looking for a story that is filled with emotional character- and plot-driven twists and turns, then Les Misérables is certainly your show. The emotional journey of Jean Valjean is all encompassing. In addition, the charged motivations of characters such as Javert, Fantine, and Cosette, are completely engaging.

The plot is complex; yet, it is also clearly and cleanly delineated as one story intersects with another, and then another intersects with that one. There’s plenty of comedy and drama in this musical.

The music is monumental. It reaches great heights at times, and at other times offers subtleties that are intriguing. The lyrics in numbers such as “I Dreamed a Dream” and “Who Am I?” go right to the emotional essence of a character, while a number like “Master of the House” gives us the comic relief we desire in a musical that focuses on vaulting emotions and tragedy, while offering hope.

Hope is Ours

Hope is ours.
Hope is ours.

Despite all of the heartache in Les Misérables, there is hope through redemption and love. That is the final part of the journey for Valjean and for us. It is inspiring and emotional. Les Misérables has the potential to be a great evening in the theatre and this revival gives audiences that and much more.

Student group prices are as low as $37 per ticket and the standard group price range is from $37 to $125. All Tickets Inc. can get your group great discount seats to see this latest revival of Les Misérables. For group discount tickets, contact us today by calling 1-800-922-0716. We’ll be glad to help you book your group’s sojourn to the Imperial Theatre to see one of Broadway’s most powerful productions.

It Shoulda Been You is an engaging musical comedy about an impending interfaith marriage.

Directed by David Hyde Pierce and starring Tyne Daly, It Shoulda Been You is a musical comedy in which a Jewish girlfriend and Catholic boyfriend are about to tie the proverbial interfaith knot. They look to have the perfect wedding, which will serve as their gateway to an equally perfect marriage.

Then again, this is a musical comedy, and that means that perfection is about to be completely compromised. The bride’s ex-boyfriend arrives on the scene and secrets are revealed, plots are hatched, and what was to have ended happily ever after now seems to be lurching towards disaster. However, this is a musical comedy, and that means that it does end happily.

Something Rotten!

Preview: Mar 23rd, Open: Apr 22nd

th-4Imagine, musical comedy being born in the age of William Shakespeare. That’s the basic premise of this musical comedy set in Elizabethan England in which two upstart writers decide to dethrone the egotistical Bard of Avon. But they need a fresh and new idea! In Something Rotten! that idea is to combine a stage play with music and lyrics, creating a whole new stage animal.

Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (Aladdin, Book of Mormon), Something Rotten! is a romp of a musical comedy. Brothers Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick have created the music and lyrics and Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell have written the book. Karey Kirkpatrick’s credits include the screenplays for James and the Giant Peach, Chicken Run, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Charlotte’s Web and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Wayne Kirkpatrick’s work includes the song “Change the World” (1998 Grammy, Song of the Year, written with Tommy Sims and Gordon Kennedy) and innumerable popular song that have been recorded by various artists including Faith Hill, Garth Brooks, Babyface, Amy Grant, Joe Cocker, Kathy Mattea, Martina McBride, Wynonna Judd, Trisha Yearwood, Bonnie Raitt, and Eric Clapton. John O’Farrell, co-writer of the book, is a British writer who has worked on numerous British and U.S. TV and film projects.

The Heart of Robin Hood

The Heart of Robin Hood is filled with daring.

The Heart of Robin Hood, with music by the popular and acclaimed band Parsonsfield and book by David Farr, and lyrics by Parsonsfield and Farr, comes to Broadway for a limited run. This is a big musical with well-honed stage combat and stunts, engaging characters, a great story, and wonderful music.

The musical reveals Robin Hood to be a crook but not, at first, an altruistic one. And his band of men is anything but merry. However, Marion manages to change all that, as Robin is transformed in this musical and goodness reigns amongst those who are beleaguered by Prince John.

There's plenty of action.
There’s plenty of action.

Parsonsfield, which was formerly known as Poor Old Shine, is a five-piece Americana band from Connecticut. They utilize a rowdy, rock-‘n’-roll spirit and combine it in a unique way with bluegrass and folk influences. They have transformed all preconceptions about what people think banjos and mandolins should sound like. David Farr is the author of The Heart of Robin Hood and is a British stage director, playwright, and Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Parsonsfield performs the music live for this show.

If you love musical theatre, there’s a lot of new production from which to choose. This week All Tickets previews the second-half of the 2014-2015, including three different blogs on musicals. In this first one, we’ll look at The Visit, Dr. Zhivago, and An American In Paris.

The Visit

Kander & Ebb The Visit Broadway discounts Chita Rivera
The Visit is darkly humorous.

The Visit stars Broadway veteran and multi-Tony-winner Chita Rivera. Rivera plays Claire Zachanassian, an aging, rich woman who has married and been widowed numerous times. She returns after many decades to her hometown of Müllen. Müllen is in a terrible economic depression and the arrival of Claire Zachanassian brings the residents hope. They become even more hopeful when she says that she will help them get out of their horrible economic slump.

The generous offer by Zachanassian seems too good to be true, especially since she was forced to leave Müllen when, as a teenage girl, she became pregnant out of wedlock. Despite the great shame that was heaped upon her, Zachanassian appears to have forgiven everyone. Well, almost everyone. She makes a deal with almost every citizen in the town. If they revenge the wrong done to her by the man who got her pregnant, they will be generously rewarded.

