Block, Andrew Rannells, and Two-Time Tony award winner, Christian Borle.

The original 1992 cast of Falsettos!

Falsettos originally opened in 1992 with book by James Lapine and music and lyrics by William Finn. Set in 1979, it concerns a dysfunctional family. The father, Marvin, has left his wife and son to be with Whizzer, his male lover. The family members attend sessions with a psychiatrist, Mendel, to work through the transition. The musical deals with falling in love, falling out of love, religion, what it means to be a man, what it means to be a homemaker, and the Aids epidemic during the 1980s. Its words are hilarious, meaningful, and transcendent. It will be an important addition to this season’s programming.

The original production starred Michael Rupert, Stephen Bogardus, Barbara Walsh, and Chip Zien. It was nominated for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Performance of a Lead Actor, Best Performance of Featured Actor/Actress, and Best Direction. It won for best book and musical score but did not end up winning best musical. It lost to Crazy for You.
