The Tony Awards for the Best Musical Best Musical Revival are two of the most anticipated by audiences. Broadway group sales and interest in group discounts usually skyrocket for the musicals that win those awards. That is if the show is still running. Two of the four musicals nominated for Best Musical are still running and three of the four musicals that earned Tony nods for Best Revival are still on the boards. Here’s a look at each category and each show.

Best Musical

Audiences loved Bring It On.
Audiences loved Bring It On.

Broadway group sales were hot for the two musicals that saw limited Broadway runs and earned Tony nominations. Bring It On, the cheerleader competition musical based on the movie, came in to NYC after a successful tour and was a smash hit. Scheduled for a limited run, Bring It On offered high energy performances, precision choreographed cheers and production numbers and a great cast of characters.

The other musical that was scheduled for a limited run and garnered a lot of interest from critics, the Tonys and Broadway group ticket buyers was Christmas Story The Musical. The musical ran for the holiday and like the movie it is based on proved to be hugely popular especially with families. The characters, humor and spirit captured audiences and having a new quality holiday offering on Broadway was appreciated.

Kinky Boots Broadway Group sales and discounts
Billy Porter and Stark Sands are both nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.

The two musicals that got the Tony nod and are still running strong and have strong Broadway group ticket sales are Kinky Boots and Matilda The Musical. Although these two shows are quite different, they do share themes connected with being different, bullying and acceptance. Kinky Boots, which is based on the Indy film, offers audiences drama, cross dressing and a solid book, score and lyrics. There’s a high heel fashion motif and a wonderful, uplifting story. Billy Porter and Stark Sands are both nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.

Matilda The Musical, which is a major hit in the U.K., also uplifts audiences. Based on the popular book by Roald Dahl, Matilda The Musical features four young actresses alternating in the lead role (each of whom will win a special Tony this year), illusions and stage craft that is amazing and a group of characters that thoroughly entertain. Bertie Carvel, who makes his Broadway debut as Miss Trunchbull, is brilliant. The Olivier winner has a great shot at the Tony.

Best Musical Revival Broadway

Broadway groups sales and discounts Cinderella Rodgers and Hammerstein
Cinderella on Broadway is breathtaking.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Annie and Pippin are tops with those looking for Broadway group discount tickets. The three revivals caught the Tony nominating committee’s interest as did the Roundabout Theatre’s rollicking romp of a production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Drood, which has closed, was a big Tony winner when it premiered in 1985 winning for Best Book, Score and Musical.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella has a lot going for it including Tony nominated Laura Osnes (Cinderella) and Santonio Fontana (The Prince). This is a big, breathtaking production with a revised and very clever book by Douglas Carter Beane. Despite the fact that the show is considered to be a revival, Beane’s new book got a Tony nomination.

Patina Miller is nominated for her portrayal of the Leading Player in Pippin.

Pippin is back for its first Broadway revival after its long run 40 years ago and the circus motif, direction by Diane Paulus, circus creation by Gypsy Snider and wining cast lead by Patina Miller (Tony Nominated: Leading Player) make for a great evening of theatre. The reimagining of the show by Paulus and the execution of the concept is first-rate.

Finally, Annie, which in 1977 won seven Tonys including Best Book, Score and Musical, is up for the Best Musical Revival Tony. The musical is very popular with cross-generational Broadway group ticket buyers and a great experience for families to share.