This dark musical comedy, which is an adaptation of the play by Swiss author Friedrich Dürrenmatt, is ripe material for the team of Kander and Ebb who gave us Chicago, Cabaret, and Kiss of the Spider Woman. The book, written by the versatile Terrence McNally, offers intrigue, comedy, and drama. The Visit is highly anticipated.

Doctor Zhivago

Dr. Zhivago Broadway musical group discounts see Tam Mutu
Tam Mutu plays Zhivago.

The cast for the musical Doctor Zhivago was recently announced and it includes Tam Mutu, who is well known on London’s West End, as the title character. Kelli Barret (Baby, It’s You and The Royal Family) joins him as the enigmatic Lara Guishar and Tom Hewitt (Chicago, The Lion King, and Jesus Christ Superstar) is the rough and practical Viktor Komarovsky. Paul Nolan (Once and Jesus Christ Superstar ) plays the rebellious Pasha Antipov and Lora Lee Gayer (Follies) is the caring and dejected wife of Zhivago, Tonia Gromeko.

The show is a sweeping, romantic epic, as Yurii Zhivago, poet and doctor, struggles with his passions, emotions, and desires. Set against the turbulent years of Word War I and the Russian Revolution, Doctor Zhivago is a story of longing, love, and loss. This is a musical that will play upon every emotion you possess.

Directed by Des McAnuff (Tommy, Big River), Doctor Zhivago features music by Lucy Simon (The Secret Garden) lyrics by Michael Korie and Amy Powers, and book by Michael Weller (Loose Ends). The show is slated to preview on Broadway starting March 27 and open April 21, 2015.

An America in Paris

Perhaps the finest American movie musical ever made, An American in Paris, now comes to the Broadway stage. Based on the movie that starred Gene Kelly, was directed by Vincente Minnelli, and written by Alan Jay Lerner, An American in Paris featured music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won six, including Best Screenplay, Musical Score, and Picture.

The Broadway show is directed and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Christopher Wheeldon, who is known for his contemporary ballet choreography. The musical stars Robert Fairchild (NYC Ballet) as Jerry Mulligan and Leanne Cope (Royal Ballet) as Lise Dassin. Craig Lucas (The Light in the Piazza, Prelude to a Kiss, and Reckless) wrote the book for the show.

An American in Paris tells the story of American artist Jerry Mulligan, living and painting in post-World War II Paris. Mulligan is a man who is pursued by a rich woman, Milo Davenport, who wants to support him financially if he’ll become romantically involved with her, and is attracted to and falls in love with Lise, who is the young woman night club owner Henri Baurel wants to marry. Love triangles abound in An American in Paris, which is a true Hollywood love story in everyway, including its happy ending.

Group tickets Broadway Honeymoon in Vegas
Group tickets Broadway Honeymoon in Vegas
Danza, O’Malley & McClure star.

It’s not exactly under the radar. The musical comedy Honeymoon in Vegas had a very fine run at the Paper Mill Playhouse. It got good reactions, sold well, and impressed many. Right now it is in previews on Broadway. Those previews started about three weeks ago, and they will continue for about five more weeks. Chances are the show you see now will not be the show that arrives on the boards on opening night.

So, will Honeymoon in Vegas be a big hit? You never can tell with any show, but one thing is for certain, this musical comedy has a lot in its favor. Here are five reasons why this Broadway musical could be the next much sought after Broadway experience.

Paper Mill Playhouse Production

th-11The Paper Mill Playhouse, which most recently gave Broadway the hit musical Newsies, not only has a great reputation, but their production of Honeymoon in Vegas. Plus, which was mounted this past summer, got very strong reviews. That included an extremely positive notice from the NY Times lead reviewer. That’s not a bad start for a show transferring to Broadway.

McClure, Danza, O’Malley

Three very strong and experienced Broadway performers, Rob McClure (Jack Singer), Brynn O’Malley (Betsy Nolan), and Tony Danza (Tommy Korman), are in lead roles. This cast knows how to play musical comedy, and they have good connections on stage.

The Writing Team

th-13This is a solid duo. Honeymoon in Vegas is adapted by Jason Robert Brown (music and lyrics), who has numerous Tonys, including two 2014 Tony Awards, one for Best Original Score and one for Best Orchestrations for The Bridges of madison County. Andrew Bergman is a screenwriter. Whose comedy credits include Blazing Saddles, Soapdish, and Honeymoon in Vegas. Can these two write a winning musical comedy? One would think, yes.

Solid Directing and Choreography

Gary Griffin directs and Denis Jones choreographs. Both performed the same duties for the Paper Mill production. Griffin first came to light on Broadway as the director of The Color Purple, and Jones has previously been a dance, dance captain, and associate choreographer on The Great White Way. His last Broadway project was Legally Blonde.

Time is on Their Side

th-10The musical comedy started previews at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on November 18th. They will be working the show and solidifying the entire piece until opening night, which is January 15, 2015. That’s a solid chunk of time to get this musical polished and sparkling for Broadway.

Williams as Peter Pan.

