"Once Broadway group discounts"
Once has 11 nominations, which is the most of any show.

The Tonys are going to be awarded tonight in recognition of Broadway’s best and All Tickets Inc. is excited to see what shows, performers and others will win. I’ve got some picks to share. Remember, that these are just one person’s opinion. I hope your favorites win!

The Nominees & Picks

The nominees are world class. Here they are in 12 categories.

Best Play

Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris
Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz
Peter and the Starcatcher by Rick Elice
Venus in Fur by David Ives

This is a tough one, but I’m going with Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz. I feel it has a little more going for it in terms of emotion and heightened experience.

Best Musical

Leap of Faith
Newsies
Nice Work If You Can Get It
Once

I am going with Once. It has 11 nominations and I think it takes this category.

Best Book of a Musical

Lysistrata Jones by Douglas Carter Beane
Newsies by Harvey Fierstein
Nice Work If You Can Get It by Joe DiPietro
Once by Enda Walsh

Porgy and Bess has numerous nominations.

For me it’s between Once and Nice Work If You Can Get It. Toss the coin and it lands for Once.

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre

Bonnie & Clyde with Music by Frank Wildhorn & Lyrics by Don Black
Newsies with Music by Alan Menken and Lyrics by Jack Feldman
One Man, Two Guvnors with Music & Lyrics by Grant Olding
Peter and the Starcatcher with Music by Wayne Barker & Lyrics by Rick Elice

Two musicals and two plays are nominated. I think this goes to Newsies.

Best Revival of a Play

Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman
Gore Vidal’s The Best Man
Master Class
Wit

"The Best Man group discounts"
The revival of The Best Man has captured numerous nominations

Here is an impossible category. If Death of a Salesman wins, it will be the fourth time it wins as Best Play/Revival. I’m saying Gore Vidal’s The Best Man.

Best Revival of a Musical

Evita
Follies
The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess
Jesus Christ Superstar

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is the best.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play

James Corden in One Man, Two Guvnors
Philip Seymour Hoffman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman
James Earl Jones in Gore Vidal’s The Best Man
Frank Langella in Man and Boy
John Lithgow in The Columnist

This is an impossible category with amazing performances. Take Philip Seymour Hoffman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play

Venus in Fur has captured people’s attention

Nina Arianda in Venus in Fur
Tracie Bennett in End of the Rainbow
Stockard Channing in Other Desert Cities
Linda Lavin in The Lyons
Cynthia Nixon in Wit

This is yet another extremely difficult decision. Stockard Channing in Other Desert Cities is my pick.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical

Danny Burstein in Follies
Jeremy Jordan in Newsies
Steve Kazee in Once
Norm Lewis in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess
Ron Raines in Follies

I’m betting on Norm Lewis in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical

Jan Maxwell in Follies
Audra McDonald in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess
Cristin Milioti in Once
Kelli O’Hara in Nice Work If You Can Get It
Laura Osnes in Bonnie & Clyde

I think Audra McDonald in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess does it again.

Best Direction of a Play

Great direction defines Peter and the Starcatcher

Nicholas Hytner for One Man, Two Guvnors
Pam MacKinnon for Clybourne Park
Mike Nichols for Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman
Roger Rees and Alex Timbers for Peter and the Starcatcher

Give Roger Rees and Alex Timbers for Peter and the Starcatcher their due.

Best Direction of a Musical

Jeff Calhoun for Newsies
Kathleen Marshall for Nice Work If You Can Get It
Diane Paulus for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess
John Tiffany for Once

John Tiffany for Once will get the award.