Banking on the popularity of their recent live telecast of The Sound of Music, NBC will air a live version of the Broadway musical Peter Pan. Based on the play by Sir James M. Barrie, the musical first premiered on Broadway in 1954. Since its Broadway premiere, it has been produced three times on television (1955, 1956, and 1960), with each version starring the original Peter Pan, Mary Martin. There have been three Broadway revivals, 1979 starring Sandy Duncan and 1991 and 1998 starring Cathy Rigby. The Rigby productions have also been remounted on Broadway.

Original Musical

The play Peter Pan, which Barrie wrote on 1904, was a huge hit. The musical also became massively popular. With music by Jule Styne, Mark Charlap, and Trude Rittmann (dance arrangements), lyrics by Betty Comden, Adolph Green, and Carolyn Leigh and the book a recounting of the original by Barrie, Peter Pan became an instant family-friendly event.

Mary Martin as Peter.
Mary Martin as Peter.

The musical opened on October 20, 1954, at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York for a limited run of 152 performances. The limited run was due to the fact that the production had been sold to NBC, ensuring its financial success despite the small number of Broadway performances. Its last performance occurred on February 26, 1955. It won three Tonys that year, with Mary Martin (Peter Pan) winning for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical and Cyril Ritchard (Captain Hook) winning for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.

Live Tonight

Although many people know actor Christopher Walken for the many psychotic characters that he has played in various films, when the actor first started in the business he was a dancer and a singer. No stranger to musicals or playing dastardly characters, Walken should be right at home as Captain Hook, who is, after all, “the the swiniest swine in world [and]… the dirtiest dog in this wonderful world.”

A behind the scenes look at Peter Pan from ENT.

Playing the ultimate boy who will never grow up is Allison Williams. Williams, who is the daughter of NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams and TV producer Jane Gillan Stoddard, is best known for her role of Marnie Michaels in the HBO series Girls. Williams is an actress, comedian, and musician, and she acknowledges that one of the reasons she accepted the role was to change her public image as a performer.

Peter Panization

Peter and the Starcatcher was a critical success.
Peter and the Starcatcher was a critical success.

Lately, New York has had a fascination with Peter Pan. In recent years, Cathy Rigby has returned to play the role during the Christmas season, and Peter and the Starcatcher, the story of how Peter Pan became the boy who would never grow up, was a hit both on and off Broadway. It won 5 Tonys in 2013 and is touring the U.S. starting in January 2015. The 2014-2015 Broadway theatre season will feature the new musical entitled Finding Neverland, which focuses on how author J.M. Barrie found his inspiration to create Peter Pan. It was recently produced at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, MA.

Watching Peter Pan Tonight

Walken on Fallon talking about the production.

Tonight’s show is live, which means there are no retakes. This is a one-shot deal and as close to a stage production as TV can get. A throwback to the early days of TV, which included productions of classic dramas such as Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and musicals like Peter Pan and Cinderella, there’s sure to be a raw energy tonight when this production premieres on NBC at 8 p.m.

The author finds new material.

In Finding Neverland, Barrie is desperate; he has to create another hit play. But he cannot seem to find an idea. Down and out and desperately in search of a subject for the stage, Barrie has a chance encounter with a widow and her children. That meeting in a London park leads to the development of a friendship and relationship with the family that revives Barrie’s spirit and his career. The family gives Barrie the insight, inspiration, and vision to change his life.

Inspired by the 2004 film of the same title, Finding Neverland is an enchanting, energetic, and inspiring musical that looks to be a Broadway hit.

The Gazillion Bubble Show is great for families.
The Gazillion Bubble Show is great for families.

Off-Broadway offers audiences great plays and musicals at rates much lower than you’ll find on Broadway. Some Off-Broadway long run shows had strong Broadway runs and then moved to Off-Broadway. Some started in a smaller OBW theatre, made a successful move to BW, and then eventually went back to the more intimate venue.

What makes a theatre an Off-Broadway house? It’s the number of seats, as well as the fact that it is in NYC. OBW theatres seat between 100 and 499, while Broadway venues are 500-plus, and Off-Off-Broadway spaces are 99 seats or less. It’s cheaper to produce a play OBW, and that means that ticket prices are lower, as is the number of people who compose a group. For many shows in the smaller theatres groups are designated as being 8 or more.

Off-Broadway you will find new shows, revivals, long runs, and transfers from The Great White Way. Here’s a look at just a few of the fine shows you’ll find in the smaller OBW theatres.

Avenue Q

Avenue Q is NOT for kids.
Avenue Q is NOT for kids.

The adult puppet/people show about a young man out of college who is trying to make it in NYC started OBW, was a big hit, moved to Broadway, and eventually found its way back to a smaller space. Avenue Q, which is for adults, is funny and touching. The puppetry techniques, musical numbers, and interesting interactions and characters make this show a winner. If your group is looking for a great time that includes some naughty humor, Avenue Q is a great choice.

Cougar The Musical

Cougar The Musical is about three very sexy woman all of who m are over 40 and primed for sex and, perhaps, even love. In this adult musical the three leads venture to find and define themselves. Funny, touching, brassy, and sassy, Cougar The Musical lays it on the line and then some.

The Fantasticks

The original cast of The Fantasticks.
The original cast of The Fantasticks.

After a run that lasted more than 40 years and resulted in 17,162 performances, The Fantasticks, which had started in the late 1950s, closed. In 2006, Tom Jones, one of its creators, directed the present production, which is the New York revival. Simplicity in staging and production elements define The Fantasticks, as does theatrical standards such as “Soon It’s Gonna Rain” and “Try to Remember.” The prototypical boy finds girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl again story is charmingly told. Funny, ironic, and sentimental in the nicest way, The Fantasticks is a classic American musical.

For Families

There are plenty of great shows for families with kids. These include Fuerza Bruta, Gazillion Bubble Show, and iLuminate: Artists of Light. None of these shows are typical plot-based, realistic plays or musicals. Each uses highly theatrical techniques.

ILuminate: Artist of light is stunning.
ILuminate: Artist of light is stunning.

With Fuerza Bruta, the audience stands for the entire time, shifting and turning to catch different parts of the show, which occurs around, above, and under you. It is a theatrical experience you will long remember. The Gazillion Bubble Show is just that, an amazing performance that utilizes all sorts of bubbles. Get ready to experience lasers, special lighting effects, and beautiful bubble artistry. iLuminate: Artists of Light is an hour-long spectacle during which dancers perform a story in the dark but with their bodies and characters defined by lights that they wear. The show features a techno-music score and costumes and set pieces that are defined by light.

This is a good time to get group discount tickets to these revivals. Don’t wait, as we expect each of these to be big.

On the Town

It is the hit of the young Broadway season, the latest revival of On the Town. With a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music Leonard Bernstein, the John Rando directed and Joshua Bergasse choreographer revival is stunning. This is a pull out all stops production.

On the Town has received rave reviews. As an example, reviewer Terry Teachout in The Wall Street Journal says, “When did you last see a musical that MADE YOU WANT TO SHOUT WITH JOY? If you’ve been feeling anxious about the lukewarm state of American musical comedy, get ready to GET HOT AGAIN: ON THE TOWN IS EVERYTHING A GREAT SHOW SHOULD BE. ANYONE WHO ISN’T THRILLED BY THIS PRODUCTION NEEDS A HEART TRANSPLANT.”

The musical opened on October 16th and it is planning a long run at The Lyric Theatre on Broadway.

Three other revivals will be opening this season that should be popular with Broadway group ticket buyers. Side Show, which was first seen on Broadway in 1998, received four Tony nominations. The musical about Violet and Daisy Hilton, twins who lived their entire lives in a conjoined state, is edgy, dark, revelatory, and touching. The sensational aspect of their lives, which fascinated the media and public, held sway over them, and their fight to be treated as human beings was ongoing. Recently, Side Show has received fine reviews in a revamped, darker version that was first produced at La Jolla Playhouse and then at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Side Show begins previews October 28th and opens on November 17th.

On the Twentieth Century musical group tickets broadway
The revival of On the Twentieth Century stars Chenoweth and Gallagher.

In 1978, the musical On the Twentieth Century received 9 Tony nominations and received 5 of the awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score. John Cullum and Kevin Kline also won Tonys for their work. Expect ongoing laughs aboard the Twentieth Century, which is a luxury train that takes passengers from Chicago to New York City. Luck, love, chance, misfortune, and mischief are all a part of the journey when bankrupt theater producer Oscar Jaffee (Golden Globe® winner Peter Gallagher) leaves on a crazed mission to entice glamorous Hollywood starlet Lily Garland (Emmy® and Tony Award® winner Kristin Chenoweth) to play the lead in his new epic drama. However, there’s one catch (at least), the epic drama does not exist. However, the train ride reignites the spark between Jaffee and Garland, former lovers, as they create a play from scratch, and find the money to get it all the way to Broadway!

You will want to get group tickets quickly for On the Twentieth Century, which will be produced by the Roundabout Theatre and has a limited run. The show, which stars Peter Gallagher as Oscar Jaffe and Kristin Chenoweth as Lily Garland, previews February 12, 2015 and opens on March 12th. It will close June 5th.

The stars of The King and I.

The fourth revival is a really big one. The King and I comes to Broadway with a preview on March 15, 2015 and opening night set for March 16, 2015. The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic will star Kelli O’Hara as Anna and Ken Watanabe as The King of Siam. This musical, which originally starred the legendary Yul Brenner as The King and Gertrude Lawrence as Anna, has enjoyed numerous Broadway revivals. Some of the Broadway standards from the musical include “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Shall We Dance?” and “Getting to Know You.”

Sting’s The Last Ship starts performances.

One new show, The Last Ship, with music and lyrics by Sting and book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey, began performances last night while, Soul Man, which had a short run at Circle in the Square last year, is getting ready to begin an Off-Broadway run. Plus, it’s been announced that Tony-winning director Kenny Leon will be directing the revival of Children of a Lesser God.

The Last Ship

The Last Ship, which is directed by Joe Mantello, will open on October 26 at the Neil Simon Theatre. The musical, which is based on Sting’s boyhood experiences, focuses on a small English shipbuilding village, which is undergoing extreme financial distress. When a young man, Gideon Fletcher, returns home to the town after journeying for years around the world, he discovers how precious and important his hometown is. In a symbolic show of strength, the people in the town decide to erect a massive monument to the industry and way of life that has sustained them. Rachel Tucker, who is well known on the West End, and Broadway favorites Michael Esper and Aaron Lazar star in The Last Ship.

Soul Man

Soul Man, the musical about the simultaneously controversial and beloved father of popular Jewish music, rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, will begin performances on November 25th. The musical features music by Shlomo Carlebach, lyrics by David Schechter with additional lyrics by Carlebach and a book by Daniel S. Wise. It opens on December 14th at The Actors Temple.

Soul Man tells the story of the “Rock Star Rabbi” of the 1960s who tried to harmoniously blend his traditional beliefs with the “free love” generation. The show delves into Carlebach’s friendship with legendary jazz singer Nina Simone and offers insights into this highly complex religious and musical man.

Children of a Lesser God

Playwright Mark Medoff ‘s Children of a Lesser God, which opened on Broadway in 1980, is set to return to the legitimate stage for the first time. Following a highly successful run at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, the Broadway production, directed by Gordon Davidson, opened on March 30, 1980 at the Longacre Theatre. It ran for 887 performances. The original cast included Phyllis Frelich as Sarah and John Rubinstein as James. Both won Tonys for their roles.

Children of a Lesser God is the story of James Leeds and Sarah Norman. James is a new teacher at a school for the deaf, while Sarah is the school’s former star student who made the decision to stay at the school, performing cleaning chores, rather than venturing out into the world. Upon arrival, the new teacher takes an immediate interest in Sarah. As they become romantically involved, James attempts to persuade Sarah to communicate orally through lip reading. Their relationship becomes a battle of wills as Sarah refuses to acquiesce to James’ wishes, and he refuses to relinquish his desire to have her communicate on his preferred level. Children of a Lesser God is a powerful play about individuality, relationships, and conformity.

Barrie finds electrifying energy in his story.
Barrie finds electrifying energy in his story.

There’s a lot happening on Broadway and a lot more to come. We’ve got news on two musicals, including the latest show directed by Tony-winner Diane Paulus, Finding Neverland, and the Barry Levinson/Sheryl Crow musical Diner, which is based on Levinson’s film of the same name.

Barrie-based Musical

When J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan he was desperate for a new hit play. The tired, and apparently written-out writer, found his inspiration in a real-life mother and her children. The mother was widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, and Barry’s connection with the children eventually led to him creating his biggest hit.

The new musical Finding Neverland uses this true story as it foundation. Previews are set to start in March 2015, after the present tenant, Motown, closes. Although casting for the Broadway production has not yet been announced, the stellar American Repertory Theater cast in Cambridge, Massachusetts, included Tony nominee Jeremy Jordan as J.M. Barrie and Olivier winner Laura Michelle Kelly as Sylvia Llewelyn Davis.

The musical includes music and lyrics by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy and a book by James Graham. This work-for-the-stage is based on the 2004 film written by David Magee. Finding Neverland will have scenic design by Scott Pask, lighting design by Phillip S. Rosenberg, costume design by Suttirat Larlarb and sound design by Jonathan Deans. The ART production also included cast members Carolee Carmello, Michael McGrath and Jeanna de Waal. Tony nominee and Glee star Matthew Morrison had starred as Barrie in an industry-only workshop of the musical that was seen in late March 2014 in New York.

Diner, The Musical

Coming to Broadway?
Coming to Broadway?

Although the new musical, which is based on the Barry Levinson film that included so many young actors who would become stars, ran into trouble in trying to initially get to Broadway more than a year ago, that did not stop Crow and Levinson from pushing forward with the project. The news is that Diner will be given a production at the Signature Theatre in Washington, D.C. with performances commencing December 9th. The new musical, which is looking to get to The Great White Way, will be directed by the person who brought the musical Nice Work if You Can Get It to Broadway, Kathleen Marshall. The creative team feels as if the Signature is the perfect venue for their new show, as the theatre is known as being an incubator for new shows.

Washington, D.C. is becoming a very strong tryout town. The latest shows to come through include Side Show, the reworking of Gigi, and If/Then. There are three other world premiere’s slated for the Signature this year. They include Kid Victory, by John Kander (Chicago) and Greg Pierce, a co-production with New York’s Vineyard Theatre; Soon, which has a book, music and lyrics by Nick Blaemire; and Simply Sondheim, a new revue of the music of Stephen Sondheim. This season marks the Signature’s 25th anniversary.

The buzz around the Broadway group sales office is that two more productions are looking at Broadway opening in 2014-2015. They are Side Show, which has been, according to theater executives involved with the production, enjoying a successful run at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington. The other show that may be arriving on The Great White Way is the West End revival of David Hare’s Skylight, starring Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy.

The show had a short run on Broadway in 1997. Since that time, it has been revised extensively. The Washington run has received rave reviews. Prior to playing D.C., this version was also seen at the La Jolla Playhouse last year.

Side Show, which is by Bill Russell (book and lyrics) and Henry Krieger (music), ran from October 16, 1997 to January 4, 1998, and was nominated for four Tonys. New York producer Darren Bagert (“Buyer & Cellar,” “Of Mice and Men”) is trying to generate interest in the project.

As noted in an earlier blog, there are rumors around about all sorts of productions coming to Broadway, including Katy Perry in Clueless (a musical which has yet to be finished.) This rumor holds a bit more substance. It involves the revival of David Hare’s Skylight, which is currently enjoying an acclaimed run on London’s West End with Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy.

Mulligan’s major breakthrough occurred when she was cast as Jenny in the 2009 independent film An Education, directed by Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig and written by Nick Hornby. The film and Mulligan’s performance received rave reviews, and she was nominated for an Academy Award, Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, and won a BAFTA Award.

Tony winner and Oscar nominee Stephen Daldry directed the production of Skylight. It’s playing a limited engagement at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre through August 23. Skylight is the story of a teacher, Kyra Hollis (Mulligan), who has an impromptu visit from her former lover Tom Sergeant (Nighy) and his son Edward (Matthew Beard).

Mulligan has appeared in The Great Gatsby, Drive, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Pride and Prejudice, When Did You Last See Your Father?, and Public Enemies. Her first Broadway stage appearance was as Nina in the 2008 production of Chekhov’s The Seagull.

Nighy has performed in Hare’s Pravda, Map of the World, a previous production of Skylight and a Broadway mounting of the playwright’s The Vertical Hour. His film credits, which are numerous, include Love Actually, Wild Target, Valkyrie, The Constant Gardner, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Will Katy Perry star in Clueless?
Will Katy Perry star in Clueless?

There’s a lot of speculation and some confirmed facts regarding Broadway’s 2014-2015 season. Questions include will Helen Mirren be on The Great White Way and what musical may Katy Perry appear in? Here’s a quick look at some of the latest rumors and news.

Katy Perry

File this under rumor or, at least speculation. It’s said that singer Katy Perry is looking to make her Broadway debut in the musical Clueless. But before that happens the musical adaptation has to be completed. The film’s screenwriter and director Amy Heckerling is undertaking the musical adaptation of Clueless. She’s writing the book and lyrics. No news on who is composing the music.

The movie was a hit.
The movie was a hit.

An enthusiastic Heckerling said to Vulture that pop singer Perry has expressed an interest in the project. The ‘90s film, which starred Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, the late Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd, was a hit. The film, which is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, focuses on a Beverly Hills high school student named Cher. Cher and her friend, Dionne; together, they decide to help a transfer student, giving her a makeover and playing matchmaker for her. Through the process, Cher discovers that despite her popularity, she herself is in need of a makeover to find the relationship with the person for whom she longs.

Heckerling said, “Katy Perry has expressed interest, and I love her to death.” However, Heckerling has expressed hesitation due to Perry’s crazy schedule, and she noted, “Maybe Iggy (Azalea) would do it!” Azalea has grromed herself for the role in her hit video Fancy, where she dominates a high school with her Clueless-based group.

When might this project happen? No one is sure. So stay tuned. When we know more, so too will you.

Oscar winner Helen Mirren has confirmed that she will start rehearsals in mid-January 2015 for the Broadway production of Peter Morgan’s The Audience. The Audience enjoyed an acclaimed West End run in 2013. It is projected to open on Broadway in February 2015. In the play, Mirren plays Queen Elizabeth II. The drama is projected to officially open at a Shubert Theater in March.

The Audience focuses on the life of Queen Elizabeth II from 1952 to her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. The play looks at her private weekly meetings with all of England’s Prime Ministers, which were held at Buckingham Palace. Morgan may add Tony Blair, who was not featured in London, to the New York cast of characters.

Hugh Jackman hosts this year’s Tonys.

The Tony Awards will be held at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 8, 2014, from 8 PM (ET) to 11 PM. The host is Hugh Jackman who is replacing Neil Patrick Harris. Harris has been a huge hit as the host for a series of years, but this season he is a contender for a Tony as he is playing the lead in the musical comedy Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Highlights

There will be many performances, of course, as Broadway uses the night to strut its stuff, give out its most prestigious awards, and generate box office. Performers include Sting, Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, Alan Cumming, and Fantasia.

Neil Patrick Harris in Hedwig and the Angry Inch could be a winner!
Neil Patrick Harris in Hedwig and the Angry Inch could be a winner!

Of course, Tony nominees from musicals will be highlighted, including the following:

  • 2014 Tony Nominee Neil Patrick Harris and the cast of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
  • 2014 Tony nominee Sutton Foster with the cast of Violet.
  • 2014 Tony Nominee Idina Menzel performing from the new musical If/Then.

Tony Nominated Musicals

The night will include performances by casts who are appearing in either a show that’s nominated for Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical. These include Aladdin, Les Misérables, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Bullets Over Broadway, and Rocky.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder leads all nominees.
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder leads all nominees.

This is a great time to catch a glimpse of all of the nominees and to, perhaps, make some decisions as to what makes your list as a “must see” show. A musical that wins numerous Tonys always has a better chance of enjoying a long run.

There are various multiple Tony winners that are in long runs on Broadway, including The Book of Mormon, Once, Jersey Boys, Chicago, The Lion King, Wicked, and Broadway’s longest running show ever, The Phantom of the Opera.

Some Predictions

Well, here is goes, just a few quick predictions for this year’s Tonys. I do not think that Audra McDonald will break the record for most Tonys won be a performer. I think Cherry Jones (The Glass Menagerie) will win in that category.

Menzel has a good chance at another Tony.
Menzel has a good chance at another Tony.

Look for Hedwig and the Angry Inch to dominate the revival category and for Neil Patrick Harris to win. Idina Menzel wins for If/Then. Best play revival is a race between A Raisin in the Sun and The Glass Menagerie. I believe Menagerie takes it. Bryan Cranston wins for All The Way. Directing, look for John Tiffany to win for The Glass Menagerie and Darko Tresnjak for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder.

Those are my picks. We’ll see how it goes.

Enjoy the Tonys!

By the way, the Tonys will be star-studded. Others who will make appearances include Bradley Cooper, Kevin Bacon, Carole King, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Will Ferrell, Liev Schreiber, Emmy Rossum, Kate Mara, Zachary Quinto, Zachary Levi, Lucy Liu, Clint Eastwood, Patricia Clarkson, Leighton Meester, Ethan Hawke, Zach Braff, Matt Bomer, Anna Gunn, Gloria & Emilio Estefan, Tony nominee Audra McDonald, Fran Drescher, Wayne Brady, Kenneth Branagh, and Tony Goldwyn.

Wow, what a great lineup of talent!

Phantom is the record holder.
Phantom is the record holder.

The Tonys will be given out in less than a month, and although winning a Tony or two does not guarantee a long run for a musical, it certainly doesn’t help. Of the top ten longest running shows on Broadway, four are currently going strong. However, only three won Tonys. Here’s a quick glimpse at these long run musicals.

Longest Running Show

The longest running show in the history of Broadway is The Phantom of the Opera. It is closing in on 11,000 performances, and has been on the boards since January 1988. It opened on January 26th, and it is currently the Majestic Theatre. It won 7 Tony Awards in 1988, including Best Musical and an equal number of Drama Desk Awards in 1988.

Longest Running American Musical

Chicago holds the American record for long runs.
Chicago holds the American record for long runs.

The revival of Chicago by Kander and Ebb is the longest running musical created by American writers. It opened November 14, 1996. Chicago is currently running at the Ambassador Theatre. In 1997, the revival won 6 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, and a half-dozen Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Revival of a Musical. It also received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 1998.

By the way, the original production opened in 1975 and ran for 936 performances. Along with being the longest running American musical, Chicago is also the longest-running revival in Broadway history and the longest running show to have premiered on Broadway. That a lot of long run credits! It has given over 7,200 performances. It is third all-time on the long run list, far behind Phantom and a few hundred performances behind Cats.

Longest Running Musical Based on a Film

The Lion King is still mesmerizing.
The Lion King is still mesmerizing.

The Lion King opened on November 13, 1997 and it won 6 Tony Awards in 1998, including Best Musical, and 8 Drama Desk Awards in 1998. It also took the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 1999. Although there have been many musicals based on movies, there’s never been one quite like Disney’s The Lion King, which was directed by Julie Taymor. It is currently running at the Minskoff Theatre. It has offered over 6,800 Broadway performances and is fourth on the list.

Longest Running Jukebox Musical

It's the magic of ABBA.
It’s the magic of ABBA.

It opened October 18, 2001, and is presently ninth on the long run list with more than 5,200 performances. The show is Mamma Mia! With a score and lyrics by ABBA, it is the longest running jukebox musical. Still, this show did not win one Tony in 2002. But the ABBA junkies gave it life, and it continues on it’s merry way on the Great White Way.

Will Tony Help Create Another Long Run?

The question is will one musical reap a bunch of awards, and if that does happen, will that musical go on a long run? The fact is you never know. There are musicals that have won more Tonys than those above, and, although they had long runs, they never broke any records. And then there’s Mamma Mia! with not one Tony to it’s name but a whole lot of box office.

After Midnight has 7 noms!

The show, which is scheduled to preview on Broadway on May 29, will feature an original story about the dreams and struggles of those living in the inner city, and will offer a score based on Tupac Shakur’s lyrics and music.

Shakur’s music inspires.

Holler If Ya hear Me is a non-biographical musical that focuses on family, friendship, revenge, change, and hope. The story is about the inner city lives of those who are struggling for peace while living in a combustible society. Tupac Shakur’s music creates an authenticity through its urban poetry and rhythms, and, along with the book, gives us insights into what is often a harsh, uncompromising reality. The musical focuses on a young man, Gideon Fletcher, who decided to leave his sleepy shipbuilding town of Wallsend and tour the world. When he returns 14 years later he discovers that he has given up a lot of what he was and he attempts to reclaim it.

Understanding that there’s a much more important adventure to be lived in Wallsend, Gideon finds the shipbuilding town that he loves in distress over the closing of the shipyard. He also discovers that the young girl he loved is now engaged. There’s a fight on in the town, one that is about the pride and livelihood of the hardworking men. In the town, the men of the shipbuilding company erect a great monument, a towering and emblematic representation of the great vessels they have created and Gideon finds the home he had lost.

It’s a musical devoted to examining what was an amazingly tragic life led by a brilliantly talented performer.

McDonald a Force on Stage

Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, which is by Lanie Robertson, takes place in a seedy Philadelphia bar in 1959. That is the year that Holliday, who was a longtime drug addict and alcoholic, died. Holliday, who rose to prominence in the late 1930s and became a major star in the 1940s, had a traumatic life, during which she was raped in her preteen years and was prostituting in Harlem at the age of 14. Holliday was married numerous times and often found herself in abusive relationships. But her talent propelled her to a career that included a sold out concert at the prestigious Carnegie Hall.

In Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, Holliday sings a range of hits, as she revisits the tragedies, triumphs, and loves in her life. The show is moving, revelatory, and insightful.

There are some interesting and exciting new musicals coming to Broadway this season, including two that feature totally original stories: Hedwig and the Angry Inch and If/Then. Both will open this spring. Hedwig had a very successful Off-Broadway run in 1998, while If/Then is an untested piece that comes from the writers of the hit musical Next to Normal.

Both shows will premiere prior to the Tony deadline, and both may certainly be contenders. The Broadway premiere of the musical Hedwig is much anticipated by its large cult following, while If/Then may prove to be the perfect fable for those who are looking for a story focusing on a middle-aged woman who starts anew in New York City.

Comic, biting, enigmatic, and unique, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which won the Village Voice Obie Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, ran for more than two years in NYC, and since that time has been produced around the word.

The musical previews March 28, 2014, and opens April 22. It is a story that will take you on an amazing revelatory journey. If you’re looking for an offbeat musical with comedy that is sometimes witty, sometimes base, and always right on target, then Hedwig is your group ticket.

Broadway Group Tickets Rocky, the Musical
Rocky, The Musical is in previews.

Here’s what is in previews and about to open on Broadway. Broadway group sales are focused this week on some very big musicals. Of course, each show is hoping to be noticed by the Tonys and stay on Broadway for years to come. With spring just around the corner, Broadway group ticket buyers are looking for the next hit musical.

Rocky, The Musical

Rocky, The Musical, which is based on the Sylvester Stallone Oscar-winning movie, is currently in previews on Broadway. Hot off a successful run in Germany, where the musical had its world premiere, this is a massive show that features a magnificent and enthralling fight scene.

Rocky is the story of an aging boxer who gets his chance at the big fight when Apollo Creed, the champion, challenges him. Although it’s a publicity stunt and in many ways Rocky becomes a subject of ridicule, the challenger, a boxer with a heart of gold, is determined to prove himself by going the limit with Creed. The fight ends in a draw, which means Rocky has proven himself and Creed keeps the title. Of course, Rocky gets the girl, Adrian, in the end. It is a feel good musical in everyway.

Included is a new score with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. The book is by Thomas Meehan. By the way, the popular theme songs from the movie are also included. Rumors have the big production in Germany cost more than $20 million. The show opens at the Winter Garden on March 13, 2014. Contact us for group ticket sales to this new musical.

Disney’s Aladdin

Aladdin the musical B
Aladdin is a magic carpet journey.

The hit animated movie looks to be a hit musical as Aladdin and his flying carpet take up residence at the New Amsterdam Theatre in late February when it previews. The show, which has been worked and reworked while on the road, will open on March 28, 2014.

Featuring grand special effects, romance and adventure, and a whole lot of comedy, Aladdin is a great show for family and school groups. The tale of the young man who discovers a magical lantern and a genie who is rather outrageous, comical and magical, is one that is thoroughly entertaining.

Aladdin includes music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book by Chad Beguelin. It’s a high-energy, pull-out-all-stops musical that looks to be a big time winner.

In our next blog, we’ll look at two more new musicals that will open this spring and a major revival of one of Broadway’s most loved shows.

Sting's musical comes from his roots.
Sting’s musical comes from his roots.

Get your Broadway group tickets for the new Sting, John Logan, and Brian Yorkey musical The Last Ship, which will begin performances in September 2014 at the Neil Simon Theatre. This looks to be a big event, as Sting makes his Broadway debut as a composer/lyricist and Tony-winner Logan (Red) and Pulitzer Prize-winner Yorkey (Next to Normal) pen the book. Joe Mantello (“Wicked!”) will direct and Steven Hoggett will choreograph.

Based on Sting’s Childhood

The Last Ship is based on Sting’s boyhood experiences in his hometown of Wallsend, a seafaring community that is tiny, tidy, and close, which is located in northeast England. He’s taken his youthful remembrances and made them into a mythic fable.

The Last Ship tells the tale of a young man, Gideon Fletcher, who leaves his hometown of Wallsend, which builds grand ships bound for the ocean, and his sweetheart to find a new life of adventure. When he returns 14 years later, he finds that the shipyard is to be closed down and the woman he loves is engaged to another. As the town fights to take the future into their own hands, building a magnificent monument to their prowess as shipbuilders, Gideon realizes how much he has lost in the years that he sought other horizons.

Cast Announced

The cast includes Jim Nail. Nail, who happens to have also grown up in Wallsend and is known in England as a singer-songwriter-actor. Nail is especially popular actor on TV. Also in the cast will be Michael Esper (Broadway credits include Green Day’s American Idiot); Rachel Tucker (West End credits include Wicked!); Aaron Lazar (Broadway credits include Mamma Mia, Les Miserables, and The Light in the Piazza); Sally Ann Triplett (London stage credits include many musicals; Broadway debut in the musical “Carrie”); Collin Kelly-Sordelet (Broadway debut); and Fred Applegate (who appeared in numerous Broadway musicals).

Perspective from the Producer

Wallsend shipyard.

Recently The Last Ship producer Jeffrey Seller offered his perspective on the show, noting in the NY Daily News, “People ask if it’s autobiographical. The only real answer is I think it’s emotionally autobiographical but it’s not autobiographical. There’s no rock singer in ‘The Last Ship.’ But I certainly think that Sting is inspired by his youth and he’s working through a lot of emotions that all of us are working with as we get older.”

Seller, who is known as the producer of numerous hit shows, including Tony-winners Rent, Avenue Q, and In the Heights, also observed, “The words are there. The music is there. It’s time to get into the room and make the play.”
